The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, close to Deneb. The nebula was discovered by William Herschel in 1786 and its shape is vaguely visible under dark, transparent skies with the help of a nebula filter. However, the distinctive reddish color, due to hydrogen atoms emission and its prominent shape show up in photographs of the area, which is incredibly rich in hydrogen-alpha emission nebulosity (the nebulosity visible at lower left is part of the adjacent Pelican Nebula, IC 5070).

Interstellar dust between the nebula and the Earth absorbs some of the light of the nebula and is therefore responsible for the shape of the nebula that resembles that of North America. Images from Spitzer Space Telescope in the infrared have revealed that young, massive stars are hidden behind the dark dust clouds that form the "Gulf of Mexico" area and might be responsible for the radiation that excites the hydrogen atoms and makes the nebula to glow.

The distance to the nebula is estimated to be about 1800 light years and its diameter about 100 light years.

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000 or Caldwell 20) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. The remarkable shape of the emission nebula resembles that of the continent of North America, complete with a prominent Gulf of Mexico. The North America Nebula is large, covering an area of more than four times the size of the full moon; but its surface brightness is low, so normally it cannot be seen with the unaided eye. The North America Nebula and the nearby Pelican Nebula, (IC 5070) are in fact parts of the same interstellar cloud of ionized hydrogen. The distance of the nebula complex is though to be approx 1800 light years away.

The Cygnus Wall complex is part of the more recognisable North American nebula.

This ridge is approximately 20 light years long and is a huge star forming region.

You can see where it is in a larger picture on the following link www.swagastro.com/the-cygnus-wall-complex.html

This is a 4 pane mosaic as the field of view was too small to fit in the Cygnus Wall itself.

North American Nebula (NGC7000): A hydrogen and dust cloud located in the constellation Cygnus which you can see rising in the east in summer to fall. Cygnus is sometimes called the Northern Cross and has the very bright star Deneb as the head of the cross. (Deneb, Vega and Altair make up the Summer Triangle). NCG7000 vaguely resembles the outline of the North American continent.

IC5070 or the Pelican Nebula is an H II region located near the North America Nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. The gaseous clouds of this emission nebula resemble a pelican, giving rise to its name.

This photo was done using the HST or Hubble Space Telescope Palette (sometimes called SHO: SII = red, Ha= green, OII = blue) which is accomplished by combining sub frames using three narrowband filters that capture light produced by glowing hydrogen (Ha), oxygen (OIII) and sulfur (SII) present in the nebula. Green is assigned to hydrogen, blue to oxygen and red to the sulfur.

Note: this is the first photo I have done with the KAF-16200 based, Starlight Xpress SX-46, so I picked low hanging fruit! This full frame chip also allowed me to get both nebulae into the same shot without using a mosaic or a very wide angle camera lens.

Object: The Cygnus Wall in NGC7000 (SHO Palette) (Aug. 2025)

The Cygnus Wall or The Great Wall in Cygnus is the term for a structure in the North American Nebula (NGC7000) that comprise of prominent, bright ridge within the larger nebula. This area of the nebula exhibits the most concentrated star formation area in the complex of ionized gas and is located about 1600 to 1800 light-years away from Earth. The structure is a shock front surrounded by dark gas and dust in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan.

.....................

Cygnus Wall is the most visible and interesting part of the well-known North America nebula, located 1500 light-years from us, in the constellation Cygnus. The "wall" is actually an area of stellar dust combined with hydrogen ionized by the radiation of young stars and stretches over a length of about 20 light-years, thus being one of the largest and best known stellar "nurseries".
