The building of Science World was constructed for Expo 86, becoming the Expo Centre when the fair opened. During the world's fair, the pavillion housed the Future Theatre, a theatre with push-button voting.

The Science World "golf ball" is actually a geodesic dome, the design of which was created by American inventor R. Buckminster Fuller . He spent his life working across multiple fields, such as architecture, design, geometry, engineering, science, cartography and education, in his pursuit to make the world work for 100% of humanity.

In the background the BC Place Stadium , home field for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer. It was the Olympic Stadium during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

This is a vintage crane at the Historic Dockyard Chatham in Kent, England. Chatham Dockyard was a Royal Navy Dockyard established in the mid-16th century. It played a crucial role in British naval history for centuries. The cranes at the dockyard were built by Grafton Cranes Ltd in the 1930s and 1940s. They are coal-fired and were used for shipbuilding and heavy lifting tasks. Chatham Dockyard is now a museum and heritage site, showcasing its rich maritime history. Visitors can explore historic ships, buildings, and exhibits, including the HMS Ocelot submarine.

The steam cranes supplied to Chatham Dockyard were “Locomotive Yard Cranes”, these were cranes designed to haul wagons around the dockyard railway system as well as lifting goods as required. The cranes were built by Grafton Cranes Ltd at their Vulcan Works in Bedford, and were delivered to the dockyard in the 1930s and 1940s. The cranes run on a six wheeled carriage, with a coal fired boiler and were designed to work on a pressure of 689 kilopascals. The 30ft (9.144 m) worm-driven jib is driven from the 2-cylinder main engine and is fitted with a single hoist rope, which has a lifting capacity of 5 tons at 7 m or 3 tons at 9 m. There are four ex-dockyard steam cranes on the Historic Dockyard Railway, but works No.2641, built in 1941, Yard No. 558 is currently waiting a decision on restoration.

Grafton Cranes Ltd, also known as Grafton & Co., was established in 1883 by Alexander Grafton. The company, located in Bedford, Bedfordshire, was known for manufacturing steam cranes and rail cranes from the 1800s until the mid-20th century. The main site of Grafton Cranes was the Vulcan Works in Bedford. The company also had offices at 113 Cannon Street, London. Grafton Cranes manufactured cranes for various industrial uses, including docks and wharfs. Their cranes were noted for their engineering and construction machinery. The company contributed significantly to the industrial and engineering landscape. Their cranes were exported worldwide and used in various industries.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham is a maritime museum on part of the site of the former royal/naval dockyard at Chatham in Kent, South East England.

Chatham Dockyard covered 162 hectares and was one of the Royal Navy's main facilities for several hundred years until it was closed in 1984. After closure the dockyard was divided into three sections. The easternmost basin was handed over to Medway Ports and is now a commercial port, although the landowner plans to close it in 2025. Another slice was converted into a mixed commercial, residential and leisure development. 32 hectares, comprising the 18th-century core of the site, was transferred to a charity called the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust and is now open as a visitor attraction. It claims to be the world's most complete dockyard of the age of sail.

this was so cute, this is one of the donkeys at the sanctuary and as it stood in the rain it put his head up right next to this pigeon

the pigeon started side-stepping away from him, but then obviously found it a bit close for comfort and took off! (see below)

...its part of an incomplete series i just started working on... so... hopefully over the next week... more will pop up... :D

The mural is called “Story of My Life” and what the legendary street artist Logan Hicks said about his turn at this famous New York City wall was “Doing a mural on the Houston Bowery Wall is a celebration of my ten year mark in New York.”

The mural captures a street scene in SoHo (Greene Street) from May 22 of this year. Hicks’ friends were invited to partake in a group photo shoot on that day and the photograph then became a series of giant blue-hued stencils. Gothamist explains it further and names names;

“The sprawling, intricate piece is called "Story of My Life," and it depicts what the corner of Spring and Greene Streets would look like if everyone important to Hicks happened to be walking down the same NYC street at the same time. Last spring Hicks had dozens of his friends and fellow artists stroll up and down the SoHo block again and again as he took about a thousand photos, which helped him create a composite sketch.

The faces include Martha Cooper, Chris Stain, Sara and Marc Schiller of the Wooster Collective, Eric Hayes, Rosie Perez, Elbow Toe, Joe Iurato, London Police, and Lori Zimmer, who curated the mural for landlord Goldman Properties. Hicks also put loved ones and close friends in the piece, including his mother and his nine-year-old son, who's depicted three times. There are also random passersby in the scene, people who happened to be in Hick's photos and stood out somehow to the artist.”

If I was a few pounds lighter, well okay a lot of pounds lighter, I’d be a dead ringer for a photographer in the scene. Can you see yourself in this wall?

what would we do without trails?

This shot is inspired by Justin Bua's "DJ" (seen in the background) and the IMBA "What would we do without trails?" print ads. I wanted to incorporate most background elements from Bua's painting but I don't have a shelf full of records so I used the bikes instead. The poster in Bua's work is also one of his paintings, Rising.

The rim light hitting my left hand and turntable was the trickiest part of this shot. In order to do this, the flash needs to be blocked by my right arm, not from behind my back. The flash body and light stand is actually visible in the final shot and I cloned out the red light from the flash trigger.

Strobist info: SB-28dx, 1/1, full cto gel, shoot through umbrella with black cover in the back to control spill, camera left. White foam board reflectors camera left for fill on face and camera right for fill on left arm. SB-24, 1/4, 8in snoot for rim light. 540EZ, 1/2, full cto gel, grid spot, below far turntable lighting the poster in the background. Fired with ebay triggers.

this is the third photo from ‘the sanctuary’ (see last two day’s shots too)

this is a hugely sad story – they have fifteen owls that were pets, but that have had to be re-homed

most of these are because of harry potter!

what sort of parent thinks it is responsible when its kid says ‘i want an owl like harry potter’ - to get it one? !!

these then cant be released into the wild by law – as they are not the same sort as our wild british ones

(you may remember i have ranted about this before on my photo on 10/07/10 !)

these are carron and chum, a couple of the donkeys at ‘the sanctuary’ morpeth

they have a complicated routeen with them as they feed them seperatly from the younger donkeys to ensure they eat enough as the youngsters are quite boisterous – and then one has to be fed on her own as she eats slowly and if they don’t watch her the others finish her food off for her!

bless them they have to cater for so many different needs!

This community garden's website abbreviates the name with "6 & B Garden" but the is a long history of community "grassroots" activism to be found here.

After the city demolished the housing on this site in 1983 the community came together and the seeds were planted. Raised bed gardening took root against Community Boards and City Government looking to sell the property to developers. Increased membership and community activity barely won every battle and in 1996 a deal was worked out by the Trust for Public Land to give the garden permanent site status. No longer a developer's dream, 6 & B now falls under the blanket of the NYC Department of Parks.

There is another little story to be told here. Recognized now by a "wave fence" and an outdoor community stage, this garden was once the home of "The Toy Tower." "Eddie Boros, artist, garden member, and lifelong resident of the East Village (he lived his entire life in an East 5th Street tenement that overlooked the garden), began this sculpture around 1988." It would grow from one garden plot to eight plots and over six stories tall, becoming an East Village icon. Local news reporters would keep track of the artist and the progress of the huge sculpture. Years before being recreated for the set of the Broadway musical "RENT" many would see a happy "Les Misérables" barricade.

Eddie Boros and his Toy Tower are no longer with us. Almost but not quite forgotten, one eccentric East Villager influenced many and there was a PBS documentary of this once famous "garbage art." The tower can also still be seen in the opening credits of reruns for "NYPD Blue" and the memories of older New Yorkers.
