A tranquil aerial view of a rewetted peatland, where lush greenery meets still waters under a dramatic sky. Once drained, this restored ecosystem is now a thriving habitat and a key ally in climate mitigation. The mirrored clouds on the water’s surface contrast with ghostly tree stumps, symbolizing past exploitation and current hope.

Expansive and serene, this image captures the rebirth of a once-drained peatland now restored to its natural hydrology. Rewetted peatlands like this play a vital role in climate protection, carbon storage, and biodiversity recovery. Pine trees frame the scene, while the mirrored sky and scattered wetland islands convey a sense of balance and renewal.

In 2019, UNDP built the world's largest and fastest learning network on sustainable development challenges. We started with 60 Lab teams covering 78 countries and are now expanding to 90 Labs covering 114 countries. We create actionable intelligence, test solutions with national partners.

In Ukraine, our lab recently explored solutions to address noise and air pollution in the capital, Kyiv. One of the teams from the Community Safari, a quest to identify green solutions for cities, came up with a two-in-one solution – install a wall of moss that both cleans the air of pollutants and absorbs noise.

"Moss has good air cleaning properties, and better noise insulation could be achieved if more walls like this were set up along the embankment later,” says Anastasia Sakva who told us how their team came up with the idea, and how they implemented it.

"We wanted people to have a place where they would enjoy spending time. So we came up with the idea to create a living wall. Such landscaping is much more than just decor,” says Vlad Dehtyarenko, author of the experiment in Kyiv’s Podil district.

"Our initiative is a proof that it’s an achievable task to bring about positive changes in your district. Our main mission is accomplished: the living wall prevents dust, noise and makes Naberezhno-Khreschatytska Street more comfortable."

Find out how the idea was hatched, and what lessons the activist learnt while participating in Community Safari, organized by the UNDP's Accelerator Lab, Agents of Change” and “Green Wave” EcoClub.
