Cemetery plots at the Macedonia Baptist Church have eroding land exposing numerous headstones and tombs. Many generations of Pughsville natives are buried on land that is quickly eroding into a ravine connected to the Nansemond River behind the cemetery.
Newly developed and large-scale housing complexes and the expansion of a developing city have caused issues for the original residents of the neighborhoods, whose family members have lived there for generations. Septic issues, stormwater runoff, overflowing ditches and flooding, shoreline erosion, and water accessibility are just some of the issues worsened by the new developments surrounding this historically African-American neighborhood. Interested in local history, Paul Horne has mostly lived in and around Ipswich having worked for BT and SCC. He has been taking photos of the town with the array of changes across the place for over twenty years. The titles of the images are his, unedited and are mostly self-explanatory.
The Society is most pleased to have acquired these images for wider viewing and research.
