Possibly mid-to-late 1980s days sees an afternoon Exeter route service westward arrive at Basingstoke with a Class 33/1 locomotive 6532 alias 33114.

Taking a look at lineside debris etc this spot in earlier days compared with a visit this week. Quite charming here!

1990s

47581 Great Eastern has the road away from Ely, the mechanical signaling in the area was in its death throes with much rationalisation already having taken place. No idea what the working was but having had 86233 south from Norwich to Ipswich that morning we seem to have come across the Duff and jumped on to here where we bailed for a few shots prior to downgrading to 156414 to Peterborough

Memories of the fine art of Vac bashing

Between 1983 and 1991 I spent many, many happy hours with my friends riding the rails behind the mighty 'Hoovers' or Class 50s. As well as enjoying the thrash, I managed to record many of the trips and railway scenes encountered on film for posterity. Those days are now long gone, but happily the photos remain for me to reminisce over and share ;)

Seen in the original version of Network SouthEast (NSE) livery, with the attractive white windows, 50034 'Furious' arrives at Leamington Spa on the morning 1M20 Paddington - New Street service. I was none too pleased as this was the one Vac that I didn't want for any more mileage!

For some reason '34 was my least favourite Class 50 - it seemed to follow me everywhere. The locomotive never made it into preservation, and was cut up in 1991 by Coopers Metals at Old Oak Common shed.

D434 entered service 27-Jul-68

Renumbered 50034 in 1974

Cut up by Coopers Metals at Old Oak Common in February 1991 along with 50005, 50009, 50032

50034 'Furious' was a relatively early casualty, becoming the fifteenth Class 50 to be withdrawn, on 04 June 1990 after 22 years of service. The locomotive languished at Old Oak Common for a while, before being broken up on site by Coopers Metals in 1991 - one of eleven Class 50s to end their days on Old Oak Common shed.

Network South East 319176 arrives into East Croydon station with a Bedford - Brighton service July 1993.

Later renumbered 319376 in the Northern fleet I photographed it several times, currently at Long Marston awaiting scrapping.

NSE liveried 50028 'Tiger' had worked this train of discharged ballast hoppers through from Ponsandane, Cornwall when recorded arriving at Tavistock Junction in July 1989. The train would be recessed here pending later onward movement to Meldon Quarry for reloading.
