Point Abino Lighthouse

Keeping a proud watch over Lake Erie, the Point Abino Lighthouse is one of the greatest of its kind in Canada.

Built in 1917-1918, the lighthouse and keeper’s dwelling are a local, provincial, and federal landmark with a unique history. This light station was one of 40 built during the last period of manned lighthouse construction.

Preservations want this 'keeper's dwelling' for the historic Point Abino Lighthouse kept in public hands.

At the end of Point Abino, a large rocky shelf projects into the lake making it necessary to build the lighthouse at a considerable distance from the shoreline. In stormy weather and at high-water periods, the lighthouse was inaccessible on foot. For that reason, the keeper’s dwelling required a site on the adjoining shore.

A TREE

A tree reminds us that to grow up,

towards the spiritual, the abstract, it is necessary to be well rooted in the earth,

in the concrete, in the matter.

It is like the human being, a being that unites heaven and earth.

He is the bearer of the finished fruit, and at the same time,

It is in the process of development.

We as human beings

we are the maximum expression of creation and at the same time

we are still in the process of growth.

The eastern garter snake has a wide range across eastern North America, as far north as southern Ontario and Quebec to the Gulf of Mexico in the south, along the eastern shores of America to the Mississippi River.

The eastern garter snake will live in a variety of environments, with a preference for grassy or shrubby fields, including abandoned farmland, outbuildings and trash dumps. In particular the snake likes to inhabit stone walls that separate the forest from fields. It is also found along moist habitats such as lakes, rivers, streams, swamps, bogs, ponds, drainage ditches, and quarries. Snakes are present in urban environments in habitats that include city parks, cemeteries and suburban yards and gardens. Being cold-blooded, they like to bask in the sunlight near logs, stones and other debris where they can hide if necessary.

Eastern garter snakes mostly eat toads, frogs, slugs, and worms, but they will eat almost anything they can overpower. (Wikipedia)

The first garter snake of the year, she was probably sixty centimeters long and looking for sun, not birders. She peered out at us and then disappeared into the undergrowth.

Ticks are small, parasitic arachnids that can carry and transmit various diseases to humans and animals. Some common diseases associated with ticks include:

1. Lyme Disease: It is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted primarily by the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) in North America. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle and joint aches, and a characteristic skin rash.

2. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF): It is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii and is transmitted by the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and the Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni). Symptoms include high fever, headache, rash, and muscle aches.

3. Babesiosis: It is caused by microscopic parasites of the Babesia family and is transmitted primarily by the black-legged tick. Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and anemia.

4. Ehrlichiosis: It is caused by bacteria of the Ehrlichia family and is transmitted by the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum) and the black-legged tick. Symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches.

To avoid tick-borne diseases, consider the following preventive measures:

1. Wear protective clothing: When venturing into tick-prone areas like forests or grassy areas, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Tuck pants into socks and opt for light-colored clothing to spot ticks easily.

2. Use tick repellents: Apply an EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) or picaridin on exposed skin. Permethrin-based repellents can be used on clothing, shoes, and camping gear to repel ticks.

3. Perform regular tick checks: After spending time outdoors, thoroughly check your body for ticks. Pay close attention to areas such as the scalp, behind the ears, underarms, groin, and the back of the knees. Promptly remove any attached ticks using tweezers, grasping them as close to the skin's surface as possible.

4. Create a tick-safe environment: Keep lawns and outdoor recreational areas well-maintained. Clear leaf litter, tall grasses, and brush around your home to minimize tick habitats. Consider using tick control products or seek professional pest control services if necessary.

5. Check pets and gear: Pets can carry ticks indoors, so ensure regular tick checks and appropriate tick prevention measures for your pets. Examine camping gear, backpacks, and other outdoor equipment for ticks before bringing them indoors.

Remember, early detection and proper removal of ticks can reduce the risk of contracting tick-borne diseases. If you develop symptoms after a tick bite, seek medical attention promptly and inform your healthcare provider about the exposure to ticks.

The hair of the Hare is tawny more or less brown and red with black hairs and even yellowish especially in summer, but its belly is creamy white. His hairs are white. A moult is done in the fall and at the end of the winter, before the summer.

