In dawn’s hush by the water’s gleam,
Where reeds sway soft in a waking dream,
A ghost in white begins to glide—
A spoonbill steps with solemn pride.
Her bill, a paddle of ancient grace,
Draws silver trails in the water’s face.
She dances slow, side to side,
In search of life the tides may hide.
No song she sings, no boast, no cry,
Just silence cloaked in the open sky.
Yet still she holds a timeless lore,
Of wind, and wing, and mythic shore.
So still the world when she takes flight,
A feathered wisp in morning light—
A breath of snow against the blue,
A fleeting peace the wild once knew.
Silence spreads like a wordless prayer. The lake breathes slowly, as time dissolves along the line where water meets sky. Nothing asks for haste.
There is an invisible dialogue between she and the horizon – a conversation that needs no sound, only presence. The tree, stripped of its leaves, understands. It bends with the wind but stands tall, holding secrets that winter cannot erase.
The bench is not just a place to rest but a space where thoughts drift lightly, dancing between what is and what once was. Solitude, here, does not weigh heavy. It spreads like light over the water, turning every absence into a poem.
At the lake’s edge, what feels missing becomes whole.

Four baby squirrels, likely around 5 weeks old. We picked up all four, literally.....Remember Kathy Bates in Rat Race? lol Well, these came free.
They showed up in our neighbor's driveway, three sitting on the pavement next to the running board of the neighbor's truck and then the fourth one jumped down from the tree by the driveway and joined his siblings on the ground. Their mother apparently had gone missing a few days prior so the four little ones were left to fend for themselves. Dehydrated and hungry they followed us around and so we gave them the essentials, 1st water and then tiny bits of apple and broccoli.
It wasn't long before we got the call we were waiting for. We were fortunate to find a home for them @https://www.rideauwildlife.org

I'm glad that I am not one of those people who need someone else to go out exploring, never have been....even in my youthful days. On this particular night hiking alone my feet were sore but my heart was full. I'm also grateful I never let people who are negative influence my life---you know the kind, highly judgemental, where nothing you say or do is good enough and ALWAYS wrong. (I'd hate to live in their head) It's the simple joys like fresh powder glowing in a setting sun or a perched eagle that bring out my free spirit. These photos remind me to be positive & hopeful in a world so often full of hate, greed and darkness ...where only pain lives....
The woods of an ancient place that for centuries was a family estate, originally the site of an 11th century Norman hall and tower that are now part of a college of arts and crafts in Devon, the beautiful southwestern county between Cornwall and Dorset.
English gardens are characterized by their combination of formal and wild elements. Dartington is no exception. This area, is part of the 'wild element', and indeed, it was such a haven for me, after having traveled for one month in urban capitals. I live in the forest and was glad to be among familiar friends: trees!
The late winter light (very early March) - so low in the sky - blasted a radiant path through the woods, adding magic to the scene.
(All I had with me was a 3.2 megapixel Olympus Camedia. My exposure could have been more true. Just a beginner here, though, with the use of digital cameras that are automatically calibrated for the shot. Clearly one needs to take several shots, pointing the camera in different places to allow the camera to calibrate different exposures.)
Oh well. I still love the feeling here, and couldn't get enough of the place! I returned the next day to take more pictures. :-)

Stayed home Friday with a cold and Melissa had a worse one. We decided a little time on the rocks in the sun by the river might help. Don't know if it helped the cold or not but it sure was good for my soul to spend the time with her.
