Claverton Pumping Station, 1811-13.

The Kennet and Avon Canal was built between 1794 and 1810, linking waterways between the River Thames at Reading and the River Avon at Bristol. Engineer John Rennie (1761-1821) was engaged and his designs for the canal included engineering solutions for the supply of enough water to serve the canal across the geologically porous and hilly terrain. Technical and legal problems were encountered as construction progressed, and led to alterations to the route and engineering methods. Close to the completion of the locks at Bath in 1804 it became apparent that the feeders in use would be insufficient for lockage requirements. In September 1804 the Canal Company Committee considered a number of options before deciding to build a relatively cost-effective water-driven pumping station at Claverton Mill, designed by Rennie. The pumps would use water mill technology with steam engine type beams to pump water from the river to the canal, a height of 48 feet. However, the purchase of the grist mill on the site was the subject of lengthy legal discussions with the owner. This was eventually resolved and an agreement for Patrick O’Brien to supply masonry for the project was agreed in December 1809. Building work for the pumping station was completed in October 1810, although the machinery was subject to further delays. The fitting out of the plant, including pipes supplied by Fox & Co.’s Neath Abbey Ironworks, took place during 1811 and 1812 and the pumping station was operational by March 1813.

 

Although much of the original pumping plant remains in situ, extensive modifications were necessary from a relatively early stage to maintain and improve the water pumping function. The two large coupled waterwheels that power the pumps suffered from sagging and an internal system of cast-iron stays was introduced to try to address the problem. However, the stays regularly broke and the wheels were “constantly under repair” in 1843. Harvey & Co. of Hayle carried out strengthening works including bolts and shackles in 1844. At the same time they supplied and fitted Harvey & West double-beat valves to the pumps, replacing the original bucket pumps and butterfly valves. Problems with the wheel continued and repairs were regularly carried out until a centre bearing was fitted in May 1858, which finally addressed the waterwheel problems in the long term.

 

The pumping station had come under the ownership of the Great Western Railway Company in 1852, and the company carried out regular maintenance and repair to the pumps and other plant until nationalisation in 1948. The pumping station was operational until 1952, when it was taken out of use and a centrifugal pump powered by a diesel engine was installed to maintain a minimum water level in the canal. The pumping station was restored in 1969-75 and has been maintained since that time, with electric pumps having been installed to serve the canal as part of a restored waterway that is under the care and management of The Canals and Rivers Trust.

I got onto the Birmingham Canal Navigations Old Main Line in Tipton at a bridge on Baker Street then walked as far as the Tipton Green Bridge. And then past Coronation Gardens to the Owen Street Bridge.

 

It was a nice and sunny day but was very cold!

HISTORY:

Unlike 'narrow gauge' navigations such as those in the Midlands, with their characteristic narrow boats set at around 70ft (21.4m) by 7ft (2.1m), the South Yorkshire Navigations were made to accommodate much larger Yorkshire keels. These were 61ft (18.6m) long by 15 ft (4.6m) wide and either powered by sail or bowhauled by the families that owned them if there was no wind. There were also 'horse marines', a man and horse who would tow the boat on the navigation for a price.

 

The canal's business was hit when the railway reached Sheffield in 1830. But the larger payloads the boats could carry helped ensure that the navigations survived longer than many of their smaller counterparts: indeed, such was the Don Navigation's traffic that its owners were able to command a position of strength in their dealings with the developing railway companies.

 

In the mid 18th Century the River Don was improved upstream to Tinsley, just eastwards of Sheffield, by locks. By 1819, the Cutlers Company had succeeded in building the Sheffield Canal right into the city centre. In 1802, the Stainforth & Keadby Canal connected with the Don to afford an alternate access to the Humber via the Trent, and the system was further expanded in the 1840s when the Dearne & Dove Canal towards Barnsley was bought out by the Don Navigation.

 

The navigation was taken over by the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway in 1864, with a separate company, the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Canal Company Ltd, formed in 1895. It was joined by arrow-straight New Junction Canal in 1905, connecting with the Knottingley and Goole section of the Aire & Calder Navigation. Despite the newer threat posed by road haulage, the navigations survived and were granted a new lease of life beyond the 1970s when they were upgraded to accommodate larger 700 tonne barges.

NSW Maritime has warned boaters of the need for continued caution on flood-affected South Coast waters.

GOC Hertfordshire's walk on 13 July 2019, a 14.8-mile circular walk from Tottenham Hale, down the Lee Navigation via Walthamstow Marshes, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Mill Meads to Bow Locks, down Limehouse Cut to Limehouse Basin, and up the Regents Canal to King's Cross. The Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation is made up of more than 40 miles of waterway linking Sheffield with the River Trent - the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, the Don Navigation and the Stainforth and Keadby Canal, along with the New Junction Canal linking across to the Aire and Calder Canal.

 

The River Don, serving Rotherham and Doncaster, was made navigable between Tinsley and Goole, on the River Ouse. Work began in 1722 but it wasn't until 1751 that the navigation was completed to Tinsley, where goods to and from Sheffield had to been transhipped by road. The section between Stainforth Side Lock and Goole had always been treacherous, being tidal and fast-flowing. In the 17th century, the Dutchman Vermuyden had straightened part of the channel, which became known as the Dutch River. This improved the drainage of the area, but the navigation remained difficult. Eventually, in 1802, the Stainforth and Keadby Canal opened, providing an easier route to the wide River Trent at Keadby.

 

The 4 mile long Sheffield and Tinsley Canal was opened in 1814, to carry boats between the navigable River Don at Tinsley, and a new basin close to the heart of Sheffield. During the Victorian period, a number of improvements were made to the Don Navigation, with some new locks and lock cuts constructed.

 

The New Junction Canal opened in 1905 - one of the last canals to open - to link with the Aire and Calder Navigation, for boats travelling to Goole and Leeds.

 

Originally, the lock sizes had been about 61' 6" long by around 15' wide between Sheffield and Keadby. In 1983, the locks all the way from the New Junction Canal to just short of Rotherham were extended to around 230' by 20' so that large 700 tonne barges and butties could use the locks together. This was part of a push to re-vitalise the waterway and encourage more traffic. Many new staithes and loading facilities were constructed.

 

Today, while there is still some commercial traffic on this waterway, many of the facilities and boats can be seen lying disused.

13. Sextants

English, 19th century

Sextants are so called because the arc of their bottom frames occupies a sixth of a circle, allowing navigators to measure wider angles. The best sextants feature scales engraved on silver or gold, which not only provided beauty but also greater accuracy.

 

Health & Company's "bell"' sextant was the favorite instrument used by the British Navy. The triangle-frame sextant features a silver scale, a vernier (an attachment for precise measurement) and extra telescopes for day or night use. The small "box" sextant was an ingenious miniaturization of the standard sextant, yet it still has the usual arrangement of mirrors and filters. It was made by Troughton and Simms, London.

As early as the 11th century, sailors were using this device to determine latitude by observing the angle of the sun over the horizon at noon. The revolving indicator was adjusted till the beam of sunlight shone through a hole in the upper vane to a hole in the lower vane. The badly damaged instrument was salvaged from a burned wreck in the Mediterranean. The replica was copied from one found on a galleon which sank off the coast of Florida in 1624

Navigation in 1973. This boat had no radar, no GPS (obviously), not even Decca Navigator. It did have this compass, a functional echo-sounding depth gauge, and a trailing log to measure distance run. That was a brass spinner on the end of a long line, with the other end hooked onto a simple revolution counter calibrated to read nautical miles. See www.flickr.com/photos/jandsw/48909200646