He wears long ears (9 to 13 cm) at the end of which is outlined a vaguely black spot in the shape of a triangle. When he eats, he folds them on his back. Its small tail (6 to 13 cm) is black but white on the underside. Its hind legs have a length and power that allows it, when deployed, to jump strongly (up to 2 m high, 3 m long) and move at an impressive speed (until 80km / h). Moreover, the hare is also a swimmer, he can cross a river if necessary.

Its large size is one of its characteristics: between 50 and 70 cm long for a weight that can reach 7 kg. The absence of sexual dimorphism makes it difficult to distinguish females known as hases, males, from periods of rut during which behaviors differ.

In addition to her 28-tooth dentition, her sense of smell and hearing are excellent, which compensates for her ocular myopia despite eyes that offer 360 ° vision. The hare shrieks only in case of mortal danger, otherwise it is silent, as well as solitary. He can live a good ten years or twelve years in the wild, where he lives in a sedentary and wild (the hare does not tame).

Sometimes it is necessary to stop for a moment and enjoy the warmth of your home with your love ❤️

Dear Fumihide san,

I saw your flickr post and I am so happy to hear that your temperature is down to normal! I am also glad that you are taking it seriously as it is still a very real risk everywhere. It’s strange that it’s even the people who have taken all the necessary precautions that are getting sick now but I guess the one improvement is that in most current cases the symptoms are much milder. I wonder if there will ever be a return to “normal” or perhaps this already is the new normal!

Best wishes to you and family,

Brian

the familiar Robin is not very shy and its attractive plumage has made it popular with generations of gardeners; in fact the robin is part of a very aggressive bird species, and some males sometimes fight to death to defend their territory. Present in almost every garden, it is one of the least wild birds, seeking its food near the humans in the process of gardening. It will go as far as feeding on live prey, such as earthworms or mealworms, presented by hand. If the winter is rough, it will become even more familiar, as the lack of food caused by snow and ice makes it very vulnerable.

The robin defends a territory all year long, except during the moult and if the winter is very cold. In winter, females also occupy and defend a territory. It is necessary for them not only to nest, but also to guarantee a sufficient source of food. A robin without territory dies after a few weeks. That's why this space is defended with such energy. In general, it is enough for the owner to show his red shirt so that the intruder recoils, but it can happen that the struggle begins and the fighting sometimes ends with the death of one of the opponents.

In contrast to many other birds, the robin lives alone during the fall and winter male and female remaining in their respective winter territories with the result that they continue to sing even in winter.

The robin seems to see well in the dark because it is still active at night when there is no light.

Museum of Arts and Popular Customs of Seville

The Museum of Arts and Popular Customs of Seville (Spanish: Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares) is a museum in Seville, Andalusia, Spain, located in the María Luisa Park, across the Plaza de América from the Provincial Archeological Museum.

The museum occupies the Mudéjar Pavilion (Pabellón Mudéjar) designed by Aníbal González and built in 1914. It served as an art pavilion, the Pabellón de Arte Antiguo, for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, when Aníbal González had the opportunity to design several additional permanent buildings for the plaza. The exterior is ceramic over brick, and has three doors with archivolts adorned with glazed tiles (azulejos).[citation needed]

The building originally consisted of two stories over an aeration chamber (necessary because of the humidity). In the 1960s, the main floor, originally over 12 metres (39 ft) high, was divided in two, with an intermediate level added by architect Delgado Roig. In 1972, as part of the preparations for the current museum, the various stories of the building were connected by a grand spiral staircase designed by José Galnares Sagastizábal.

The museum was established by a decree of 23 March 1972, initially as a section of the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville. It opened its doors to the public 4 March 1973.[2] For the next seven years, the museum fell under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and Science, but the city government occupied more than half of the poorly maintained building. Neither institution took full responsibility. This situation led to a series of temporary closures. In 1976, the electric bill could not be paid, and the museum had to be shut until it could get power again. In 1979, heavy rains damaged the interior.

...

As the river of water meandered through the forest, we too meandered with it, but sticking close to the well worn path. With each step, we kept moving lower into the forest realizing that at some point it would be necessary to climb back up. Fortunately, the many wonders of nature prevented us from moving too quickly.

The undulating floor and various bare roots, made one look were one was walking. A vividly green fern helps too anchor this shot, while thriving in a crevasse among the moss covered rocks. And, the cloud covered sky helped even out the light, preventing any harsh shadows.

