Un luogo dove apparentemente non c'è nulla e che invece rivela una vita inaspettata. I deserti che ho visitato mi hanno sempre affascinato, il Namib in modo particolare.
"Gramofon Baba", as most people call Mehmet Usta without knowing his real name, has been producing and fixing gramaphoes since the 40’s and he is a real gramophone lover with 56 gramphones and more than 2000 gramaphone records.
I took a trip down memory lane yesterday. My family booked me onto a Pullman journey down to the West Country and back hauled by the glorious 'Union of South Africa' steam locomotive in celebration of my becoming an octogenerian. This fantastic piece of engineering was built in 1937, the year of my birth so we were both celebrating our 80th year on this planet. I'm not a loco nerd but I couldn't help but be exhilerated and enthralled by the whole experience. The day started on board at Paddington station with a champagne breakfast, lunch in Weymouth followed by a stroll down the promenade, and then back on board for an excellent dinner and return to Paddington. It was indulgent nostagia for which I make no excuse.
