Although they are usually called a Cougar, a Mountain Lion or a Panther, they are also often referred to as Painter, Deer Tiger and Catamount, depending on your geographic location. The Cougar has forty recognized names in the English language as well as at least twenty-five native North American names and eighteen South American names. All of which just goes to show how important scientific names are when referring to a species of animal. Like all other animals the Puma has only one scientific name (although this name may be changed to reflect our increasing scientific knowledge). Currently the Puma is Puma concolor (it was Felis concolor but this name is not now correct as the Puma is no longer considered to be a member of the genus Felis.)

For animals that hunt at night an enhanced sense of touch is obviously useful and for cats this is supplied by special sensitive hairs called vibrissae by scientists, but otherwise commonly known as whiskers. Vibrissae are extremely sensitive to touch and can tell the cat about even small changes in air movement around it. Being longer than ordinary hairs they are the first part of a cat to touch the world and they therefore allow a cat to move around in complete darkness without bumping into things.

Felines, with the notable exception of lions and to a lesser extent domestic cats, are habitually solitary, however they are sometimes are found in pairs (either m/m, f/f or m/f) or larger groups consisting of a single adult female and her immature young. Three quarters of cat species live in forests and many prefer a dense undergrowth that helps them approach their prey unseen.

About a month ago, while our friends Atsuko and Yasushi were visiting us here in Turks and Caicos Islands, I took this photo while we were taking a walk around Northwest Point.

a Northwest native...

I put together a calendar of this year's night photos. It was fun to look back on an eventful year of shooting in the dark. www.lulu.com/shop/craig-goodwin/northwest-nights-2016-cal...

A northwest scenic view into Larimer County and Fort Collins Colorado as the sun is setting and a severe lightning thunderstorm comes over the front range of the rocky mountains and into the plains putting on a nice colorful electric show. Check out the time lapse that goes with this image.

Daryl Hunters ~ The Hole Picture

These are raptors living at the Pacific Northwest Raptor Centre in Duncan, British Columbia. While visiting friends in Chemainus we went to this facility and took in the flight show. It was quite spectacular. The star of the flight show that day was "Arcticus" the Great Horned Owl. Even though we were warned not to move or put our hands up, we were not prepared for the sudden entrance of this Owl who is trained to fly low through the rows of seats. I wish I could have got a sharper shot, but you can get the idea.

Other star performers included the Ferruginous Hawk shown in the mosaic, a Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, and a Peregrine Falcon. The eastern race Gryfalcon was in an enclosure.

"Pergamon (/ˈpɜːrɡəmən/ or /ˈpɜːrɡəmɒn/), Pergamos or Pergamum (/ˈpɜːrɡəməm/) (Ancient Greek: τὸ Πέργαμον or ἡ Πέργαμος), was a rich and powerful ancient Greek city in Aeolis. It is located 26 kilometres (16 mi) from the modern coastline of the Aegean Sea on a promontory on the north side of the river Caicus (modern-day Bakırçay) and northwest of the modern city of Bergama." The view from up on the Big Sur cliffs. There are five or more whales out there near the horizon, breaching, spyhopping, certainly feeding. Odd weather - quite tropical. Offshore water temperatures are about ten degrees higher than normal for this time of year, perhaps a harbinger of a coming warm wet winter.

Yurts in the Washington State Parks System.

Yurts and cabins

Renting a yurt or cabin is an affordable and convenient way to vacation at a Washington state park. Yurts and cabins provide the basic comforts of heating, electricity and furnishings that allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature year round without "roughing it." And the price per night for up to six people is as low as $23.

Yurts

These circular, domed tents are made of extra-heavy, durable canvas and have spacious interiors with skylights, screened windows, hardwood floors and locking doors. Traditionally, yurts served as strong shelters for nomadics in Asia. Yurts sleep up to six people.

As the WP's Reno Branch climbs out of town, a wide open yard space marks the former location of their Parr's Trailer Ramp facility. As hard as it is to imagine today, the WP was running trailer trains out of this location, which on this day finds the lowly local passing a mow gondola where TOFC flats used to be loaded.