As is often the case, the two bright stars in the frame are nowhere near the galaxies (distance wise) and are performing a cosmic photobomb in the foreground.

An interesting fact about this specific cluster is that from a gravitational standpoint, it shouldn't exist. Roughly 83% of the matter necessary to explain the gravitational interactions just isn't there. This is the infamous "dark matter" you might have heard of (which in essence is just a collection name to indicate that we don't really know what's going on). Time will hopefully tell/reveal.

Autumn is in the air, in the trees, and on my mind. And like others, in their cameras by now. Trout Lake is only about 20 minutes away and unveils itself in different ways depending on the season. With the sun now lower in the sky, and winds barely present, the mirror-like surface can provide terrific reflections.

Fall colors also present themselves for view, while Lillie Pads suddenly appear. The shadow that split the scene nicely framed the two distinctly different elements. This too created depth and a polarizing filter both removed glare, and released those vivid colors.

In order to get this shot, it was necessary to prop up against a Birch tree that was leaning about 45 degrees toward the lake. There was nowhere to place my tripod and achieve the same shot, short of submersing it and settling for something different. For me, that is just not an option; be nice to your equipment.

[EN] On the rainy Saturday evening the 25th of March this year, I was able to photograph the S-Bahn 470 128 of the "Historische S-Bahn Hamburg e.V.". The S-Bahn, painted in the typical "blau/beige livery", is seen at the S-Bahn station of Blankenese awaiting its departure towards the city of Hamburg. Because of necessary maintenance, this train set will go out of service for a certain period by the end of this year.

Mullaghcleevaun { 853m } is a wild and isolated place accessed from the famous Military Road, R115. Its necessary to climb two other mountains, namely, Carrickshouk { 573m } and Stony Hill { 709m } in order to get there. Its a 10 mile round trip across wild blanket bog with lots of pools and hidden sink holes that your feet suddenly disappear into up to your knees. You can see why the Irish army often train up there. They always look at little old me very peculiarly when I meet them and ask me do I need help! Cheek! Id give them a run for their money anyday!!! Lol! Its looking very brown here but it does green up with moor grass, heather, bracken and bilberry in May and lots of alpines grow there as well. As this was late March theres still a hint of snow on the mountain which I like. Its quite beautiful really and I love the starkness of the big granite boulders against the brown. Ive climbed it a good few times now. I have turned back on occassion when the weather suddenly changed as it can be dangerous as its never worth the risk to yourself or others who have to rescue you.

Its funny, but there is a great sense of achievement for me personally, when I climb it and it does make you realise how small you are in the great scale of things so worrying about life isnt going to help in the least up here and these places will still be here when we are long gone! A great leveller!

Hope you like the photo and the bit of info and do keep close.

Best wishes to all of you my good friends.

Champion

By Carrie Underwood

Song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Htu3va7yDMg

[Carrie Underwood:]

I'll be the last one standin'

Two hands in the air, I'm a champion

You'll be looking up at me when it's over

I live for the battle, I'm a soldier, yeah

I'm a fighter like Rocky

Put you flat on your back like Ali

Yeah, I'm the greatest, I'm stronger

Paid my dues, can't lose, I'ma own ya, ay

I've been working my whole life

And now, it's do or die

I am invincible, unbreakable

Unstoppable, unshakable

They knock me down, I get up again

I am the champion, you're gon' know my name

You can't hurt me now, I can't feel the pain

I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win

I am the champion

When they write my story

They're gonna say that I did it for the glory

But don't think that I did it for the fame, yeah

I did it for the love of the game, yeah

And this is my chance, I'm takin'

All them old records, I'm breakin'

All you people watchin' on the TV

You go ahead and put your bets on me, ay

I've been waitin' my whole life

To see my name in lights

I am invincible, unbreakable

Unstoppable, unshakable

They knock me down, I get up again

I am the champion, you're gon' know my name

You can't hurt me now, I can't feel the pain

I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win

I am the champion, ooh

[Bridge: Ludacris:]

Born champion, Luda!

