My preserved specimens have got to go back to their owner so this is one last play. At least the shed won't stink of napthol but they have been fun.
Colored pencil and acrylic paint on paper.
About 3 hours so far.
Directly from shadows.
Limited palette: diarylide yellow, napthol red light, cobalt blue and titanium white only in the areas I'm unsuccessfully painting back out here - I've ended making this into a mixture of paper cut and painting because it was impossible to get back to the paper color with paint... It's very unusual for me not to use lots of white. More posts on this soon.

COLEUS LEAVES..2ND EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING
I used the same technique as yesterdays Painting, but this time I used 3 colors of Liquitex Acrylic Inks...Magenta, Prussian Blue, and Napthol Crimson...and then I added some touches of White Ink, and Acrylic Paint....on Gesso....Plus there are tiny bits of the REAL coleus leaves left in this one... Love working with Nature!
I bought myself a kids set of paints (Reeves I'm pretty sure), just because i HAD to have that long red pretty tin. At first i liked that there were no hinges and I held the top lid in my hand, seemed good. Then I tired of that and used my paper tape to hinge them and now i LOVE it. This sits on my coffee table and gets used all day, everytime i take a break from work and need to chill......i paint. This and my india ink, and I'm in bliss!
From left I included the following pigments:
titanium white
lemon yellow
azo yellow
cad orange
napthol red
alizarin crimson
phthalo blue
ultramarine blue
burnt sienna
neutral grey, i think (schmincke)
bottom row of half pans:
golden ochre (schmincke)
opera (winsor newton)
quin rose
cadmium green light
silver (holbein)
gold (holbein)
All gouache is M Graham unless otherwise noted.

I put this together after my friend Nancy gave me an empty little tin on our way back from the Camille Pisarro exhibit at the Legion of Honor. Awesome!
I was so surprised that this little tin held 9, count that NINE, half pans. The tin measures a whopping 2-1/4″ square, and 7/8″ tall.
I added the following watercolors (out of gouache!) from top left corner going counter clockwise, my favorite nine:
azo yellow
yellow ochre
napthol red
alizarin crimson
ultramarine blue
phthalo blue
viridian
burnt sienna at top
titanium white in center…..remember, I’m a gouache gal, so i’ve got to have my white.
Bought a new waterbrush, and I tell you I am NOT a fan of waterbrushes, but for a tiny portable set they can’t be beat. I mean, I can paint ANYWHERE…I’ve even sketched while going thru a carwash…they do take awhile after all. LOL.
The notebook is not really great for water, but I just love the size and the metallic holder flap whatever it’s called. Wish an art journal had that feature. I also take my Lamy Safari with me in this set, forgot to photograph it. I am set!
NOTE: I cut out two pieces of cardboard the size of the tin (too deep otherwise) and put those in bottom of tin FIRST, then painted some gel medium on top of that, placed my pans on it, and voila, perfection!

Lesson 3: Paint another color grid as in Lesson 1, but use just one color plus black and white. Use a few bits of paper from your color stash if you like.
Tints and shades of Napthol Red Medium.
Trusmi Batik Cirebon recognized by two types of color that comes from the manufacturers, the German-made color (named it, sol formula) and artificial colors or famous Japanese with Jawo formula and napthol. Both these colors using a mixture of water as the diluent.
The Napthol Red Medium is a perfect basecoat, and although you can't see it due to my desk lamp, it needs a brighter red shaded onto it to get that glossy letterbox red

First of four weekly attempts at color palette in acrylic paint.
This is simply raw colour from tubes I possess, with some tints.
Next week involves some colour mixing involves the cools, then the warms, then the earths.
Still differentiating between my napthols and my phthalos and adjusting to the fact that colours have different names depending on the medium: watercolor, acrylic, oils.
