If I had taken one step closer, that picture would have been an action shot of me running with a mother duck chasing close behind...

Washington DC

This is an HDR merge of a few shots taken from the Washington Monument on Easter morning. In spite of the complete dysfunction inside the structure, it's still quite majestic. I'm hoping for a change in leadership in 2018.

Martin Luther King Memorial, Washington DC

On Saturday, a friend of ours from Michigan flew to D.C. as an escort on an “Honor Flight.”

The Honor Flight program arranges for World War II vets from all over the country to fly to Washington D.C. and view the World War II Memorial. Most of the vets are over 80, and many are infirm. The program is a tremendous tribute to “The Greatest Generation.”

Here are some more details:

We spent Saturday visiting with our friend and the vets. It was a great honor, and a tremendous experience.

Washington, DC, USA.

I took a walk around the Constitution Gardens area of the National Mall early Sunday morning. It seemed to be a great day for the squirrels; the weather was perfect and there was plenty to eat. Many trees were dropping their blossoms and dandelion salad was on the menu as well.

Visitors enjoy the lush grass and blue skies at the National Mall - America's Front Lawn - in Washington DC. Smithsonian Castle is at left, Washington Monument at center rear.

3 1/2 years into an estimated 5 1/2 year project, this is what the National Mall currently looks like. This is what I'm taking to Bricks Cascade at the end of February.

There will be one significant addition that is not shown in this photo and that's lighting the Mall (or as much of it as I can before arriving in Portland).

As you can see, so much more work to do. But this year I've added the Air & Space Museum, the Department of Agriculture, a test build of the Hirschhorn and the U.S. Forest Service Headquarters.

I also built a version of the White House so folks can compare its size to the buildings on the Mall.

There will also be assorted little builds showing techniques and process, the John Klesh challenge and a surprise build.

So, if you're interested and in the Portland area, come to Bricks Cascade, stop by the Microscale area and say hello.

Catching the last light of a Sunday evening at a busy Lincoln Memorial. Uploaded a similar version of this shot but after going through my photos I like this one better.

After so many days of rain

Reflecting Pool at Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC. Dec. 25, 2015 (Lincoln Memorial 20121225-2855)

I suspect many of the millions of visitors that come to the National Mall every year do not realize there is a scenic park and lake called Constitution Gardens. It's bounded by Constitution Avenue and the Reflecting Pool near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I go by every time I'm near to see what wildlife is there. I've seen the ubiquitous Mallards and Canada Geese of course, but also Northern Shovelers, Ring-necked Ducks, Pie-billed Grebes, Great Blue Herons, Egrets and Night Herons.

This is an early morning shot from Easter morning looking northwest. The high-rise buildings in the distance are in Rosslyn, VA across the Potomac River from DC.

View LARGE to see the pink reflections from the flowering Magnolias (posted previously).

On July 2nd I took a long walk around the National Mall. Though I live in the District and I've been there many times, I always enjoy the monuments, the gardens and the sights and sounds of the visitors. I'm not under any pressure to see everything; I just photograph whatever catches my eye. Several of the Smithsonian museums have very nice gardens, and I can never resist the bees.

I shot this last year during the Cherry Blossom season just prior to sunrise. Some wonderful light and early bloom at the Washington DC Tidal Basin.

Sometimes I'd rather just have the leaves. On the Mall in front of the Museum of the American Indian.

Typical Sunday morning on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and the reflecting pool

National Mall, Washington, DC

I got back last night from the trip to DC; I had an amazing time, and later today I'll get a chance to upload the other photos (and videos to show the feeling of being in the middle of the crowd).

General US Grant looks west over the National Mall towards Arlington and points west on a mild Dec. 27.

Sometimes you try to see within the mind of a child, and realize there is more than meets the eyes.

This bee was oblivious to me or the thousands of other visitors to the National Mall.

featured in the December issue of Modern Luxury DC magazine.

We gathered 100 Quilts quilts at the DC Modern meeting. we were going to do a photo shoot, but as you can see, the reflecting pool leaves much to be desired right now!

Two or three times per year I do a walkabout along the National Mall in Washington DC (a 2-mile long green space home to dozens of monuments, memorials, museums and gardens). This is a (dimly lit) view of a portion of the WW2 Memorial with the Washington Monument in the background..