The C is for the courage I possess through the trauma (Yeah)

H is for the hurt, but it's all for the honor

A is for my attitude, working through the patience (Hey)

Money comes and goes, so the M is for motivation

Gotta stay consistent, the P is to persevere

The I is for integrity, innovative career (Career)

The O is optimistic, open and never shut

And the N is necessary 'cause I'm never givin' up

See, they ask me how I did it, I just did it from the heart

Crushin' the competition, been doin' it from the start

They say that every champion is all about his principles

Carrie!

[Carrie Underwood:]

I am invincible, unbreakable

Unstoppable, unshakable

They knock me down, I get up again

I am the champion, you're gon' know my name

You can't hurt me now, I can't feel the pain

I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win

I am the champion

[Ludacris & Carrie Underwood:]

I'm the champion, yeah, surpassed all rivals

It's all about who wants it the most

I am the champion, oh

Fight for what we believe in

That's what champions are made of

I am the champion (Yeah, champion)

Eurasian blue tits, usually resident and non-migratory birds, are widespread and a common resident breeder throughout temperate and subarctic Europe and the western Palearctic in deciduous or mixed woodlands with a high proportion of oak. They usually nest in tree holes, although they easily adapt to nest boxes where necessary. Their main rival for nests and in the search for food is the larger and more common great tit.

The Eurasian blue tit prefers insects and spiders for its diet. Outside the breeding season, they also eat seeds and other vegetable-based foods. The birds are famed for their skill, as they can cling to the outermost branches and hang upside down when looking for food.

THE ANIMAL CRUSADE

One day all the sties and burrows opened

And out came the cave-bear the mammoth the seafaring

cormorant, that poetic diving bird, the white-headed vulture

the rock-goat from the mountains, the sea unicorn

You could see by their snouts that they meant business

You could hear by their flapping wings and their burr

They had thrown off their humility, cast down their yoke

once imposed by Adam’s secretive hero

the one with the garden

They were, to cut a long story short, fed up

And the morals of the shotgun had been cast off

the flayed skin of flight had faded

The viper walked tall and the swine wore polaroid glasses

that lent him pleasant looks. The beavers

gnawed down telegraph poles and so cut off any form of communication

Predictably enough, the lion led the way black black

as black gold and gold-coloured as deep black

It was a magnificent procession, blinding to the eye

At the back the unicorn reported as missing, the dodo the passenger pigeon

as well as various viruses and the elated spermatozoids

So the holy animals

travelled the holy world

And do you know how or why?

Oh no, they just went travelling, they didn’t have a flag!

Sometimes ripped up laws out of sheer happiness

or bled a city dry

Now and then trampled on a Jesus

or struck down a prophet or a princess

They were beginning to get tired

Haste no longer necessary

The one day’s deities left the fire

To be here in peace, it is necessary to integrate, accept and respect the space of each living form in this dimension ... or simply accept the consequences of not doing so.

The design and operation of a windmill depended on various characteristics of the wind such as wind speed and changes in wind speed, wind direction and changes in wind direction, wind turbulence, and the height of the wind above the ground. An average windspeed of 15 to 25 miles per hour and a prevailing wind were necessary for operation of a mill. The critical component of a mill's operation was the sails. The force of the wind on the sails caused them to turn and rotate the axle, or windshaft, on which they were set. The brake wheel, located inside the top of the mill, also was attached to the windshaft, and its movement drove the millstones and all other machinery inside the mill.

Mills usually had four sails, but five, six, and eight-sailed mills were also built. The earilest sails were wooden, cloth-covered frames known as common sails. They were light and powerful but had to be stopped for the miller to furl the sails. As windmill design advanced, the cloth sails were replaced with sails with shutters. In 1807, William Cubitt invented a sail which could be adjusted while the sails were turning. The shutters of this sail could be opened and closed automatically and worked like venetian blinds to aid in utilizing the wind. A windmill's sails had to always be square into the "eye of the wind" as the mill was designed and balanced to resist pressure from the front only. If a mill was tail-winded, the cloths or shutters could be blown out, the cap blown off, or the mill itself blown over, often with the miller in it. Because the wind changes, the mill had to be capable of being turned into the wind whatever the direction. This was called "winding the mill." The turning gear was the tail pole, and bodily force was used to effect the turn.

Guess who thought it’s not necessary to bring a wool pullover. Snowshoes would be great, too.

