Ever since high school it was my dream to go to college and become a registered nurse. I graduated nursing school 4 months ago and the one thing that stood in the way of my dream was one test. That one test is the Nclex, the Nclex is a test that every nurse needs to pass so they can get their license to practice as a registered nurse in America. I took that test last Monday and that was one of the reasons why I was gone from flickr. After I took the test I felt like I totally failed and I could not function for the next two days. I was worrying so hard that I had dreams of myself worrying about the test. I woke up Thursday morning and by God's grace I found out that I passed the Nclex. I am now officialy a registered nurse and I can start working. I never thought that my dream would come true because there were many things that stood in my way. However, I put my life in God's hands, continued to work hard and God made my dream into a reality. So happy to be back and I will catch up on your streams.
Beings this isn't the first time I've done this, seems to happen every few months, I'll keep this short and sweet. In 18 weeks I will finally finish my degree program... meaning school is cracking down and I'm entering the prep stages for my nclex.:O!. That being said my little monster is turning 6 in a few days, then Christmas, the new yr, and so many other things my time is better spent on. :)
While I'm not gone MIA like I was last time... you will notice Chary. and noob muncher slowing down quite a bit as I prioritize :)
I wish you all a blessed holiday :)

Why do I want to eventually become a strict vegan?
Two days prior to graduation, I went to Barnes and Noble, only this time, I realized I didn’t have to study for the Boards yet. I've been living in the library that it's second nature just to drive there or at Panera Bread's. I’d forgotten which health magazine boasted the miracles on macrobiotic diet and Gwyneth Paltrow’s magic cleanse. It seemed like an amazing idea to detoxify my body of all the bad habits I’ve developed since nursing school began three years. On I went to the diet section, but someone had left Alicia Silverstone’s book, The Kind Diet, on the step stool, on top of other books awaiting to be re-shelved. I remember thinking, Wow, she wrote a book after Clueless… Then, I looked at the cover and thought Wow, she looks like she hadn’t aged… No, wait… she looks even better I double-taked as I picked up the book.
Hmm… in-te-res-ting… she’s gone vegetarian… Hey, Candi is a vegetarian, right? wait… vegan? dang… wasn’t this on our freaking HESI exam that I got wrong… lacto-ovo versus just ovo… crap… I should read up on that… add to the list to study on NCLEX [thoughts while perusing the pages]
Then, bam… I see an insert of a Mr. Universe a-la Ah-nold Schwarzeeeeenegger picture. Wait… a bodybuilder that’s meat free???? I believe I emailed and added Robert Cheeke on my facebook that instant. teeheeheheheh xD
But, yes, I realized Alicia is right. How can I just accept what is being fed to me? Here I am, working to get my body in its best shape, but I’m putting awfulness in my mouth. It’s not right. How can I justify to my two furr cubbs that their mummy is willing to eat animals???
This is going to be tough. I can feel it. Not the giving up the meat because I saw those youtube vids on how inhumane the living conditions are for those poor animals. I live in Houston, once the fattest city in the US. Even when I lived in Sugar Land, the once fittest city, right next door, it was difficult to find organic and trust-worthy farmers market type establishments. I moved to Cypress because of the trees and to be closer to the forest, but that’s another blog on how they demolished my beautiful backyard to build “luxury apts.” I miss the eagles, bunnies, and deers…. sigh TT^TT.
Kroger and HEB down the street have pretty good choices. Albeit I don’t make enough money at the moment to be spending on organic goods, I’ve made a decision to make an effort.
Dietwise….
No red meat – try to eliminate ALL meat by the end of 2010
No dairy – so far so good… my digestives are thanking me
No coffee – i’ll drink some green tea
No refined, white sugar!!!!
I’ve added goat’s milk… it’s not as easy as I thought it would be. it has a funky taste... LOL
It’s organic and from the local farm.
This was my last night to study for the NCLEX!! I was nervous. Notice the Guacamole cat lounging peacefully in the chair. He is so spoiled.
Your world can change in the blink of an eye.
