On a nice fine day, in the wild Glensolan valley, a rain cloud suddenly sweeps across the mountain and in a matter of minutes the temperature drops.Visibility goes down to 10 yards and heavy rain blankets the entire area.Within 10 minutes, it has stopped and the sun appears again. I often get caught in such sudden storms so its important to always be prepared.There is nowhere to shelter out here and somtimes the rain comes in so fast that you dont get enough time to put on wet gear. I always bring a small fold up umbrella and its saved me a drenching on a good few occasions! Even with all the necessary gear, in places like this, its very easy slip or fall and break your ankle but its a chance you have to take if you want to visit these out of the way places.Totally mad really!!!
I often ask myself what draws me to them. I dont do it as a challenge like lots of orienteers do and I dont set myself a time limit, though its necessary to get back down before dark. Its nothing like that. I just find myself drawn to the wildness and the isolation, as for me they have a unique beauty all of their own.It makes me realise that up here, I am nothing compares to these mountains.A great leveller! Ive never met anyone else in this place so its wonderful that I can get photos that others dont.
Im lucky to be still able to go to these places at my age so Ill keep going while Im able.I suppose if I stop, Ill probably just corrode!!!! Im very lucky really and I know it!
The power of nature never ceases to astound me and even mankind with all our intelligence and expertise cant control or predict what it will do next!!! Nobody knows and I like that!
