THE CRYPTO ANARCHIST MANIFESTO

by

Timothy C. May

(tcmay@netcom.com)

A specter is haunting the modern world, the specter of crypto anarchy.

Computer technology is on the verge of providing the ability for individuals and groups to communicate and interact with each other in a totally anonymous manner. Two persons may exchange messages, conduct business, and negotiate electronic contracts without ever knowing the True Name, or legal identity, of the other. Interactions over networks will be untraceable, via extensive re- routing of encrypted packets and tamper-proof boxes which implement cryptographic protocols with nearly perfect assurance against any tampering. Reputations will be of central importance, far more important in dealings than even the credit ratings of today. These developments will alter completely the nature of government regulation, the ability to tax and control economic interactions, the ability to keep information secret, and will even alter the nature of trust and reputation.

The technology for this revolution--and it surely will be both a social and economic revolution--has existed in theory for the past decade. The methods are based upon public-key encryption, zero-knowledge interactive proof systems, and various software protocols for interaction, authentication, and verification. The focus has until now been on academic conferences in Europe and the U.S., conferences monitored closely by the National Security Agency. But only recently have computer networks and personal computers attained sufficient speed to make the ideas practically realizable. And the next ten years will bring enough additional speed to make the ideas economically feasible and essentially unstoppable. High-speed networks, ISDN, tamper-proof boxes, smart cards, satellites, Ku-band transmitters, multi-MIPS personal computers, and encryption chips now under development will be some of the enabling technologies.

The State will of course try to slow or halt the spread of this technology, citing national security concerns, use of the technology by drug dealers and tax evaders, and fears of societal disintegration. Many of these concerns will be valid; crypto anarchy will allow national secrets to be traded freely and will allow illicit and stolen materials to be traded. An anonymous computerized market will even make possible abhorrent markets for assassinations and extortion. Various criminal and foreign elements will be active users of CryptoNet. But this will not halt the spread of crypto anarchy.

Just as the technology of printing altered and reduced the power of medieval guilds and the social power structure, so too will cryptologic methods fundamentally alter the nature of corporations and of government interference in economic transactions. Combined with emerging information markets, crypto anarchy will create a liquid market for any and all material which can be put into words and pictures. And just as a seemingly minor invention like barbed wire made possible the fencing-off of vast ranches and farms, thus altering forever the concepts of land and property rights in the frontier West, so too will the seemingly minor discovery out of an arcane branch of mathematics come to be the wire clippers which dismantle the barbed wire around intellectual property.

Arise, you have nothing to lose but your barbed wire fences!

Sited on the summit of Mitchell Hilll above Dingwall, this beaufiful castellated tower - erected in 1907 - stands (now amid a beautiful cemetery) in silent tribute to Ross-shire's (and Scotland's) most famous sons, Major-General Sir Hector Archibald Macdonald KCB, DSO, ADC, LLD.(1853-1903), otherwise known as "fighting Mac" and "Hector the Hero".

From Rootsfield, near Dingwall this crofter's son joined the Gordon Highlanders Regiment aged 17 and went on become of the first men of humble background to rise to the highest postions in the British Army.

He was also highly thought of by HM Queen Victoria, and took command of the Highland Brigade in the Boer War after the debacle, which resulted in severe casualties, that was the Battle of Magersfontein.

His military career is well documented, as is his fall from grace (in what appears to have been a smear campaign) cullminating in him taking his own life in Paris in 1903.

Fact is, the man was a National Hero, who brought great credit on his native land, and the monument is a fititing memorial to a Great Man.

A document, which was to be opened and made public a century after his death, was NOT made public in 2003 - because "the material contained within was still too sensitive".

To commemorate his passing, the one and only J Scott Skinner composed a fiddle tune, a lament, called "Hector the Hero". It is the most evocative tune, and sounds wonderful on fiddle or bagpipes.

Grown as a small tree or large shrub, Gabriel’s trumpet produces low-hanging branches and reaches mature heights of 8 to 14 feet with an equal or slightly wider spread. Individual green, oval-shaped leaves have deep veins and toothed edges and range in length from 4 to 8 inches. Each trumpet blossom is 12 inches long and flares at its bottom into five curling petals. Gabriel's trumpet produces blooms from early summer through late fall. Depending upon the specific variety, the flowers appear in white, yellow or orange and emit a strong, spicy fragrance.

This special report to my family and the court and my friends. Thank you! The first case is, I was supposed my ex-BF (H) he is not a spy, only individual behavior to taken my photos. If MICHELLE and RORATAR didn't use my simple key to open my yahoo account, maybe after I find a man get married, I also don't know how the presence of these photos, and (H)he didn't think about to leak the photos. So I won't have so many injuries. If the account was opened after they gave me a messeage or an email to remind me for what happened, rather than five months netcom bubble, then I should appreciate them so much. The second case is, let me make assumptions about that he (H) is a spy, he must go away earlier, but he is still there. He told me that I have not spoken with him for five months. If he is really a spy and still on line for me, either he thinks I'm too stupid so I am waiting for the kills. For this instance, I think MICHELLE and RORATAR without my agreement, they should not act this time deliberate tease, and I think they should take some responsibility for me as they caused a loss. Those pictures, they do not have sexual behavior, without sex composition, they are some art photos. And H, although I am his girlfriend or ex-girlfriend, but I'm strongly opposed to his plan, he should be in first with my permission, otherwise, he can not hold those photos under my prohibitions. If he now holds these photos, he should pay me the photos of royalties, if any of my pohotos is publishing or public by him, he should pay me other fees with those impact of the relationship. There is a need for me firstly, the relationship from each other can have a further development.

I did both the art and technical direction for this piece, in addition to the project management and interactive scripting for a stand-alone kiosk, under AE's creative director. This was deployed at CES at the GN Netcom booth, on custom hardware I specified on a nice high resolution LCD. Because I know something about how computer graphics work, I was able to optimize the graphics so they worked very well on the target platform without having to burn a lot of production time. The 3D graphics were provided by GN Netcom as pre-production CAD files stripped of meta data, and were converted and rendered by the talented Duncan Hsu.

The Sierra Vista Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee hosted their annua Bring a Vet to Lunch event at the Thunder Mountain Activity Center here Nov. 6, 2019. Guest speaker Maj. Gen. Maria Barrett, commanding general of NETCOM shared how her father's military service influenced her life choices. Veterans from different generations with service in a variety of conflicts attended. Honoring military tradition, oldest veteran Jerry Coniglio, 96, with service in WWII, and youngest Soldier Pfc. Tanner Whittaker, 19, assigned to the 40th ESB, joined Barrett in cutting the cake with a saber. (U.S. Army photo by Tanja Linton)
