Edited European Southern Observatory image of the edge-on galaxy NGC 1055. (I lost my original image so all images are color/processing variants).
This colourful image from ESO’s Very Large Telescope shows NGC 1055 in the constellation of Cetus (The Sea Monster). This large galaxy is thought to be up to 15 percent larger in diameter than the Milky Way. NGC 1055 appears to lack the whirling arms characteristic of a spiral, as it is seen edge-on. However, it displays odd twists in its structure that were probably caused by an interaction with a large neighbouring galaxy.

NGC1055 - 11/27/2010 - Suffolk, VA
Camera: Orion Star Shoot DSI II
Scope: Astro-Tech 66 ED
Focal Length: 400mm
Mount: Celestron AS-CG5 GOTO
Exposures: 15 x 2 minute
Guided: Yes - Celestron C6-SGT/Orion Starshoot Autoguider/PHD
Stacked with DeepSky Stacker 3.3.2
I am not very happy with this one. Had over 90 minutes of exposures but only 30 minutes of them (15 x 2 minutes) were good enough to stack. Had a terrible time guiding. Not sure if my polar alignment was not good enough, or if the mount was off balance, or it may be that this object is beyond the limits of my equipment. I will give it another try on another night.
Gostei bastante desses objetos! Bastantes detalhes interessantes. NGC 1055 and NGC 1068 (Messier 77), are two spiral galaxies, one of them barred. In here we see how the position in relation to us can affect our understanding about the object. One of them looks like a bar to us because we see it laterally and the other we see its full disc. Located at Cetus constellation. I really like this object! We can see many interesting details. M77 and NGC1055 on 12/2/2018 8 days after Supernova 2018ivc was first noticed. The supernova in M77 on the left may be visible in the pic. NGC1055 edge-on spiral galaxy on the right. Taken from Austin, Texas with MallinCam DS16c on C9.25" with HyperStar. 10 or 15 second exposures stacked up to 30 times live for a total of about 10 minutes data. Then 4 images were averaged in Photoshop.
The Squid Galaxy in the centre of this picture is also known as Messier 77 (M77), Cetus A. It is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Cetus 47 million light years away.
Up in the top left of the picture you can see another barred spiral galaxy, NGC 1055. This galaxy is 63 million light years away.
Image taken on 9 October 2023.
