The World War II Memorial is a memorial of national significance dedicated to Americans who served in the armed forces and as civilians during World War II. Consisting of 56 pillars and a pair of small triumphal arches surrounding a plaza and fountain, it sits on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on the former site of the Rainbow Pool at the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool, between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
Opened on April 29, 2004, it was dedicated by President George W. Bush on May 29, 2004. The memorial is administered by the National Park Service under its National Mall and Memorial Parks group.

Meet Stumpy! The most resilient Cherry Blossom tree around the Tidal Basin in Washington DC.
Stumpy survives in an area of the Tidal Basin that routinely floods with the tides. But alas this is Stumpy’s last year. The tree, along with 300 others are scheduled to be removed in May to make way for reconstruction of the sea wall where they currently live. Stumpy will live on though, the National Arboretum plans to propagate clippings from Stumpy and replant them after the project is completed.
I had to get one last photo of Stumpy in bloom.

My first time in Washing D.C. since 1993. A lot has changed. Suffice it to say; I do not like this place at all anymore.

U.S. Capitol Building & Christmas Tree
Washington, District of Columbia

According to the website, Architect of the Capitol:
"Today, the U.S. Capitol Building covers a ground area of 175,170 square feet, or about 4 acres, and has a floor area of approximately 16-1/2 acres. Its length, from north to south, is 751 feet 4 inches; its greatest width, including approaches, is 350 feet. Its height above the base line on the east front to the top of the Statue of Freedom is 288 feet; from the basement floor to the top of the dome is an ascent of 365 steps. The building contains approximately 540 rooms and has 658 windows (108 in the dome alone) and approximately 850 doorways."
The United States Capitol building is an icon of Washington D.C. and the nation, playing host to the Senate and the House of Representatives. President George Washington selected the neoclassical architecture of the Capitol in 1793. The United States Capitol building is situated at the far eastern end of the National Mall; the Washington Monument is situated 1.4 miles directly west; the Lincoln Memorial some 2.2 miles directly west. This particular morning the sky was heavily overcast and allowed for only the first pre-dawn light to infiltrate and color the sky, casting a strange pink/purple hue on the cloud cover. Shortly after the skies turned the typical overcast steely gray of winter.
Happy Holidays to all of my Flickr contacts here in the United States!
People accuse me of “Photoshopping” my photographs. That’s crazy! All my photographs are SOOAA, that is “straight out of Apple Aperture.”
I was walking in Lafayette Square, a public park located directly north of the White House, in Washington, DC last week. I noticed these cumulus clouds and composed a couple of photographs. I know this is Washington, DC where everything is an illusion, but I pulled no magic tricks in post-production. I simply increased the contrast and bumped up the vibrancy. Mother nature gets all the credit for this one.
It has been a roller coaster week here in the nation’s capitol. Scandals have burst over the political weather front from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) limiting free speech to the Justice Department spying on reporter’s phone records.
I guess my “Photoshopping,” I mean my SOOAA skills, aren’t the only scandals brewing in Washington, DC.
Happy Travels!