I'm still here. Been busy studying for the NCLEX (test needed to take to become a registered nurse)
Obviously, I had to keep the trend going - 0.5 camera angle for the win! This selfie was taken in a place I seem to spend a good majority of my time lately - Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Between work and clinical hours for nursing school, I find myself at the hospital three to four days a week for 12 hour shifts. Just like most of my other selfies, if you look close enough, a few of my work friends are featured. This day was seemingly not very busy considering there are three of us in this photo sitting at the nurses station, however, this is rarely the case. The reasoning for this photo was a response to my friends inquiring about why I was unable to go to lunch with a few friends.
A snippet from my first album - the selfie album. I chose this picture because I realized it correlates most to my growth this semester. As I enter my last semester of college, I am also entering my last few months of working as a patient care associate at the hospital. Instead, in a few short months I will graduate with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing, prepare to take the NCLEX, and if all goes as planned, begin my career as a registered nurse. I chose this photo because it encompasses where I am currently - in the hunter green scrubs designated for PCAs, and where I will be soon - in the navy blue scrubs designated for nurses. This semester, I became a better PCA. In a few short months, I will look back and remember how I felt in this moment here reflecting on what I am now and dreaming of how much more I will become.
This semester, I grew.
We’re letting one nurse take over a segment our blog. Wait a minute, why? Well, we want to give you, and other student nurses, an open and honest look at life beyond nursing school. From studying for the NCLEX Exam and passing it to the job hunt and the day-to-day of a new nurse, you will be able to follow the ins and outs, the ups and downs.
Allow us to introduce you to Savanah Case, RN, BSN. You may remember her from our “What End-of-Program Nursing Students Wish They Knew When…” blog series. She was in your shoes not too long ago and is full of stories, advice and tips that you will want to know.
Meet Savanah Case, RN, BSN
Hello all! My name is Savanah Case RN, BSN (those letters still seem surreal to write after my name). I am currently working in the Mother Baby department at Olathe Medical Center’s The Birth Place. I have been done with school for a whole six months now and time has absolutely flown by. It wasn’t until the end of my schooling that I was able to narrow down the areas I hoped to obtain a job in – Mother Baby/Labor and Delivery or Emergency Department. Needless to say, I ended up at The Birth Place and have absolutely loved it for countless reasons.
Throughout the next six months I will share my story and experiences with all of you, but first, I would like to dive into the test everyone begins to think about the minute they find out they have been accepted into nursing school – the NCLEX. Without passing this exam, I wouldn’t be able to do what I love – be a nurse.
End-of-Program Testing and Scheduling the NCLEX Exam
I attended a nursing school that used ATI within our curriculum. So, towards the end of my program we had to take the ATI Comprehensive Predictor, which from my understanding is very comparable to the NCLEX and calculates your probability of passing the NCLEX. The Predictor would be the longest test I had ever taken in my entire life and my ability to take the NCLEX depended on this. Needless to say, this definitely made me nervous.
Once I passed the Predictor I had a big decision to make as to when I wanted to take boards. It’s a dilemma I’m sure all of you will face, and you will probably change your mind at least five times. The minute that you do commit to a date and click that “schedule” button, your mind will start to race.
My advice is go with your gut – if you don’t like to feel rushed, give yourself time, and if you will put off studying if it’s too far out, schedule it soon! By this time in nursing school, you have an idea of how you study and how you work and test “best”. I decided the content was not going to get any fresher in my mind as time went on so I got on the website and booked the soonest NCLEX date I could get – May 9th.
Sidenote: When scheduling your test think about the time of day you would prefer to test/your daily routine. Every morning before class I got up and went running, ate my breakfast and then hit the books – which is why I scheduled my exam for 7:30 AM. Testing at this time allowed me to wake up, get my workout in and eat my breakfast just like I normally would! However, if you’re not a morning person, I wouldn’t suggest testing early in the morning.
Studying for the Exam
So, how did I study? I mainly used two resources for my studying that I purchased on my own. There is no perfect time to study and let’s be honest, no one WANTS to study for the NCLEX but you just have to dive in!
When I Started Studying:Around Christmas time, roughly five months before graduation, I bought the NCLEX RN app for my phone. Slowly, and I mean very slowly, I started taking questions on it. When I say slowly I mean the first two months I was lucky to take 10 questions before I went to bed – but some is better than none, right?
