Fall foliage (New Rochelle, New York)--October 17, 2009.
Over the past week, the seasonal journey through autumn was noteworthy. The week began with the season's most widespread and severe frost to date. On Monday morning, fallen leaves, blades of grass, and other low-lying plants were covered with the crystalline edifices of ice that rose a few millimeters above the surface.
Thursday saw the calendar seemingly advanced a month ahead of schedule. Snowflakes fell across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. In some areas, the snow was sufficient to whiten the ground. Hills and mountains were decked in their wintry attire for the first time. Some snow flakes even penetrated New York City's nearby suburbs.
Aside from those events, with each passing day, fall's magnificent foliage continued to advance farther to the south and east. The red pictured above is the color of passion. It is a reminder that even as the landscape will eventually grow barren, one should never lose one's passion for life. Even on the harshest days of winter, beauty will be found wherever it is sought.
For now, another nor'easter is bringing gusty winds, abnormally high tides, and a cold rain. Autumn is continuing to progress.
Visiting some friends upstate, I just had to get a shot of this apartment complex. Really liked all the lines and textures The light kind of sucked that day for the building so I opted for a high contrast effect in post processing.

New Rochelle FD operated this 1982 Sutphen that was refurbished in 1998. It was originally assigned to Tower Ladder 11, and replaced in 2000 by a Spartan Gladiator/LTI 93'. It was assigned as a spare with the Ladder 14 identifier when this photo was taken in 2003, with Station 2 in the background. The final disposition is unknown to me.
