Sitni, gotovo nevidljivi, a tako važni.

Pauci, vješti tkalci svilenih zamki, tihi su saveznici u borbi protiv dosadnih insekata.

Na prvi pogled neugledni, a pod svjetlom jutra – čudo prirode.

Tiny, almost invisible, yet so important.

Spiders, master weavers of silk traps, are silent allies in the battle against pesky insects.

At first glance unremarkable, but under morning light – a wonder of nature.

Rolling red Toyota blind wildlife shots, continued... with a shot from last spring.

Coyote has nabbed a Prairie Dog! Although its eye is open, I want to assure everyone that this is a dead rodent: I had just watched the Coyote kill it. Coyotes learn at an early age how to dispatch their prey efficiently. A quick bite to stun and immobilize, then a hard shake to snap its neck. It was over in seconds. This happened while I rolled to a stop in my car. I stopped some distance away so as not to interfere in any way by distracting... and then got lucky when the Coyote trotted past me.

I am emotionally neutral in these situations. I have to respect the process. The Black-tailed Prairie Dog is a keystone species in that it creates habitat for Burrowing Owls, and provides food for predatory mammals and birds, eg. hawks, eagles, badgers, weasels, and of course coyotes. Everything exists in balance. This Coyote didn't stop to eat its kill, so perhaps it returned to the den to feed a litter of pups, or a mate that was nursing pups. The timing would be about right for that.

El equilibrio de lo imperfecto es lo que hace a este universo perfecto

the small harbor of portixol at duskâit's a quiet symphony of simplicity. the silhouette of a fishing boat drifts by, pulling your eyes across the calm ripples toward the soft glow of the lighthouse. on the rocks, a solitary figure sits, lost in thought, cradled by the rhythm of the sea. the drama in the clouds tells one story, the stillness of the water another. together, they create a balanceâchaos above, serenity below. this moment isnât staged. itâs simply there, existing for those who pause long enough to notice.

The sun leans gently into the horizon, painting the dunes in liquid gold. A woman stands still, rooted like an ancient tree, yet light as wind. Her silhouette dances with the fading light, a quiet hymn to the setting day. The sand cradles her steps, tracing stories soon to be swept away by the whispers of the evening breeze.

In this fleeting moment, time dissolves. The mountains bow in the distance, and the sky hums softly, wrapping the earth in warmth. The delicate lace that adorns her moves like petals in the air – fragile, yet woven with strength. She stands not against nature, but with it, becoming a thread in the vast, eternal fabric of land and sky.

This is not merely sunset; it is a symphony of stillness. In the heart of Florianópolis, where the dunes stretch like ocean waves, the ordinary melts into the extraordinary. The dance of shadow and light leaves behind an unspoken truth – that beauty exists in the quiet, the pause, the breath between one step and the next.

Taken yesterday after a passing storm . No it's not Louisiana but the ecology here in coastal Carolina is so close to what they have on the Louisiana gulf coast . What you see is a Salt Marsh , part of an estuary , There are hundreds of square miles of this Spartina grass . Here's how it works ...with each tide cycle the marsh is flooded bringing out the rich nutrients that are necessary for the sea to survive . All of that grass you see is Spartina or Cord grass it slowly deteriorates into a form called Detritus ...That my friends is what Shrimp , Oysters , Mussels , Crabs eat for their existence . And guess what eats those creatures...not only us , but hundreds of species of birds and fish . Now let's take like a couple of million barrels of crude oil and on the high tide pour it all through these beautiful coastal marshes . Getting the idea ? But who's to blame ? BP , with there great little ecological marketing campaign ? The government , their always easy to blame , but perhaps we need to look at ourselves .Yes , us in developed nations that have built "and expect" lifestyles that are totally dependent on oil . I can cry at what will happen on the U.S gulf coast and I believe very few will really understand the importance of it ...hence my rant and my photo for today .

Taking the air.

Trying to regain a natural balance.

I have had little access to the Net for the previous 5 days but I have taken the opportunity to catch up with lots of unprocessed exposures made over the last few years. This particular image is a new one though - I am always struck by the dominance of nature in rural areas and there is a fine balance between mankind living more natural lives in basic unobtrusive accommodation.

In response to a question asked of me here, I did a little research on Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance® Original Ultra™ Ultra-Premium Dry Cat Food. I was comparing Natural Balance chow with Kirkland's Signature Brand which I am feeding to my own cats with great results.

Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance® Original Ultra™ Ultra-Premium Dry Cat Food is made with:

Chicken Meal, Chicken, Brown Rice, Duck Meal, Barley, Oatmeal, Chicken Fat (Preserved With Natural Mixed Tocopherols), Potatoes, Carrots, Lamb Meal, Salmon Meal, Canola Oil, Natural Flavor, Dried Egg, Brewers Yeast, Whole Ground Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Spinach, Parsley Flakes, Cranberries, L-Lysine, L-Carnitine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Kelp, Zinc Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Potassium Iodide, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Manganous Oxide, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid.

I do see some good ingredients in this chow, and it does seem like a step in the right direction since it does not contain gluten, by-products or corn, but that word, MEAL keeps popping up. It occurs four times near the top of the label. In fact the very first and most important ingredient is chicken MEAL, not chicken. (Kirkland's has chicken meal listed too, but it's only listed once, not four times, and it's listed second, after chicken, so real chicken is the main ingredient in Kirkland's.)

