This is the second lighthouse located at Garðskagatá (translated Garden Point) on Garðskagi (translated Garden Peninsula) which lies on the northwest tip of the larger Reykjanes Peninsula, in south Iceland. Built to replace the lighthouse built in 1897, the new lighthouse stands at 28 meters (91.86 feet) and currently holds the record as the tallest in Iceland. Designed by Axel Sveinsson, an engineer, the lighthouse sits up on the rise above the beach safe from surf flooding and beach erosion which were issues at the old lighthouse. In 1944, US servicemen, who were rescued from a sinking Coast Guard ship, built the lighthouse and presented as a gift to the Icelandic people for saving their lives. The luminaries of the old lighthouse were transferred to the new lighthouse, but soon electric light replaced the oil light. The electricity came first from a wind farm, but later from a power plant. With the electric lights came increased luminance. In 1961, the lighthouse was equipped with Swedish lighting. At Garðskagi, the lighthouse keepers house, built in 1933 to a design by architect Einar Erlendsson, still stands. It was the permanent residence of the light keeper until 1979.

Both lighthouses, the old and the new, still stand on the Point. Some refer to the two lighthouses as the “Twin Brothers”. Byggðasafn Garðskaga or The Municipal Museum in Garður operates a museum complex which includes the lighthouses and the outbuildings on the lighthouse keeper estate. The boats and structures in the photo are part of the museum. I really enjoyed my short visit to Garðskagatá.

mari boine - suoivva

_______________________________________________

Listening to her music is very much like listening to nature itself, something we'd be well advised to do more of.

BOINE was born in Karasjohka, a small town in the Arctic regions of Norway that are also part of what is known as Samiland, named after the indigenous people whose blood she shares. The Samis were colonised by Christians, and their culture slowly eroded until it was dismissed as worthless, so BOINE became acutely aware of notions of conformity early on. Her music has always been fiercely proud of her heritage, seeking to celebrate Sami culture while bringing it to a wider audience, fired initially by her anger at the contemporary treatment of their traditions. But though she has not mellowed in her beliefs, convictions so strong that she refused to perform at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994 on the grounds that she did not want to be used as "an exotic decoration", she has always sought new ways to integrate her ideology into her work. Her blend of Sami folk traditions -- in particular the yoik -- with contemporary rock, jazz, electronica and other musical forms sourced from around the planet has made her a revered figure at home and abroad. From the release of her second album, Gula Gula (from 1989), on Peter Gabriel's Real World label, to 2007's collection of remixes by such acclaimed artists as Mental Overdrive and The Knife, her international status has been unquestionable.

Her songs are strongly rooted in her experience of being in a despised minority. Most of her songs are sung in Sami, speaks directly of 'discrimination and hate'. Her other songs are more positive, singing of the beauty and wildness of Sapmi (Lapland).

She sings in a traditional folk style, using the yodelling 'yoik' voice, with a range of accompanying instruments and percussion.

BOINE continue to push back boundaries, challenging listeners with bold musical initiatives and a rejection of expectations, all the time enchanting and invigorating her audience with her unearthly, haunting voice. And while the fact that she trades in a sound inspired by her cultural roots, sung largely in the language of her ancestors -- a language being slowly eroded by Western influences -- has led to her being classified as a 'world music' artist, her horizons are much greater and her appeal more far reaching than this might suggest. It is, as she herself suggests, "global music from the universal heart."

In a world that seems to spin increasingly fast, where shrinking borders are leading to the mass homogenisation of culture instead of enriching it, BOINE'S voice -- pure, worldly-wise and yet otherworldly -- is more vital than ever. Listening to her music is very much like listening to nature itself, something we'd be well advised to do more of.

Biography:

Mari Boine was born on November 8th 1956 in Gámehisnjárga by Karasjok. Educated teacher from the Regional College in Alta. Full-time musician since 1985. Her debut album Jaskatvuoda manna came in 1985, her breakthrough came in 1989 with Gula Gula .

Music can touch on strings you might not know you had. It can provide meaning, but it can also create moments which can't be defined. Moments which go to your core, that touch some sort of primal instinct, and that put you in a trancelike condition. Music can confuse you. But it can also make you feel happy, uplifted or enriched. And maybe even more whole.

Mari Boines music has this effect. You can't leave a meeting with Mari and her music untouched. That is, if you dare to let her get close. Her music is actually simple. It is in the meeting between the songs, her voice and the musicians in the band that it gains strength. And in the interaction with the listener, because you must meet Maris music with an open mind. If you dont give of yourself, you might not discover the wealth she has to offer.

Because Mari is exceptional. She is an artist who is difficult to categorize. Perhaps she's a Sámi artist, perhaps she's a practitioner of world music. Perhaps she makes music in the borderline between Sámi, other folk music, jazz and rock. Perhaps she's the sum of all this. Or perhaps she's just herself. A musician, singer and artist who's making her own mark. Who has gone down a road where she hasn't always seen the destination. And who is still travelling.

Hospital, a place where life is concentrated - between birth and dead. Concentrated and clear. With all facets of human emotions, from great joy to deep grief.

