English, 18th Century
In the mid 18th Century, John Hadley of England had the clever idea of using mirrors and colored glass to eliminate the sun's harmful glare when making navigational measurements. The sun is seen in a mirror and its image is moved up or down by moving the index arm until it is seen "sitting" on the horizon, which is viewed at the same time though apiece of glass. Octants are so called because the bottom arc of their frame occupies an eighth part of a circle