Franny Syufy writes in her article "What cat food ingredients should I avoid?",

Meat Meal, Meat By-Product Meal

"Meal" is generally produced by rendering, a process which raises a red flag to cat enthusiasts. I would definitely recommend avoiding cat foods containing these ingredients.

Here's a paragraph from the Born Free USA website article "What's Really in Pet Food?" that explains rendering:

What is rendering? As defined by Webster’s Dictionary, to render is “to process as for industrial use: to render livestock carcasses and to extract oil from fat, blubber, etc., by melting.” In other words, raw materials are dumped into large vat and boiled for several hours. Rendering separates fat, removes water, and kills bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other organisms. However, the high temperatures used in rendering (270°F/130°C) can alter or destroy natural enzymes and proteins found in the raw ingredients.

I found the following bragging statement to be particularly deceptive, in light of the information provided above about rendering:

"Fresh Chicken, Duck Meal, New Zealand Lamb Meal Premium quality meats and New Zealand Lamb Meal. This unique blend of fresh, high quality proteins provides the essential amino acids to help maintain strong muscle tone and a healthy, shiny coat."

I like the way they list Fresh Chicken here, but it's third on the ingredients panel, after chicken MEAL and Rice. How can they call meat MEAL "Premium quality meats"? or "Fresh"??? How can they say that this product has any high quality proteins or essential amino acids at all after being rendered? If you sat down at a top quality restaurant and ordered a steak dinner, and they put before you a plate of boiled animal mush sprayed with expired french fry grease, would you feel like you got a quality dinner?

I also note that Natural Balance chow contains POTATOES. The person who first mentioned this chow to me and posed the question that started this latest chapter of pet chow research said that her cat was nothing but bones and fur. Potatoes would certainly be a source of calories for a cat to gain weight. But keep in mind that cats are natural carnivores, and don't require carbohydrates at all. The potato carbs might put weight on your kitty, but I would prefer the cat to gain muscle mass, not fat. I do not recommend this food or foods that contain corn products for overweight cats. I would rather see a cat gain weight from eating more protein from quality meats.

Overall, I would say (remember, this is only MY opinion, not science!) that Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Utlra Premium Cat Chow is an okay food. It's certainly a better choice than Iams, or many other supermarket brands available for lower cost, but the label claims that the chow is "ULTRA PREMIUM", and I can't say it is either.

You can read about Natural Balance "Diet" Cat Chow here.

American Idol judge Paula Abdul and actor Dick Van Patten from Natural Balance Pet Foods speak in this video about National Guide Dog month and how they have teamed up with PETCO to raise money for Guide Dogs schools across the country,

I don't care how jaded a New Yorker you are, a dog on a skateboard is awesome.

I mean, it's a dog.

On a skateboard.

If you don't like this you're either dead inside or The Devil. Probably both.

If you feed your dog Dick van Patten's Natural Balance dry food, please be warned the venison and rice variety has been linked to illness and kidney problems. In addition, the venison and green pea dry CAT food is also problematic.

You should discontinue use right away -- as we did this morning. Mick has had some digestive distress off and on over the past couple of weeks. We are going to check in with the vet this morning.

There is some (very little) information on the company's web site: www.naturalbalanceinc.com. We're hoping for more information soon!

I cooked breakfast for our spoiled little pup this morning: rice, chicken and carrots. He was thrilled!

At the shop, our food retailer was doing a promotion for Natural Balance dog food and asked us if we could snap a photo of an end cap for them. Free skateboard (as you know, their promodogs are Bulldogs, and skate on the board.)

Basically, we had to have the skateboard, the poster, the box and the stuffed dog and some food in it.

The person there was like "Oh gosh, just a cell phone pic is fine!"

.. hahahaha. Well, we saw that skateboard and said -- if a Bulldog can do it, a Cardigan Corgi can too!

Lots of fun to try to shoot this -- used a backdrop sheet, and learned a lot. ;) I don't envy ad photographers one darn bit. Give me a running dog any day! ;)

PS: Simon totally wants to keep the skateboard. I told him that he can't put his name in for it, because we're related. He mentioned to put the cat's name in, he's of no relation, and heck, he wouldn't want it anyway. ;)

PPS: He says the treats are pretty tasty.

A quiet woodland path stretches forward beneath towering pines, the forest floor carpeted with fallen autumn leaves. Just off the trail, a hare darts through the undergrowth, barely disturbing the stillness of the scene. Caught mid-motion, it adds a fleeting sense of life to an otherwise calm and timeless landscape.

The image plays on contrast: solid vertical trunks and a well-trodden path against the sudden, almost accidental presence of wildlife passing through. It’s a reminder that even familiar woodland routes are shared spaces, where nature continues its rhythms just beyond our attention.

Natural Balance SYNERGY dog formula, the food that powers Tillman & Rose

We got some samples of this food from Petco right after we got her and she liked it. Today I went back and bought more at lunch and cut up one pack of it. She ate the slices within seconds. So I opened the other one and she ate about half of it. I will save this bit for later and buy more on my way home. I don't want her to eat too fast and get sick that way. Hopefully, her shaking and trembling is just from not eating enough and maybe this will get her back on track along with her meds.

These two gift baskets were donated to us for our 2008 Raffle Fundraiser by the local Petco and Natural Balance! One is a Nature's Balance Dog Basket, and the other is a Nature's Balance Cat Basket. These are two of the many prizes we will be giving out in December when we pull the winning raffle tickets. raffle@acadianahumane.org
