The boatmen are integral part of the life around Ganges. There are many who have rowed all their lives - as adolescents, adults and now elderly. They still start their day with a prayer to the sacred river. Come monsoons, the river often floods and they don’t earn enough even to make it to two meals a day. Their love for the boats and the Ganges keeps them at their oars. A ride with a chatty boatman is more than what Google can ever tell you about hotels, deals, prayer times, weather, godmen and weed.

The occasional yacht or sailboat going between the Gulf of Mexico and Charlotte Harbor beneath the setting sun made for great photography opportunities over the Christmas holiday. We were staying in the resort which comprised the second floor of the beautiful Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda... and I spent our stay there virtually with the camera in my hands.

This is the starting point for the ancient Golden Road walk in the Preseli Hills. The route is not explicitly waymarked with signs, requiring walkers to navigate using the path and a compass or map. Bwlch y Gwynt is a key point to begin the walk across the hills' spine, which is dotted with prehistoric remains like Bronze Age cairns and Iron Age hillforts.

A trio of Siemens ALC-42s bring the Empire Builder into Saint Paul and through the Minnesota Commercial Yard to gain access to the CPKC Merriam Park Subdivision. The thick snowfall added a layer of complexity to the already slow slog through the yard area here - adding about 10 extra minutes from the usual 15-20 minutes or transit time. I cannot figure out why the move through the yard here needs to be so slow and only seems to get slower. There are three potential switch points, and none of them are complicated. At the same time, who am I to judge?

Union Pacific C40-8 No. 9319 leads an 89-car Stockton, California to North Platte, Nebraska merchandise train through Garfield, Utah the morning of June 25, 1995. The train is navigating the historic LA&SL route called 'UP Garfield' by the railroad while the former Western Pacific at right is called 'WP Garfield'. Kennecott Copper's Smelter is in the background, nestled at the foot of the Oquirrh Mountains.

While at a point along the Rio Grande in the Santa Elena Canyon with a view looking upstream and to the west. This is the border of the US and Mexico with the latter on the image left. Even near noon, the noted 1500’ canyon walls keep much of the area in shadows with the sun's light.

My thoughts on compositing an image of this setting were to use the river flowing by as a leading line and have the canyon walls frame the view looking forward. Metering this was a little trickier, given the perceived high dynamic range with those areas in sunlight versus the others in shadows nearby. I decided that metering with the brighter areas would prevent any blown highlights. I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring the complete setting in an image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

Normally an early morning train, today's HOSR has been pretty delayed. Not unheard of for PSR, but I suppose I won't complain since that helped me catch it after work.

The train is navigating an S-curve on the edge of the former Shell Deer Park refinery (now owned by Pemex), where the Strang Sub switches routes after an alignment-change when TX 225 was built.

Today I missed the direct train home from work and ended up taking a longer route.

None of the following is a complaint. I do, of course, fully understand the need for social distancing measures. I did though want to record how I felt on the journey.

It was a very strange experience: seats taped up ‘out of use’, hardly any passengers at rush hour, lengthy one way systems to navigate. It all felt like landing in a very different country, but with elements of familiarity. It was the most surreal journey I’ve ever made.

The picture was taken at York and shows 802218 with a Newcastle to Liverpool Lime Street service. To be fair, the TPE trains have clear but discrete social distancing signs in the form reservation type labels with a red and cross/green and tick to indicate where to sit.

The Jvari Monastery (Georgian: ჯვარი, meaning cross) is one of the most iconic and historic sites in Georgia. Located near Mtskheta, the monastery is one of the most important religious and cultural sites in the country. Built in the 6th century, the monastery is known as one of the earliest examples of Georgian Christian architecture. It was built on the site where, according to tradition, Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia, erected a large wooden cross. Together with other historical monuments in Mtskheta, the Jvari Monastery has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994. The monastery is located on a hilltop with a beautiful view of the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari Kura rivers and the historic town of Mtskheta. The building is an example of a tetraconch central dome structure with four apses. Despite its simple design, it is considered a masterpiece of medieval architecture. The Jvari Pass begins at the monastery. The pass is located at an altitude of approximately 2,379 meters above sea level and offers spectacular views of the Caucasus. It is an important passage through the Caucasus Mountains to Russia. The area is particularly known for its rugged roads, and in winter the pass can be difficult to navigate due to heavy snowfall. The route offers breathtaking views of mountain peaks, valleys and rivers. The Georgian Military Road was originally used as a trade and military route. Today it is a busy road for freight transport to Russia.

The Jvari Monastery is located in Georgia, on a hilltop near the town of Mtskheta, about 20 kilometers north of the capital, Tbilisi. The ruins next to the Jvari Monastery are part of an old defensive structure and watchtower. The Jvari Monastery is located at a strategic point above Mtskheta, where the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers meet. In many cases, these ruins are remnants from the same or slightly later period, when they supplemented the religious sites with military protection against potential invaders. This location offers breathtaking panoramic views and holds deep historical and religious significance. Mtskheta, one of Georgia's oldest cities, was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Iberia. The monastery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its cultural and architectural importance.

Calcite crystals glint from faceted stalactites and stalagmites in one of the inner chambers of the Crystal Cave, Blue Hole National Park, Belize.

To reach the entrance, one walks approximately 45 minutes through the jungle and up a karst ridge to a steep opening into the earth. Gaining ingress involves a near-vertical down-climb of slippery limestone that requires both hands. Once inside, the enveloping warm, dark air is all surrounding, and the terrain consists of an incredible and confusing jumble of slippery large rocks. The path disappears into holes and crannies, down which I would not have thought to proceed. There were so many possible route choices, suffice to say that should our guide have decided to abandon us, we would have struggled to find our way back to the surface. In addition, the air was hot and humid such that we sweated profusely.

As we wended slowly deeper, occasionally we passed reminders that it was the Maya who first navigated these depths over one thousand years ago, by torchlight. There are numerous broken ceramic pots that the Mayan priests brought down to the depths of Xibalba, the underworld, for important ceremonies. Sometimes the pots were used to collect smoke, and then ritually broken to release the spirit, and other times smaller pots were used to collect blood offerings. Our guide, required by the government for entrance, informed us that caves were sacred spaces for the ancient Maya, similar to how modern cathedrals are perceived, and filled with the spirits of ancestors. We were also told that the Mayan priests and nobles who entered the caves would have ritually used suppositories made from multiple hallucinogenic substances in preparation for the descent (e.g., a mixture of peyote, psilocybin, nightshade, and others). Combined with only having torches for light, I can only imagine that our experience in the cave was far different in tenor from theirs.
