The Godalming Navigation (Godalming to Guildford) opened in 1765 and is an extension of the Wey Navigation (linking Guildford to the Thames at Weybridge). This opened in 1653 - extremely early for an artificial navigation. Both are now owned by the National Trust following the end of commercial traffic in the 1960's. They are very attractive and peaceful and are a delight to cruise or walk beside.
This is the terminal wharf at Godalming. In the foreground is the horse-drawn trip boat Iona, in the process of mooring up. The motive power has been removed and can be seen on the towpath opposite. I assume that is the horse box that can be seen, ready to transport the horse back to its stables for the night. The steerer is pushing the stern of the old 1930's working narrowboat in to the bank using the rudder as a paddle. Though both boats visible are 7 foot wide narrowboats, these navigations are broad barge canals.

Stumbled upon a NOS set of vintage navigation lights made in Sweden in the early sixties in an online antique-store online. They are identical to the ones missing on our boat. Never seen similar anywhere else. And the store is located in SF! What are the chances?

This battleship was launched in 1940, commissioned in 1941 and served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She has been at this location as a museum ship since 1962. I visited this ship on April 13, 2018.

Calamanco Lock at Flixton was one of the original eight locks constructed on the Mersey & Irwell Navigation in the 1720s. The site was already weired to provide a head for an existing mill and the rise of the lock was 3ft 3ins. The original lock 68 feet long by 16 feet 4 inches wide to accommodate Mersey Flats. It was rebuilt in 1820 and extended to 72 feet 8 inches long as seen here. All was swept away in the early 1890s with the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal.
This image features in Bosdin Leech's history of the Manchester Ship Canal and was found with all the other illustrations dumped in a skip having been detached from the book at some time.

Our Daily Challenge ... gadget.
Our Tom Tom Satellite Navigation device is a great invention. We went to our daughter's place today to help with her house move. We didn't really need help to find our way home but this clever little gadget also accurately shows our speed, road speeds, speed cameras and the time we will get home. I took this just as we went into the Tugun Tunnel which takes us under the Coolangatta Airport.

The steep grassy slope in front of you is all that remains of the once spectacular 'Thomas' Boat Lift which was named after the chief designer, engineer Gordon Cale Thomas. This once sat in the grooves on which huge caissons, or tanks, containing cargo carrying boats were raised and lowered. On 10 July 1900, well-dressed crowds turned out to celebrate the grand opening.

Foxton Locks are a staircase flight of ten locks. Two groups of five locks, with a passing pound in between, and side pounds. Brick with some stone.
The top Lock has a single gate, followed by five chambers, all with double gates and footbridges. Beyond these, the passing pound, followed by a single gable and then five chambers descending, with double gates, the lower four chambers crossed by footbridges. Each chamber is brick lined and has an inset brick dated 1909.
As well as the famous staircase of 10 locks climbing up the hillside, there are also the remains of a gigantic Inclined Plane Boat Lift.
The Boat Lift opened on 10th July 1900 with a special ceremony, flags flying and guests in their best clothes. It was seen as the saviour of the canal at a time of huge competition from the railways and roads. Then, as now, people marvelled at the sheer scale of the engineering. Equally incredible was the hidden effort of the 300 men who built the huge boat lift, the two joining lengths of canal and all the associated buildings, largely by hand.
However, it was not a commercial success and only remained in full-time operation for ten years. The plane was dismantled in 1926.
