California, Washington, NY take steps after net neutrality vote

The Federal Communications Commission may have voted to roll back net neutrality rules, but some state lawmakers and attorneys general say they’ll battle the feds to make sure online traffic is treated equally.

A pending issue and concern is privacy protection. Excessive government involvement could have frightening implications for our civil liberties (Straubhaar et al., 2010).

ISPs may not trust the government, as many ISPs generally disfavor government regulatory mandates, some of which may impede efficiency and reduce profits (Suarez & Guillen, 2005). Similarly, many civil liberties groups do not trust the ISPs. Unlike any other media system through the centuries, it is designed to have no gatekeepers, no centralized control points (Ross, 2010).
