On a recent trip to Japan, I had been looking forward to one image more than any other, the Cherry Blossoms in the Nakameguro River. We had scheduled the trip during cherry blossom season, knowing full well they are fickle and unpredictable. But when you have to schedule hotels, rental cars, reservations and all that goes with international travel, you kind of have to guess and pray.
We scheduled the trip to start in Tokyo and then end with a few days in Tokyo again at the end. Sure enough, the first pass in Tokyo gave us nothing. Some plumb tree blossoms, but no cherry trees. The second pass at the end though, there were enough blossoms to give us photos, but they were still early in their blossoms.
Boy, if you have not been to this place during the festival, its a zoo. They have one-way walking paths, all the areas that you could sit and enjoy the blossoms are roped off. No stopping, no enjoying, and certainly no picnics.
When we first arrived I was instantly heart broken because the first bridge we came to had guards that would not let you stop walking, and caution tape strung across the view, on poles so you could not even look at the river. That seemed overly strict! However, down the channel more they had open bridges where you could stop and loo, no caution tape. They were still lined with guards and tripods were not allowed. Stopping was still technically not allowed, but they were more lax about enforcing that on these bridges. Oh, and, it was raining. Fairly good and hard too. We did have one 20 minute period where the rain stopped enough to get some images in. And the bridge was sturdy enough to use the railing as a makeshift tripod, so that let us use some slower shutters, thank goodness.
I walked away with several keepers form this excursion. It was hard to pick my favorite, but I thought I would lead with what I thought was the best one. Its hard because you want to be dead center, but you also want a building to be in the background. You can't have both though. So this was a bit of a compromise. Very minimal edits on this, I wanted to keep it like I saw it.
Let me know what you think. This may be the best image I got form Japan, but I am still going through the other images too. We will see.