This app has about 1500 questions you can take, and they even will split them into categories (Labs, Med/Surg, Maternity, Psych, Peds, Pharmacology, Fundamentals). On the app it will also show you the time you spend on average answering questions and how many you have gotten right.
How I Prepped:Knowing that my goal was to take the NCLEX in May, I purchased the NCBSN five-week course and started to use it towards the end of April. I liked this option because the people that make the NCLEX make this study tool. Because of time purposes, I stuck to the quiz banks offered on this site and tried to take one full set a day for 10 days straight prior to my test date which was roughly 150-200 questions a day.
Sidenotes: On these quizzes, I got anywhere from 40%-100%. So, don’t get stressed out if you aren’t getting high marks every time!
How Many Hours I Studied: Timewise, I can’t put a number on how many hours I spent studying, but I know it was a lot. I am a “fast test taker” so the time spent was always different. Study until you feel comfortable or until you hit a wall. Once you hit a wall, step away for a bit and come back to it later once you’ve taken some time to relax!
My Best Study Tip:Not knowing how many questions I would have to take during the actual exam, I tried to take as many as possible. When taking questions, I would suggest the “practice like you play” philosophy. (AKA: build your own testing environment). For me, that meant putting my phone away, finding a place where there would be no noise/distractions, no one else around and absolutely no resources! While you’re taking questions keep a blank sheet of paper nearby to write down topics that you might want to look over or review!
SATA Questions: SELECT ALL THAT APPLY. If you don’t already hate seeing this (SATA), you will by the time you finish taking your NCLEX. My biggest suggestion is to get comfortable seeing this next to your questions and take as many as you can! I would say over half of my exam was SATA.
The Final Check: I also ended up taking a practice predictor from the ATI website prior to taking my NCLEX. This helped me to gauge my overall competence level, and it gave me another set of NCLEX-style questions to practice on.
Overall studying wise, I knew that I personally needed to take practice questions, which is why that was more of my studying method. I did review some content, especially if I wrote it down when taking questions. You will constantly feel like you’re not studying enough or you may not feel confident that you’re studying the right way. You will probably never feel that you are “prepared” for this test, but in all reality, you’ve been preparing for two years.
It’s Test Day! The Before, During and After
The day before the test, take it easy and try to relax (HA! Easier said than done, I know). But seriously, try to schedule something fun to take your mind off of it and then get to bed at a decent time. At this point, you just have to accept the fact that you’re nervous. Embrace it!
Testing day – I literally could. not. sleep. all. night. long. I tried my best to sleep, but I think I maybe got three hours, whoops! I had my roommate take me to the test, drop me off and made plans for her to pick me up. This made it easy for me to stay “in the zone” that morning.
During the test, I tried my best to stay calm. There were questions where I had no idea what was being asked and there were questions I knew the answer to almost immediately. While you’re testing, stick to the way you test. If you take your time answering questions, don’t rush into one.
And if you seem to move through questions faster, don’t completely change your style! When my screen went black, (I didn’t believe this actually happened, until it happened to me) I had no clue what to do.
I thought, “That’s it? Am I done? Is this a joke?” And just like that, the waiting game began…..
If I’m being honest, I remember walking out feeling like I was in a daze, almost like I felt nothing, if that makes sense. However, the more I started to think about it, the more confident I felt that I had in fact passed – but I still had no idea. The first 24 hours of the waiting game I felt as good as you can try to feel, but the second 24 hours is when the doubt set in. This is when you start wanting to Google those “tricks” to see if you had passed because you’re too impatient to wait the whole 48 hours. Luckily, I talked myself out of attempting any of those tricks and just kept waiting.
I remember sitting on my bed at 47 hours and 55 minutes watching the clock, and the clock moved slower than ever. Finally, I was able to pay my $7 to receive early results and saw the word “Pass” in really small letters …yes that’s it. Balloons don’t trickle down your screen, the word isn’t in bright colors,“Congratulations!” doesn’t flash across your screen, it just says just “pass”. Nonetheless, I cried tears of joy and screamed so loud people thought I broke my leg.
So that’s it, that’s how I passed the NCLEX in 75 questions. The emotions, the stress, the hard work, and the excitement.

