These two armadillo pups were busy sniffing through the soil, side by side, totally absorbed in their search. Their matching poses made for a fun moment to capture.
I spotted them in my yard here in Arkansas. It’s not every day you see armadillos out in the open like this, especially a pair of young ones.
These are likely Nine-Banded Armadillos, the only species found this far north. Their tough, banded shells and long snouts are perfectly adapted for rooting through the earth in search of insects.

The female common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) is a fascinating bird, distinct from her male counterpart in both appearance and behavior. While males are glossy black with iridescent purple and green hues, females have a more subdued brownish coloration, often appearing slightly duller with less iridescence

***Note later comments below!***Thanks to Coastlander for pointing out that it's not a caterpillar if it's eating a mushroom--they only eat plants. So, it's some kind of insect larva. And I'd like to know.
Acraea terpsicore, the tawny coster, is a small, leathery, winged butterfly which is common in grassland and scrub habitats. It belongs to the Nymphalidae or brush-footed butterfly family.The tawny coster is one of a group of butterflies where females feature a sphragis which is formed after a mating session. After males produce the spermatophore, they pass an additional gland secretion that spills out of the female's copulatory opening, forming a mating plug that hardens within a few hours for the purpose of preventing further matings.
