Goodbye to Angela Merkle 16 years is a long time to be a leader of a major country . While I am not necessarily a supporter of all her policies. It was refreshing to have a leader who was not a narcissistic man-child , and who did not constantly resort to lying. She took her defeat in the election with grace and dignity . So picked up a car from Milan after a long (ca 3 hour) train ride from Roma Termini ('luckily' neither of us had done much research on Italy before landing, so the boy had plenty to read up on while I got motion sickness from trying to read on the train - so we both had plenty to occupy ourselves with).

The wait at the Milano CE Europcar was almost as expected, if the last European trip we had was any indication (waiting for ca 1.5 hours while the boy negotiated with a flurry of hand waving and arm gestures) - the whimsical but repetitive music from the toys being pushed by vendors at the the CE entrance.. well.. echoed in my head for the rest of this Italian odyssey..

He had hoped to surprise me by tooling around Italy in an SLK (well maybe that's a little narcissistic), but the goodfolks at Europcar in their wisdom decided to 'do us a favour' by giving us a 4WD Fiat. It proved to be a great thing later on.

The boy had decided on the last minute that we should visit Sirmione

Even nature seemed to want to show it's solidarity with the Ukrainian people yesterday . I was walking on the cliffs at Flamborough yesterday and the combination of the blue sky and the yellow gorse was striking and poignant .

I cannot even contemplate the courage it must take to stand and fight against an enemy much larger and more powerful than you.Very little good will come from this obscene carnage. What Putin is doing in Ukraine is criminal but he has also treated his own people appalling for years. My only hope it will make people realise that democracy is precious and needs to be defended . Whether it comes under attack by means of arms or by corrupt narcissistic politicians who want to undermine it to increase their own power.

Or too much southern light in winter? This is a larger-than-usual seed pod on a cyclamen plant. It grew so large and heavy that my green-thumbed husband propped it on a pineapple husk. The pod measures about 2cm/ .75 in, roughly, in case you’re curious.

The pod is the fruit from which sticky seeds emerge. Usually. Who knows in this case?

The White-vented Plumeleteer sounds like a character from a Jane Austen spin-off. You half expect him to arrive by carriage, bow deeply, and challenge another hummingbird to a duel over nectar rights.

But no. He’s just a hummingbird.

A very shiny, very fast, mildly narcissistic hummingbird.

This one was caught mid-flight, lapping delicately from a Golden Shrimp Plant—which is neither shrimp nor gold, but still manages to look like a cocktail garnish that wandered into a jungle.

He hovered with the poise of a helicopter in a tuxedo—perfect form, no turbulence, and just enough flair to suggest he checks his reflection in water droplets.

Note: I can completely freeze a hummingbird’s wings using a multi-flash setup. Or I can let in some motion—just a hint of blur at 1/5000 second, but at 1/1000, the blur is significant. Each approach has its magic. Sometimes, blur is your friend.

If you like Mute Swans get yourself to Abbotsbury they have rather a lot

Abbotsbury Swannery is the only managed colony of nesting mute swans in the world. It is situated near the village of Abbotsbury in Dorset, England, around the Fleet Lagoon. The Fleet, besides which the swannery sits, is the largest lagoon in Europe, and runs for about 8 miles along the Dorset coast. It is brackish and tidal, but sheltered by Chesil Beach, and is a RAMSAR site of international importance and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and has been a nature reserve since as early as 1393. The swannery is at its westerly extremity.

The colony can number over 600 swans with around 150 pairs. Written records of the swannery's existence go back to 1393 but it probably existed well before that, and is believed to have been set up by Benedictine monks in the eleventh century.

Today, there are around 600 swans. They are free-flying birds and could choose to nest anywhere, but are obviously attracted by the Fleet Lagoon. Visitors can wander on small paths among the various nests, sometimes experiencing the birds' territorial displays. The swannery is open to the public between March and the end of October,

I found this quote today and it really spoke to me. I often question if I am doing anything to contribute to the world and make it a better place in some minuscule way.
