The bronze sculpture Maman, a work by the French artist Louise Bourgeois, is one of the most emblematic pieces at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. It stands over 9 meters tall and depicts a long-legged spider holding a sac of marble eggs under its abdomen. The piece was created in 1999 as part of a series of works dedicated to the artist's mother.
Bourgeois saw her mother, a tapestry restorer, as a weaver and protector, much like a spider. The sculpture, therefore, symbolizes the strength, intelligence, and protective instinct of motherhood. Despite its imposing size and the fear many people have of spiders, the work conveys a sense of refuge and security. Maman is a monumental piece that challenges the viewer's perceptions and pays an emotional tribute to the maternal figure.
ChĂąteau Laurier was named in honour of Sir Wilfrid Laurier who served as the Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911. This four-star hotel located next to Parliament Hill and the Ottawa Locks with a great view of the Rideau Canal (the longest-skating rink in the world), was inaugurated in 1912. Charles Melville Hays, president of Grand Trunk Railways, commissioned this castle-style hotel in tandem with Ottawaâs downtown Union Station (now temporarily the Senate of Canada building) across the street. The hotel was to be opened on April 26, 1942, but Hays, who was returning to Canada for the hotel opening, perished aboard the RMS Titanic when it sank on April 15, 1912. The Grand Trunk officials held a more modest opening ceremony with Sir Wilfrid Laurier in attendance on June 12th. This landmark hotel was designated a national historic site in 1980. The Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica is the largest and oldest Catholic church in Ottawa and the center of its archdiocese. Located directly across from the National Gallery of Canada, its construction began in 1841 and was completed in 1865. Its original neoclassical style was later complemented by an impressive neo-Gothic facade.
The basilica's interior is particularly notable for its two silver spires, the intricate wood carvings by sculptor Philippe Parizeau, and its stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The church has been visited by significant figures, including royalty, and is both a spiritual and architectural landmark in the city. In addition to its religious role, it is a historic site that attracts thousands of tourists every year.

The Reconciliation monument, commonly known as the Peacekeeping Monument, is a tribute to Canada's role in international peacekeeping operations. Unveiled in 1992, it is the only monument of its kind in the world dedicated to peacekeepers, both living and deceased. The design is a collaboration between sculptor Jack K. Harman and architects Richard G. Henriquez and Cornelia H. Oberlander.
The work features three bronze figures (two men and one woman) representing Canadian peacekeepers. They stand on two stone walls that cut through rubble symbolizing the destruction of war. These walls rise and meet at a high point, symbolizing the resolution of conflicts and peace. The monument is in a prominent location near the National Gallery, and a quote from former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson on the base underlines Canada's commitment to global peace.

The West Block is one of the three buildings that form the heart of Canada's Parliament in Ottawa. Built in the mid-19th century, just like its neighbor, the East Block, it features a Victorian Gothic architectural style with its characteristic towers, pinnacles, and sandstone masonry. Originally, the building served as offices and chambers for the Senate.
Since the completion of a massive rehabilitation project in 2018, the building has become a modern and functional space while maintaining its historical integrity. Currently, the West Block temporarily houses the Canadian House of Commons while the Centre Block is being restored. In addition to being a center for legislative activity, it is one of the most significant landmarks in Ottawa and the country.
Ottawa, CANADĂ 2024.
The East Block is one of the three historic buildings on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and one of the oldest in the complex to have survived almost entirely intact since its construction. Completed in 1866, it is a magnificent example of the High Victorian Gothic Revival architectural style, with its asymmetrical towers and sandstone masonry. It was designed by architects Thomas Stent and Augustus Laver.
Historically, the East Block housed the offices of early prime ministers and other key government figures, such as Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister. Its heritage rooms, including the former Privy Council office, have been restored to reflect the Confederation era. Today, the building still contains senators' offices, but it also offers guided tours that allow the public to immerse themselves in the country's political history.

The War of 1812 Monument is a tribute to Canada's role in this nation-defining conflict. Located at the southwest corner of Parliament Hill, it was unveiled in 2014 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the war between the United States and Great Britain. This monument honors the numerous Indigenous nations, British forces, Canadian military personnel, and militia who defended Canada.
The design by Canadian sculptor Adrian D'O'Grady is a symbolic representation of the different groups who participated in the war. The monument features a series of bronze figures representing the main combatants: a First Nations warrior, a British soldier, a Canadian militiaman, and a woman symbolizing the role of family and nation. The monument serves as a powerful reminder of Canada's history and resilience.
