NS 282 at Springdale, Ohio on February 26, 2022

With the last good pocket of light lighting up the nose, NS 282 finally proceeds north after getting a new crew & route with the Atlanta skyline providing for an okay backdrop. Leading 282 is NS 4001, one of the companies very first DC-to-AC traction conversion rebuilds, which sports a blue & grey commemorative paint scheme dubbed the “Sonic Bonnet” scheme by railfans. 2-7-21

NS 282 begins to accelerate out of Jenkinsburg after letting 372 take the siding. Leading is Sonic Bonnet 4001, one of the first two DC-to-AC conversions that NS completed to extend the life of their older locomotives, hence the special paint scheme that it wears. The 4001 was also famous for being involved in a wreck in 2017 that resulted in the locomotive landing on its side. The engine was eventually rebuilt by the Juniata Locomotive Shops in Altoona, PA in 2020 & it has been running ever since. 2-7-21

A recent Dash 9 rebuild is still looking fairly clean as it heads up hot UPS traffic thru Austell on 282. Off in the distance is the headlight of Birmingham-bound manifest 153, waiting for traffic to clear before hanging a left onto the East End District.

In the late evening light, the NS Penn Central heritage unit leads the NS 282 container train west down the old former Pennsy main line at Arcola, Indiana.

It has been nearly four decades since I've last seen the Penn Central logo run down the old Pennsylvania Railroad, now the CF&E.

NS 282 snakes into Valparaiso, IN with the Reading Heritage Unit on point.

A fortuitous deluge allows NS282 to leave a reflection in the stagnant pool of water at milepost 138. The manhole cover and pond scum also add foreground interest. If you believe all that I have some swampland to sell!!!

NS 282 thunders upgrade toward the summit of Braswell Mountain behind NS 1071 "New Jersey Central" heritage unit.

NS 282 is outbound from Atlanta, Georgia at CP Jackmac with some NS motors on the head end.

While 282 rolls north, 223 waits for them to clear the single track main half a mile ahead of them so they can work Whitaker yard. 3-1-20

Sun goes down with no train, so I head home, pass him, hang the MOST illegal U-turn back to Green. With about 90 seconds to deploy flashes, I get three up before NS 282 rounds the corner at CP Green.

With the NS 1074 DLW heritage in the lead, NS 282 sprints north after meeting NS 177 at CP Foss, the north end of NS Whitaker Yard.

NS 282 is sprinting north on a beautiful fall afternoon behind a pair of Union Pacific motors in Seney, Georgia.

Running unusually late for a hot pig train, NS 282 sprints toward Chicago with a nice crew.

Thundering northbound at a whopping 25 mph, due to numerous slow orders, NS 282 (Jacksonville, FL - Chicago, IL) moves through Seney, Georgia behind two company Dash 9s with the most standard train in tow. Normal to the 9s (pun inteneded).

"Take a picture, because it won't happen again". I'd be willing to bet that if this did happen again it won't be anytime soon. Rounding the elevated curve into downtown Hiram, Georgia NS 282 (Jacksonville, Florida - Chicago, Illinois) Is running every bit of the 50 mile per hour track speed allowed. The Iowa, Chicago and Eastern SD40-2 and Canadian Pacific SD60 were very popular back in 2014 as the train sprinted north from working Whitaker Yard, Austell.

With the day well into the upper 90s, last catch of NS 282 would be here at South Main St in Dallas, Ga. The sun finally worked with me this time.
