Le grand voilier blanc polonais de plus de 55 m de long ne passe pas inaperçu sur le bord du quai du bassin Vauban. Ce deux-mâts, baptisé Fryderyc Chopin, est arrivé jeudi et repartira samedi dans l’après-midi. À bord de ce navire-école, un équipage de 50 marins qui se forme à la navigation à la voile. Au départ de Saint-Malo, ce brick à coque d’acier construit en 1991 aux chantiers navals de Gdansk, ira rejoindre Amsterdam.

Comme le Pogoria, l’Iskra II, le Kaliakra, le Dar Młodzieży et le Khersones, le Fryderyk Chopin a été dessiné par l'architecte naval polonais Zygmunt Choreń.*
il a été affrété un an comme charter pour le West Island College au Canada afin d'élargir son programme de formation à la voile. Puis il a servi au European School of Law and Administration, une université privée polonaise.
Le 29 octobre 2010, le navire a été signalé en état de détresse au large des îles Scilly, ayant perdu deux mâts à cause de coups de vent violent et d'une forte mer. Il était en croisière de trois mois et demi des Pays-Bas vers les Caraïbes avec 47 membres d'équipage à bord, y compris 36 stagiaires âgés de 14 ans. Bien qu'il y ait un moteur auxiliaire, le capitaine du navire ne l'utilisa pas, par peur des débris traînant sur l'hélice. Aucune blessure n'a été signalée. Le navire a été remorqué dans les eaux abritées de la baie de Falmouth sur 100 milles et trois jours de remorquage par le petit chalutier Nova Spero dont le capitaine, Shaun Edwards avait répondu à l'appel de détresse. Après règlement de différends au sujet des assurances, sa rénovation a eu lieu au chantier naval britannique "A & P" puis à celui de "Queens Wharf".
Depuis 2011, le navire est exploité par 3Oceans, un opérateur polonais de navire privé. Il sert de navire à The Blue School, un projet de formation à la voile organisé par la STS Fryderyk Chopin Foundation.

Le "Fryderyk Chopin" (pour respecter son écriture d'origine) a été dessiné par l'architecte naval polonais Zygmunt Choren, comme le Dar Mlodziezy. Le bateau, mis à l'eau en 1991, a servi de voilier-école pour la marine polonaise. Il peut embarquer à son bord 12 marins, 27 stagiaires et 17 passagers. En 2010, à l'occasion du bicentenaire de la naissance du compositeur Frédéric Chopin, le deux-mâts, long de près de 50 mètres, a cessé son activité de bateau-école pour sillonner l'Europe et promouvoir la Pologne et ses attraits.

Soldiers compete in the urban land navigation portion of IMCOM's Best Warrior Competition the morning of May 25. Competitors had to successfully locate four points and a checkpoint throughout Ft. Sam Houston using a DAGR, or Defense Advanced GPS Receiver, within three hours.

For this shot I thought it appropriate to show not just Ischia but some of the ship that made this survey of the Gulf of Naples possible.
Besides a communications whip antenna and a satellite-navigation receiver, there’s the young sailor who had the watch as starboard-forward lookout. He sits protected in a spray shield, peering into his binoculars one level up from the bridge. In addition to his sound-powered-phone headset, he’s wearing dungarees, the eminently practical and overtly nautical enlisted work uniform of that era.
Nowadays US Navy personnel are decked out instead in ridiculous GI-Joe camo outfits that show them for what they truly are—seagoing soldiers. A sure and certain sign of the empire's decline, as this video-game culture slides even further into its miles gloriosus "warfighter" phase.
And for one last time I have to engage in a bit of oceanography, which is always a nice change from the human. Note that in addition to the choppy-waved sea surface, there is a fine set of swells marching toward shore.
But now I do at last turn to the terrestrial. Unlike Capri, its sister isle on the other side of the Gulf of Naples, Ischia is not an extension of the sedimentary sequence of the Apennines. Instead, it’s quite thoroughly volcanic. That makes sense, since it lies directly off the Phlegrean Fields.
At far right (east) lies a little humpbacked mass of rock at least 98 ky old. Local geologists refer to it as a part of "ancient Ischia"—most other unsubmerged parts of the island being younger. It’s topped by the Aragonese Castle, complete with turrets and battlements not perceptible from this distance.
The high peak that dominates the main island is Mount Epomeo, which rises an impressive 788 m / 2,585 ft above the sea. Contrary to its appearance, it is not the crest of a volcano, but rather the highest horst block thrust upward from what once was a major caldera. That caldera formed after a big ignimbrite eruption in the Pleistocene, about 56 ky ago. This event produced the distinctively colored Mount Epomeo Green Tuff.
From about 55 ky ago to the present, the gaping topographic low produced by that magma-chamber emptying and subsequent volcanic collapse has been transformed into a resurgent caldera or, if you prefer, a resurgent dome. According to a leading and very plausible hypothesis, the tuff and breccia that floored the depression have been pushed up, as though by a giant fist, along old faults reactivated by the intrusion of a laccolith. It was the upward swelling of this lens-shaped body of new magma that gradually succeeded in creating the lofty prominence.
Could Ischia experience more active volcanism in the future? You bet. Its last eruption was, geologically speaking, only the faintest flick of an eyelash ago, in AD 1302.

I’m guessing that this paper was originally written, understandably enough, in Italian. But then it seems to have been rendered into English in a slapdash way using a singularly inept Artificial Stupidity translation program. Some of the word choices are risible (my favorite is “fringy faults”). Others are so bizarre that they obscure the authors’ meaning completely. Fortunately, the illustrations bear much of the essential message and are both well done and most helpful.

Infantry Developmental Phase 1 (DP1), soldiers conducted a course field exercise at 4th Canadian Division Training Centre Meaford, on July 13-14.
Participants trained in land navigation skills and mine warfare adding on to their soldiering capabilities. DP 1 is the period where soldiers undergoes basic training and earn their trade qualifications.
A Developmental Period (DP) is a timeframe in a career during which an individual is trained, educated, employed and given the opportunity to develop specific occupational or professional skills and knowledge. DP 1 of five periods of training. DPs are distinguished by a progressive increase in the levels of accountability, responsibility, authority, competency, military leadership ability and the knowledge of operations and war.

Les PP se distinguent par une augmentation progressive des niveaux de responsabilité, d’autorité, de compétence, de capacité de leadership militaire et de connaissance des opérations et de la guerre.

I recently met my old friend, John, for a stroll around Nottingham city centre, and a couple of beers. As usual, he took me to a couple of pubs that I had not been in before. This is The Navigation Inn, sitting beside Castle Lock, on the Nottingham Canal, just a short stroll from the city centre. Brilliant. Loved it. I will be back!
