A shot i have longed to do was to photograph the beach community at Nethertown with a loco hauled train passing behind, preferably on a sunny day and preferably with a large logo 37.
Throw into the mix that it has to be low tide and the sun has to be in the right position then the likelihood of achieving the objective was stacking against me. Don't even mention that i get up to Cumbria once a year.
So....with the imminent demise of loco hauled services on the Cumbrian Coast and with the clocks going back then this day was the last chance for me to achieve this shot.
Well Odin smiled on me and this is the result.

This came as a wonderful surprise as I was photographing in dull morning mist and hadn't noticed the sun creep over the top of the fell in the cloud. When it suddenly burst out it was amazing, transforming the scene. In real life it was like a touch of heaven, much more so than the camera (or my skills) could capture. For the next few minutes I was rushing round trying different compositions, as, with the sun up, the mist rapidly dispersed and the scene lost the magic.
I like this but I had to wait ages and ages for the sun to go in enough to get it without black, filled in, shadows. Usually I wait ages for the sun to come out! In hindsight it would have been better to have got this another day and to have gone straight up to the lake where there would have been plenty of contrasty light/dark cloud.
(The pink wall in the background here, just left of centre, is a newly re-built section that had a lot of reddish stone in it.)

Tasmania
This will be the last shot posted for a while I reckon- a few consecutive weekends of weddings leading up to Christmas will have has busy busy til the new year. Followed by moving out of home for renovations and gallery preparation! I've realised that among my posts, Tasmania this year seems relatively under-represented. This is one from the archives taken just outside of Binalong Bay and St Helens.

There's something about this terminus that I really like. The houses are really cool, the roads seem really quiet, and there is also very tight corners leading onto this road!

Nether Hall, near Pakenham in Suffolk, is an impressive country house set within landscaped parkland. The present red-brick mansion dates mainly from the early 17th century but was substantially remodelled in the 19th century in the Jacobean revival style, with gables, tall clustered chimneys and mullioned windows giving it a strikingly grand profile. The hall stands on the site of an earlier medieval manor associated with the de Pakenham family.
Over the centuries, Nether Hall passed through several notable owners, including the Cadogan and Hyde Parker families, each leaving their mark on the estate. The surrounding gardens blend formal terraces with lawns, topiary and specimen trees, enclosed by low walls and ha-ha boundaries that merge seamlessly into the wider parkland. The outbuildings, including the stable courtyard and coach house, retain much of their Victorian character.
Seen from above, the hall’s symmetry and brick detailing are especially clear, showing how the later extensions respected the proportions of the original structure. The estate remains one of Suffolk’s more secluded and elegant country houses, a fine example of evolving English domestic architecture set amid peaceful countryside.

Now 1A25 Edinburgh to Aberdeen has been reduced to 4 coaches in the current timetable its a relatively effortless run for the single cl 73 - still can't get used to seeing these veteran locos away from the 3rd rail though !