May flower: the cactus that offers beauty instead of thorns:

The May flower - common name of the species Schlumbergera truncata - is one of those plants that we tend to despise most of the year. It is, after all, a true botanical commonplace:

since the days of grandma's gardens, it has been hanging around on any balcony or housed in cachepots on some furniture in the living room. It is also a champion of popularity in floras - ready to be pushed by sellers every time the consumer searches for a plant “for beginners”.

This is all true, yes. But, as I was able to feel myself this week, the fact that it is party rice does not eliminate the extraordinary value and the pleasure of having a May flower inside the house. And pleasure is precisely in the miracle that works, out of nowhere, in your metabolism. During most of the year, the May flower is a discreet little thing, with its branches formed by fragile and evergreen buds releasing at most new buds. Suddenly, sometime between the end of autumn and the beginning of winter, behold that dull plant explodes in buttons with extremely striking shapes and colors - mine, for example, pump out between May and July.

After flowering, it often withers, loses part of the buds and spends the rest of the year trying to recover from the excruciating effort of flowering.

The May flower is from the cactus family, but has no thorns. In its original habitat, the Atlantic Forest, it presents an epiphyte behavior. In other words: like orchids and many bromeliads, it uses tree trunks as a support. Thanks to horticultural improvement, the variety of colors available on the market today is immense. You can splurge, as you can see in this photo that illustrates this description, the flower of May WHITE.

Despite the fact that the May flower is a peaceful and favorable cultivation plant, some precautions are mandatory to avoid unpleasantness. Here is a basic guide to success:

1) SOIL - As it is a succulent, the may flower requires perfect drainage. She does, however, enjoy a lot of organic matter. So, plant it in pots with holes, filled with pebbles and sand at the bottom and the remaining two thirds completed with vegetable soil. Curiosity: if these conditions are met, the May flower can grow a lot and live for years in small pots.

2) WATERING - Do not overdo it and do not leave dishes filled with water under the pot, to avoid waterlogging and root rot. But also be sure to water frequently - two to four times a week, depending on the weather. She likes the slightly damp earth.

3) LUZ - This is, perhaps, the main catch. The May flower hates receiving direct sunlight, but enjoys well-lit environments. The right places for her, therefore, are balconies and bright interiors, but fresh. Or under the treetops.

4) FLOWERING - The May flower releases its buds when two variables combine: the nights become longer and the minimum temperatures are close to 10-15 degrees. And so it lives up to its name: in the Southeast of Brazil, these ideal conditions are usually registered between mid-May and the end of June.

5) POST-FLOWERING STRESS - May flower is a perennial species, that is, it does not die after giving flowers. Often, however, it cannot withstand the thud of its metabolic explosion: after so much effort, the stem buds become wilted and break easily. In the extreme, the plant dies from stress. To avoid this, it is necessary to redouble the care with nutrition. After flowering, increase the watering slightly and add a little earthworm humus or phosphorus-rich fertilizer (the “P” of the renowned NPK trio).

Last tip: take advantage of the loose buds to produce new seedlings. It's very easy, just fix a piece of them in moist soil.

Many thanks to everyone for your views, faves and supportive comments. These are always very much appreciated.

It is very friendly but not necessary to thank for my comments.

Solitude is necessary for any person, even an extrovert. Only in solitude is a person able to develop, analyze, create. This is an opportunity to replenish your mental resources and put everything in order.

When our friends suggested a trek through Cliff Gilker Park, we set out on a new adventure. It was a marvellous walk, and an opportunity to see an area new to us. During our adventure I took plenty of preliminary, recon shots with my phone, to record areas of interest. I would later return with my camera and equipment to then take the shots I wanted with the time necessary to set up.

The next number of photos will be from this wonderful place. It is deep with old growth trees, meanders through a maze of delight, and makes one stop to just look. This shot includes one of the few bridges that cross various gorges, and serves as a metaphor that "bridges" the old with this new journey.

This was the first image I shot, at this new favorite place. The composition is similar to my previous post; however the lighting is very different. Shot during sunset, I was able to record a wide range in contrast of light. A neutral density grad is necessary to keep both the sky and canyon details as correctly exposed as possible. Adjusting white & color balance in post-processing keeps tones looking very close to the way my eyes witnessed the scene.
