Winners of Knowsley’s annual creative writing competition were unveiled at a special ceremony in the Huyton Suite.

This year’s theme was ‘storytelling’, and attracted entries including bedtime stories and modern nursery rhymes from Knowsley library members all over the borough and beyond.

Seven-year-old Jade Thorold from Huyton won the Under 16s prize for her story ‘The Dirty Dinosaur’ – a creature who loves playing in mud.

Winner in the adult section was Maureen Reason from Netherley, with her poignant story ‘The Vigil’. All stories can be read on Knowsley Council’s website.

The winners were presented with their prizes by local poet Curtis Watt.

Cllr Graham Wright, Cabinet Member for Children and Family Services, said: “Once again the people of Knowsley have demonstrated their great love for books on World Book Day.

“As in previous years, I have been impressed by the number of people inspired to write their own stories and enter our Creative Writing Competition, for which we always have very many high quality entries.

“Well done to everyone who took part and I hope people will be spurred on to read even more in the coming year.”

This photo is out of sequence unfortunately as it failed to upload earlier.

4128 (CX06EBL), the penultimate member of the batch, rests on Wood Lane, Netherley. This is the terminating point for the 79 route and, unlike Liverpool Airport and Speke Morrison's, the 86 and 82 end points, was a major disappointment. An undistinguished location with no proper layover area. Picture taken on 10/10/11.

The plaque at the entrance reads:

"Hillsborough Oaks

96 Oak trees were planted in this wood 1996 in memory of those who lost their lives in the Hillsborough stadium tragedy of 15 April 1989."

(The woods are on the Netherley Road Liverpool). This is a very peaceful area so take a book or just sit and listen to the birds

2413 is allocated to Arriva Merseysides Speke depot. It is seen here in Paradise Street Interchange just after arriving on service 79 from Netherley.

Picton Road forms part of a major bus route into the city from Runcorn and Netherley; hence the presence of a bus lane.

Housing to the left must have been rather desirable when originally built; the dormer windows most certainly add alot to the scene.

A rear view of 4127 (CX06EBK) as it lays over on Mann Island near Liverpool's waterfront. It is also working the 79 route to Netherley. Photo taken on 27/10/11.

This is the Woolton Road from Woolton to Garston. The nineteen thirties saw John Brodie (the man who invented football nets) the City Engineer, preside over the building of Queens Drive and the East Lancs Road. It also saw the development of the dual carriageways through Allerton. Pevsner calls this one of the most beautiful dual carriageways in the country. It depends what you include in the definition of dual carriageways but I know what he means. The west and eastbound go their own way with differing gradients and retaining walls - all smothered in now mature trees. In Woolton you can trace what has always looked like the nascent sweep of a proposed King's Drive ring road, further out than Queens. It would have linked up with this road but near Netherley it peters out - Huyton with Roby Urban Council were presumably not interested.
