I didn't feel I listened to the minimum amount of new releases required to make a definitive top 10 list. Though, many of the staples I've seen on other year end lists failed to resonate with me: Frank Ocean, Tame Impala, Japandroids albums, even after seeing them all live. So presented here, my top 10 favorite albums of the year:

10. Dr. John - Locked Down

Forged at last year's steamy Superjam at Bonnaroo, Dan Auerbach and Dr. John lay down the grove.

9. Beach House - Bloom

Not quite last year's Teen Dream, but continues a run of perfection.

8. Tennis - Young and Old

Produced by The Black Key's Patrick Carney, my first favorite of 2012 stood the test of time.

7. Gold Motel - Gold Motel

Classic summer album whose breezy tunes brought relief in the midst of a broiling 4th of July heatwave.

6. Divine Fits - A Thing Called Divine Fits

Simple formula. Spoon + Wolf Parade = Divine Fits.

5. Sharon Van Etten - Tramp

This album may have landed higher in play counts had it not inspired me to listen to her previous two albums so much instead.

4. The Shins - Port of Morrow

The lineup perfected, James Mercer sails forth.

3. Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself

Return to form for one of music's most versatile musicians.

2. Jack White - Blunderbuss

Even without Meg, you can't deny Jack White & his seemingly endless bag of tricks.

1. David Byrne & St. Vincent - Love This Giant

I find it shocking Love This Giant has been so overlooked on year end lists, it was an easy #1 pick.

Behind the numbers:

#1-5 were selected editorially, then ranked in order by average plays per song per day since release.

#6-10 were narrowed from a remaining batch of 10 contenders.

Little Impression ...MoonYard .. ..Live at De Hip.. ... Deventer

A revolutionary invention from recent years - the iPod. The first iPod was released in 2001. This one is a Fifth Generation iPod Classic from 2005.

I was wondering what music to have playing on my iPod in the picture, and in the end decided to do a kind of 'sequel' to my earlier shot of David Bowie's new album. Also this suits the theme because Bowie is one of the great musical innovators of recent years.

It's my album of the year for sure and would definitely recommend it if you've liked any of his earlier work, or if you just want to hear some excellent music.

For the 'Invention' weekly theme in the 365 2013 Edition group.
