Craftsman making a wooden doll, "kokeshi", in Naruko village in Miyagi prefecture, Japan, also known for its hot springs.
It is said that these figurines were originally made from scrap wood and were intended for the children of craftsmen's families. These craftsmen, called "kijishi", "kijiya" or "rokuroshi" in Japan, whose lifestyle was determined by the availability of materials, have contributed to Japanese folklore. In reality, a whole range of craftsmen, woodcutters and lacquerers were working with wood until the end of the 19th century. Nowadays, these craftsmen pass on the ideas that folklorists and legends may have conveyed, in an effort to attract tourists.
I'm off to Japan this week. I guess I should have finished uploading my photos from last time before I went again, huh?
This guy was just chilling on a bench near the caves around Aokigahara feeding the birds.
Other than Tokyo - On the agenda this year, Tashirojima, Sendai, Naruko and Yamadera.

See you soon, Japan!
