In the PNW for a month and a half of atmospheric science research, helping calibrate the GPM satellite's ability measure precipitation from space. Thanks to the #NASASocial program I was able to go on board this airline and science veteran while it is temporarily based at McChord.

Two million pounds of thrust sends the first (unmanned) flight of NASA's newest manned space capsule, Orion, into the heavens.

 

This first flight of Orion was atop the heaviest rocket currently flown in the USA, the Delta IV Heavy, with three Common Booster Cores (CBC) and a cyrogenic upper stage, pushing Orion into a 3,600 mile high orbit before a successful mission completion and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

On Monday, Feb. 10 NASA Goddard invited social media followers to an in-person State of NASA event. The all-day event highlighted Goddard science, engineering, and exploration to our Moon and soon, to Mars. Attendees learned all about Goddard’s role in the Artemis program, as well as the only NASA mission that’s currently in orbit around our Moon – the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). They spoke with science experts about recent science results and beautiful images coming from the mission. The day featured a center tour, with opportunities to learn about how NASA is studying the potential hazards that astronauts may face from emissions from the Sun and other space weather, and more.

NASA opened its doors to media and social media its annual "State of NASA" event, Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, at the agency’s locations across the country, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. JPL hosted 29 digital creators to learn how the center’s robotic missions help future human exploration of the Moon and Mars. Participants met scientists and engineers, and went behind the scenes in mission control, an indoor "Mars Yard" for testing landers and rovers, and the Spacecraft Assembly Facility, where Mars 2020, NASA's next rover, is preparing for launch later this year. www.nasa.gov/social/state-of-nasa

 

State of NASA event at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center on Monday, Feb. 2

 

On Monday, Feb. 2 NASA Marshall invited social media followers to an in-person State of NASA event. The event included a tour of the center which showcased highlights of the work Marshall is doing on the Space Launch System, NASA’s new heavy lift rocket. Another tour segment included the development and maintenance on the advanced life support systems on the International Space Station, as well as the life support systems that could be used on future exploration missions to Mars and other deep space destinations.

Participants in the 2018 "State of NASA" NASA social gathered in the mission support area of the historic Spaceflight Operations Facility at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The room is currently configured to support the InSight mission to Mars, which is slated to launch no earlier than May 5, 2018.

This image is cropped. Not terrible for an old Nikon D70s, I suppose. Should have set the ISO to the 200 minimum. Also shot in auto mode because I wanted to really experience the launch rather than focus too much on the photo taking. Probably could have sacrificed more blown-out smoke to see more of the rocket.

The largest spacecraft welding tool in the world, the Vertical Assembly Center officially is open for business at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. The 170-foot-tall, 78-foot-wide giant completes a world-class welding toolkit that will be used to build the core stage of America's next great rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS).

 

SLS will be the most powerful rocket ever built for deep space missions, including to an asteroid and eventually Mars. The core stage, towering more than 200 feet tall (61 meters) with a diameter of 27.6 feet (8.4 meters), will store cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen that will feed the rocket's four RS-25 engines.
