Shiermonnikoog dunes - Netherlands

The Dutch are now starting to see their famous spring flowers poke through the winter soil, but a few weeks ago it was a different story as a cold snap took grip.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image from 2 March 2018 shows Amsterdam and the IJmeer and Markemeer freshwater lakes covered by a thin layer of ice. As famous as the Netherlands is for flowers, it’s arguably equally renowned for ice skating. While the cold snap caused havoc throughout much of Europe, the Dutch were busy dusting off their skates and eager to hit the ice. The ice on these big lakes was much too thin to skate on, but some canals in Amsterdam were closed to boats to give the ice a chance to thicken and skaters took what is now a relatively rare opportunity to enjoy a national pastime.

A possible consequence of climate change, the Netherlands doesn’t see the ice that it used to. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute rates winters using an index: those scoring above 100 are considered cold. Between 1901 and 1980, there were seven winters above 200 – very cold. The last time the index exceeded the magical 100 mark was in 1997. In fact, this was also the last time the weather was cold enough for an ‘Elfstedentocht’: a 200 km skating race between 11 towns in the north of the country. In 2014, for the first time since measurements began, the index fell to zero.

While people enjoyed the ice below, this Sentinel-2 image, which is also featured on the Earth from Space video programme, allows us to view the beauty of this short-lived layer of ice from above.

Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands with a population of 872,680[12] within the city proper, 1,380,872 in the urban area and 2,410,960 in the metropolitan area. Found within the province of North Holland, Amsterdam is colloquially referred to as the "Venice of the North", attributed by the large number of canals which form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin around a dam in the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world in the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century and became the leading centre for finance and trade. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19–20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Sloten, annexed in 1921 by the municipality of Amsterdam, is the oldest part of the city, dating to the 9th century.

As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha-world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, including Philips, AkzoNobel, TomTom and ING. Also, many of the world's largest companies are based in Amsterdam or have established their European headquarters in the city, such as leading technology companies Uber, Netflix and Tesla. In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city to live in by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and 12th globally on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer. The city was ranked 4th place globally as top tech hub in the Savills Tech Cities 2019 report (2nd in Europe), and 3rd in innovation by Australian innovation agency 2thinknow in their Innovation Cities Index 2009. The Port of Amsterdam is the fifth largest in Europe. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the busiest airport in the Netherlands, and the third busiest in Europe. Famous Amsterdam residents include the diarist Anne Frank, artists Rembrandt and Van Gogh, and philosopher Baruch Spinoza.

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in the world. Amsterdam's main attractions include its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, the Concertgebouw, the Anne Frank House, the Scheepvaartmuseum, the Amsterdam Museum, the Heineken Experience, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, Natura Artis Magistra and Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. They draw more than 5 million international visitors annually. The city is also well known for its nightlife and festival activity; several of its nightclubs (Melkweg, Paradiso) are among the world's most famous. It is also one of the world's most multicultural cities, with at least 177 nationalities represented

Good Morning from Delft. Delft, a stunning little city where we enjoyed pancakes and hot chocolate in the warm October sunshine.

This one is taken from the dizzyingly high church tower at one end of the lovely market square. The impressive building opposite is the Town Hall. Below are my family, finishing up their pancakes while I climbed the tower.

The Netherlands is famous for growing and exporting tulips and other flowers. The Keukenhof is a park visited by 1,5 million people every year.

One of the light sculptures I have never seen before and is completely new to me during this 10th edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light art festival in Amsterdam. Artists, architects and (light) designers from all over the world bring their light artworks and installations alive during the festival every winter.

Edition #10 is from 2 December 2021 till 22 Jaunuary 2022. It’s the 10th anniversary of the festival. This special edition is a repeat of the most popular light artworks of the past 10 years. A few new artworks and some artworks have been placed at a different location than the original, so they can be experienced as new again.

Seven gigantic butterflies have landed on the surface of the canal. The butterflies not only rise and fall with the movement of the water caused by passing boats, but their wings glow blue against the dark night.

This is the "Brunssumerheide". A 600 hectare nature reserve which is surrounded by urban areas on three sides. It includes a large hilly heathland, forest and swamp areas. A place of peace in the middle of a concrete desert.

Another variation on a theme......

Thanks to one of my flickr contacts I know know this building is called Blaak 8 and the Architects were Group A and Dreissen Architecten. It's the headquarters for the Dutch Energy Company Stedin.

From the archello.com/project/offices-blaak-8 website : "The structure of a tree with its natural constructional logic, has been the inspiration for the facade design. At the top, where the forces are relatively small, the tree exists of thin twigs. At the bottom, where the forces from the entire crown come together and must be carried, the trunk of the tree looks broad and strong. It is this natural structure that has served as inspiration for the load-bearing facade of Blaak 8. On the lower floors heavy piers reflect the 'tree-trunks' which extend upwardly branching out into smaller piers that reflect the 'tree-tops'. The tower owes its stability to this diagonal fluttering 'branches'. The unconventional facade structure ensures the building to be experienced as abstract from various viewpoints, and from other positions the tree structure to be clearly visible."

The colourful 22 storey Calypso building by Alsop Architects and Van Der Laan Bouma Architekten BV is a short walk from Centraal Station. Even on a dull day it offers plenty of opportunites for shots like this.

From SkyscraperCenter.com : "The Calypso building is a component of the Rotterdam Central urban strategy scheme. The development of this site afforded the opportunity to establish the beginnings of a quality public realm on the Westersingel leading from the station, the desired "cultural route" of the city. The development accommodates 407 apartments, a retail area, commercial space and a church. The faceted group of towers, with the more rotund, copper-clad Pauluskerk nestling against it, is like a collection of crystalline rocks, punched into which are sheltered external spaces, which are generous enough to be used properly, and integrated into the internal planning so as to form an extension of the living spaces.

The quality of the public areas in particular have been considered, with a two-tiered circulation space below the residential buildings; the lower below the transparent pavement of the upper, and connecting directly with car parking. Consultation and workshop exercises with the community of Pauluskerk in particular, were central to the development of the design."
