A panoramic view of High Cup Nick in the North Pennines.

It looks quite warm here, but the temperature was hovering around zero degrees all day and was quite bracing!

Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets

Ulster Hall 14 April 2022

I was really pumped to get out and shoot some cars this weekend. My weekend goal was to do at least one car session, and document it for hopes of blogging it later.

This was the first shoot of the weekend and one of the most fun rig sessions I have done in a while.

It was also frustrating at times; I underestimated just how busy it would be down this back alley in the heart of Regina's downtown district.

We had to take off the boom once and direct several other cars around our area.

Before long, we were able to get the shots we wanted and move on.

I love the brick along the left side of the frame, it creates those strong parallel lines and the angle is just wide enough to get some of the buildings on the other side of the frame to get that balance and draw the eye back through the rest of the image.

The Nick Schnebelen Band, Sparky's, Hatch, New Mexico, March 15, 2017

The late afternoon sun casting a beautiful soft light across the Yorkshire Dales viewed from Scarth Nick.

Street Musician

Not the most obvious view of a musician but I liked the sculptural shape of the bass player and the textures under the stage light.

Simple editing. I love this. Frankie is too adorable. You too Nick. Comment if you use, or favorite this please :)

Nick Owen and I have been friends for more than 60 years, which seems almost impossible to imagine. We met at secondary school in Banstead, Surrey, when we were young teenagers in the late 1950s, and we’ve kept in touch ever since.

After leaving school, we separately entered the world of media, which served us both well from day one to retirement. Our paths were slightly different – me ‘backroom’ (newspaper reporter, television producer, editor) and Nick ‘front of camera’ (ITN reporter, Royal correspondent, Channel 4 and BBC newscaster, and then radio presenter). But throughout all that time we stayed in touch, as we still do.

These days, in retirement, we meet several times a year for a thoroughly enjoyable catch-up lunch – and that, I’m happy to say, will be the order of the day until one of us drops. But neither of us is planning on that for a long time to come.

I took this photograph of Nick in Banstead a few weeks ago, on our way to our latest convivial lunch.

Don't Copy, Please Ask!

All the local National Trust properties here in Hampshire have now announced and started their programme of Christmas displays. We visited Hinton Ampner which is largely the creation of one man, Ralph Dutton, and his vision of a fine country house with comfortable Georgian living.

He once kept a copy of Aesop's Fables classic tales in his library and this year's Christmas theme is inspired by these stories.

We had a look around the rooms in the house; I took a few photos.

As we left we were recommended to visit the old-fashioned sweet shop, which we did. Two cheerful volunteers were on duty and I found myself asking the lady who served Ray (buying chocolate brazils) if she would participate in my portrait project. Meet Juliet, who willingly agreed.

She has worked as a volunteer at Hinton Ampner for 13 years as a room guide and her professional training as a florist is evident in the Christmas decorations. This year she is responsible for the study depicting the fable of the goose who laid the golden eggs. A total of eight ladies have worked on the rooms.

During the course of conversation I discovered that the gentleman volunteer working with Juliet in the sweet shop is her husband, Nick, who is also a garden volunteer. I requested a joint photo and made a note to send Juliet and Nick some shots.

Thanks to both of them for indulging me and I wish them a Happy Christmas. I hope the rest of the Christmas opening goes really well.
