... stacking stones or cairns were used in the past as signposts, that is still the case but it is also a very beautiful symbolic gift; I will show you the way - I will help you to the top - or just very beautiful to put somewhere or to give to someone as a gift ...

Triangles, ovals, some flat and others round, each with defined rings and eons of of being polished by the sea, these Natural Stones are remarkable. Each ancient wonder easily fits in the palm of your hand.

There are many stones in our garden but occasionally the gardener frog finds a special one. :)

Constructed in 1938 using WPA labor and natural stone. A beautiful structure constructed with natural stone and continuing to serve the community.
Seen on Holy Island (Lindisfarne). There is a whole beach like this.

This is a wider place in the canyon of Bürs (the "Bürser Schlucht") - my preceding photo shows a narrower spot with bridges.
Here you could sit on a small pebble beach and people had made piles of stones. the sun was shining, the river was murmuring, and I thought it was a lovely place!

One of my favourite little locations, a good walk from Sligachan on Skye. Although compositions are a bit limited, I've shot it on a number of occasions as the stone pebbles that surround the water keep changing, presumably due to the flow of water.

I have a few glass bowls at home full of natural stones that I collected in different places. All are associated with moments and places that mean something to me. In a way, they store memories.
The bowl that I used for this photo contains two different collections. Pebbles that I picked up with my boyfriend in a nearby beach early in our relationship, and fossils of Jurassic brachiopods from the limestone hills next to my grandpa's vineyard.
At daybreak, even before sunrise, the children’s stepmother came and woke the two children. "Get up, you lazybones!” she said, shaking them roughly. “We are going into the woods to fetch wood." Then she gave each one a little piece of bread, saying, "Here is something for midday. Don't eat it any sooner, for you'll not get any more."
Grethel put the bread under her apron, because Hänsel's pockets were full of stones. Then all together they set forth into the woods. After they had walked a little way, Hänsel began stopping again and again and looking back toward the house.
The father said, "Hänsel, why are you stopping and looking back? Pay attention now, and don't forget your legs."
"Oh, father," said Hänsel, "I am looking at my little white cat that is sitting on the roof and wants to say good-bye to me."
The stepmother said, "That isn't your cat, you stupid little fool! That is simply the morning sun shining on the chimney. Now come along, before I take a switch to you!"
However, Hänsel had not been looking at his cat but instead had been dropping the shiny pebbles from his pocket onto the path.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 15th of March is "natural stones". A stone is what you typically pick up and hold. A stone is much smaller than a rock, meaning that it is moveable, such as cobbles and pebbles. In this case, I have picked up a pebble that washed into my garden from the property next door to mine. They have a path made of natural stones that runs along the edge of where our properties join. It seemed like a pretty and interesting stone, which I thought perfect for this week’s theme. I hope that you do too, and that it makes you smile!

Love a painted stone, my lovely friend Jane is so talented and painted these stones for me.
One is of my little dog and the rose is in memory of my late husband.
They are with the stones I paint with messages for my late husband’s grave.
As a kid I used to collect a lot of stones, so it was hard to choose which one of them should be on the photo, since I like all of them a lot.
Thank you so much for your visit, comment and fav! Have an awesome weekend! 😊
Happy Smile on Saturday.

(101/366) I brought back 2 more stones from the Hook peninsula in Wexford to add to my collection of "lucky stones" on the mantelpiece (the flat yellow one left of centre & the purple one behind it). I've 24 in total now, all from beaches in Ireland. They don't seem to be bringing me much good luck lately but hopefully that will change soon & a new buyer for our house will come along.
