Early morning at Verdi, Nevada finds a 70M leading fresh tracks eastbound. First good full day of photography in a while after a frustrating beginning to 2016.
Jeff and I were exploring dark skies over northern Nevada a few weeks ago. I have 476 shots of the milky way moving across the night sky over this little pond. Hopefully I can put them together with a little music in the future.
At first the clouds obscured the night sky then start to open up. The wind sometimes blurred the reflection. Sometimes Jupiter twinkled in the reflection.
It was a hot night with mosquitoes feasting on us while we slept in the back of the car...like we always do because I don't like tents. But I love being outdoors and exploring the back roads. Looking forward to heading back out in a few weeks.

Barren and empty. Stark and immense. I'm haunted by this land of dirt, mineral, and rock.

Looking SSW across lowest Harriet Lake 9911. On the horizon is blocky, reddish Isberg Peak at center left, and the string of the Clark Range peaks at center. California, Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite, Harriet Lakes. Off the John Muir Trail near Mile 026.
I grew up here from 4 to 13 years old. My parents were part of a commune that relocated to the desert from the California Coast, for multiple and complicated reasons. Most of my first memories were of this land, including this truck stop that we had fixed up and run.
We just called it Oasis, like the exit it was located at. In a sense, it was an oasis in the desert for the folks who would have driven by on I-80. I wonder what some of them must have thought about all those earnest, mainly happy young hippies.
This is the view from the foothills of the Pequop Mountains, the next range to the West of Oasis, which is visible as the cluster of trees and a building or two. The Silver Zone Mountains are in the background of the photo. I-80 is the road that you can see stretch between the two mountain ranges.
The next time you might be driving past here, now you have a story about a kid from the area :)

MAGICAL!!
You can barely make it out but on the bottom left is magician Lance Burton's mansion. 10-minutes before the fireworks there was some great lightning strikes to the left of where fireworks was being shot from. So I aimed my camera up high because that's where most of the lightning was. This was the only strike that I caught before the show but it appeared much lower than the previous lightnings.
Seen out in parts east of here.

Journal Building, 1133 6th Street, Nevada, Iowa. The Nevada Journal Building was constructed by George and Oscar Benjamin, editors and publishers of the Nevada Journal, in 1905 to house the offices of their local newspaper. It is now the home of R.H. Investments.
Built in 1906, the Nevada Northern connected the enormous pit mines at Ruth with the smelter on the old McGill Ranch, and then with the main line at Cobre for an overall run of not quite 150 miles. After considerable repair and restoration, the Nevada Northern began carrying passengers again in 1986.