I apologize not being able to update for the past month. Basically i was very stressed out trying to pass my NCLEX exam.
For now, I would like to write my NCLEX journey and hopefully give hope to people who failed at least once just like me.
Im a batch 2009 BSN graduate from Philippines. anyone can count that for sure … thats 8 years out of school…My previous work were all straight Neonatal intensive care unit nurse, no adult experience. I failed nclex once as well last 2015, when i was in UK, i am really unprepared that time.
having said that, the failure was a big hit to my ego. it felt so hard to try one more time. basically, i am scared i will fail again. and i have a hard time finding the courage to take a leap of faith to study because the fear of failing is always higher. i am human after all and my ego has been high eversince i was young hehe.
I left my application unattended because i have to move from UK to USA so that i can be with my now hubby.it means paperwork, making sure i did everything needs to be done in UK so i wont need to come back… But eversince i was in US, this has always been in my head… i need to be an RN – BECAUSE I WANT TO BE ONE. i really cant picture myself being in another job , maybe temporary yes, but not for long.
A lot of people have helped me, even those whom i become friends with here in my blog helped me, giving me reviewers, saunders online questions and LA charity pdf questions… i have read through a lot of individual successes and failures , advices from different people how they passed.
While studying for my NCLEX exam i have so much paperwork needed to be done because i am also applying for nclex california to know what are the subjects i will need to restudy…cgfns ces and lvn application. those were hard to complete as well because i am RN in both Philippines and UK.
I started gaining back the courage to study around October. i have a lot of struggle throughout, naming a few were the name change, visa interview, changing my name and address in NYBON, lets not forget contacting UK was hard too because of time difference…those were just a few.. but i really have a very loving and understanding hubby.
nearing my exam i am very stressed … the pressure was getting to me.. it was my hubby, my family, friends who were always there to listen when i am feeling all the sadness weighed in. i would always test for 100 items , read rationale, then test again another 50-100 items. that's how my days go by . Prayers really move mountains. i would cry while answering when my hubby was at work hehe. just because my scores were not that high. it reach to a point my scores were improving but deep down i dont feel i am improving at all.
Finally the date i scheduled for the exam came. night before i find it so hard to sleep. taking the 2 sleeping gummies helped me to sleep. my hubby drove me to the test site. the exam was really nerve wrecking! each time the computer asked if i want to have a break… i would say YESSSS! When i am outside, i would talk to myself – i can do this… as long as the computer gives me questions, i have a chance to pass! i have 3 breaks if i remember correctly. when i reached 180th question, i knew i was going it for the whole 265 questions maximum. my head was hurting already but i kept praying to God to help me… help me get through, i want to be a RN.
When i reached 264th question… i knew the next one was the last. i prayed hoping its not select all that apply question.but alas! it was a select all that apply! i was tearful, but still gave my best and then the computer stopped.
i was tearful as i went out… but hey i gave my best. i cried when i was in the car on the way home while talking to one of my friends in UK through video chat of how horrible the exam was.
Now i tried the PVT every Filipino is talking about… try to re-register again, put in credit card details, change expiry and the code behind…my result was a bad pop up and i literally cried. i talked to my family through we chat video telling them how hard the exam was and so as my few friends who knew my exam date… well its all left to the 48hrs quick result now. i have to say my hubby has always been the positive one, trying to be strong when i am weak.He knows this exam meant a lot to me.
On wednesday March 15, 2017 , my hubby was very sweet as he told me he will work from home so he can cheer me up if i do fail and be happy with me if i pass. i wasnt aware he got to the results before me, he paid for the quick results and ….i cant believe it, it was a PASS! Since i was thinking i failed all this time … it took a while before it hit me that i passed!
I am now US RN!
All the hardwork and effort paid off.
thank you Lord … You have always been with me… by Your grace I am a RN 2009 (Philippines), 2015 ( UK), 2017 (USA) Thank you to my family, friends, and my hubby for all the support…
finally ! i have climbed a mountain and i know there are more mountains to climb for me, because the road to California RN will take time.. and I'm sure with all the support from people who care and God guiding me along the way, I am sure i will reach it someday.
My message to test takers who are like me… international graduate, 8 years out of school or more … failed at least once… Dont give up! continue working hard and pray!