Part 1

_____________________________________________________________________________

[...] What was it? Had she heard right? From the shadowy depths in a quiet voice came to her:

"Have no fear. I will not hurt "

Kyrasa stammered:

"But .. I do not see you. Where are you? "

"I'm here. I watch you for a long time since you came here in my kingdom. "

"You watched - me"?

"Yes. And I believe that you deserve my protection. Your kindness and generosity will be rewarded."

"But who are you?"

"Look closely, you'll recognize me!"

Kyrasa stretched her senses like a bow, and there she saw. Immediately before her a big beautiful woman appeared in mink and gorgeous jewelry, which rang with every movement and gently melodic .. Her face was stern and inscrutable, the searching eyes saw and understood everything.

"Who are you?" Kyrasa whispered, confused.

"A legitimate question. I am the mistress of this spirit of the mountain, this cave. "

"A ghost?"

"Call it what you want. But I've lived here for ages. "

"For ages?"

"Yes. Only her bipeds are mortal. I pity her deeply. "

"So you're immortal ....! That's wonderful! I would also like it. "

"This is an understandable desire. But on Earth, in this middle world, everything is short-lived, everything passes, must die and be resurrected the old is replaced by new. Only this cycle is eternal! "

"In your presence is all bright, so calm, I no longer fear me from this place."

"Of course, here the rules of my spirit."

"But ... This is all so strange, so incomprehensible ...".

"Do not worry, with time you will understand many things. Now we met us. Go now, you have to go back into the white light. Go and fulfill your destiny. "

"But I ..."

"Take courage, fear not. I will always be with you. But mark my words my advice: Keep your good heart oneself. Let it always be open to something new, for the good. Was always trying to see as much as possible and to understand, then you will get the third eye, the eye of wisdom. And then you, the truth revealed, you will not only be bipeds, but a HUMAN." [...]

.

.

„Sieh genau hin, dann wirst du mich erkennen!“

„Seit Ewigkeiten?“

„Ja. Nur ihr Zweibeiner seid sterblich. Ihr dauert mich zutiefst.“

„Also seid Ihr unsterblich ….!

Doch merke dir meinen Rat: Bewahre dir dein gutes Herz.

Who is in the house of my heart,

I cried in the middle of the night.

Love said,

"It is I, but what are all these images that fill your house?"

I said, they are the reflection of your beautiful face.

She asked,

"But what is this image full of pain?"

I said, it is me lost in the sorrows of life

and showed her my soul full of wounds.

She offered me one end of a thread and said:

"Take it so I can pull you back

but do not break the delicate string."

I reached towards her but she struck my hand.

I asked, why the harshness?

She said,

"To remind you that whoever comes to love’s holy space,

proud and full of himself will be sent away.

Look at love with the eyes of your heart.

“Cut-a-way view of Vertical Assembly Building, showing Launch Control Center and Launcher Umbilical Tower in background. Copied for Al Lavender, presentations.”

Still/initially referred to as the "Vertical" Assembly Building. The stages are labeled...wonderfully quaint & instructive. Note in/across the background, the rather extensive rail lines, apparently originally intended. To clarify the hand annotated description, the LCC is the smaller squat building to the right.

Stunning & most iconic work by the multifaceted and (I think) rather eclectic Don Mackey. One of the "lesser unknown" artists during the time of Apollo.

It’s on the cover, modified to reflect the content. Mr. Mackey actually gets “top billing:

ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19660006900...

Al Lavendar appears to have been a NASA spokesman during at least the latter half of the 70's. Obviously, he was already the ‘face’ of NASA...KSC at least, to whatever degree even in 1964...cool.

"Artist's concept of Vertical Assembly Bldg, and area, Complex 39.

SHOT FOR: Joe Robertson"

Initially referred to as the "Vertical" Assembly Building. The labeled 'S-IVB' stage of the Advanced Saturn(?)/Saturn C-5(?) can be made out. The extended length between the Command Module & S-IVB probably indicates that Direct Ascent was still under consideration. Note also the stationary/static "Arming Tower", to the far right, just off the crawlerway, later to evolve into the "Mobile Service Structure":

A beautiful work by the multifaceted and (I think) rather eclectic Don Mackey. The detail & 'character' of Mr. Mackey's works demands further browsing & the perusal of the subtle details & nuances...kinda like swishing wine around in your mouth - if you do that sort of thing. Even/especially(?) his postcards merit a closer look!

Is this a sublime Legend or the terrible truth? No one knows to say. The countless years that have mysteriously droned in the depths of the heavens resounded silent about it.[...]

Ancient nomadic tribes, whose traces have long since wiped out, bowed in front of you in reverent worship. You touched their complaints and entreaties? .... The old woman is silent.

But there comes a time when the fog clears and the undeservedly forgotten shadows rise again. The secret is revealed. Want the time has come for the biped living to tell about it, those who see everything, know everything and want to understand .... [...]

.

.

'Maybe ten years' replied the master.

'And if I am particularly make an effort, how long does it take?', Asked the students.

'In that case, it may be twenty Jahre "replied the master.

'But I take really any hardship on me. I want to go as quickly as possible to your destination ', protested the young man.
