SAFARI 2000 – Pietersberg, 2000
The Southern African Regional Science Initiative (SAFARI 2000) project was an international science initiative to study the linkages between land and atmosphere processes conducted from 1999-2001 in the southern African region. In addition, SAFARI 2000 examined the relationship of biogenic, pyrogenic, and anthropogenic emissions and the consequences of their deposition to the functioning of the biogeophysical and biogeochemical systems of southern Africa.
During September 2000 NASA flew an ER-2 out of Polokwane, also known as Pietersburg. The ER2 carried a number of imaging instruments and was accompanied by low level in situ measurements conducted from a University of Washington C-580. Flying took place over South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia. The project was supported and supplied by a USAF C-141 and K -135 from March AFB. The single seater ER-2 flew across the Atlantic from Recife Brazil.

On Wednesday, March 6, 2019, students in the Flagstaff Unified School District spoke with Astronaut Anne McClain aboard the International Space Station. The opportunity was because a grant awarded to the Lowell Observatory and FUSD from NASA.

"Less than three years after Sputnik, NASA began test firing the Saturn 1, the first launch vehicle created specifically for the space program. It was the largest rocket ever built in America and led to the development of the huge Saturn V. The Saturn1B was used to launch the unmanned Apollo 5 and the three-man Apollo 7 into orbit. It remained in service in the Apollo program until 1968.
Perhaps the most significant task of the Saturn 1B was delivering the Skylab crewmembers to America's first space station. As big as a three-bedroom house. Skylab was the largest object NASA placed in orbit. It was occupied by a rotation of three-man crews who spent a total of 171 days on board. They performed over 300 scientific and engineering experiments, establishing procedures in use today on the International Space Station."
Check this out from NASA -- It is not a coincidence that planets line up. That's because all of the planets orbit the Sun in (nearly) a single sheet called the plane of the ecliptic. When viewed from inside that plane -- as Earth dwellers are likely to do -- the planets all appear confined to a single band. It is a coincidence, though, when three of the brightest planets all appear in nearly the same direction. Such a coincidence was captured about a month ago. Featured above, Earth's Moon, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter were all imaged together, just before sunrise, from the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. A second band is visible diagonally across this image -- the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy. If you wake up early, you will find that these same planets remain visible in the morning sky this month, too. (ift.tt/2ymUp28)

This spring NASA researchers took to the skies to capture data about the effects of jet biofuels on aircraft emissions and contrails. In this image, NASA's DC-8 research aircraft, which had the job of burning the biofuel, leads one of the "sampling" chase aircraft across an early morning sky near NASA's Armstrong Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif. The science instruments on the chase aircraft, as they were flown through the DC-8's wake, were able to record more data about how the emissions mixed with air. The tests, known as Alternative Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise Emissions or ACCESS II, were a follow-on to flight tests done in 2013. ACCESS II confirms that the biofuel results in at least 50 percent reduction in soot emissions when burning the blended fuel as opposed to standard jet fuel. With access doors at Space Launch Complex 37 opened on Nov. 24, 2014, the Orion spacecraft and Delta IV Heavy stack is visible in its entirety inside the Mobile Service Tower where the vehicle is undergoing launch preparations. Orion will make its first flight test on Dec. 4 with a morning launch atop the United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket. Orion’s crew module is underneath the Launch Abort System and nose fairing, both of which will jettison about six minutes, 20 seconds after launch. The tower will be rolled away from the rocket and spacecraft 8 hours, 15 minutes before launch to allow the rocket to be fueled and for other launch operations to proceed. The spacecraft will orbit the Earth twice, including one loop that will reach 3,600 miles above Earth. No one will be aboard Orion for this flight test, but the spacecraft is being designed and built to carry astronauts on exploration missions into deep space. The Flight Loads Laboratory at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center is celebrating 50 years. It sprang into existence during the era of the X-15 rocket plane and the YF-12 and SR-71 Blackbirds, and was dedicated to testing the latest in high-speed flight. In this image from 1971, the YF-12 forebody's radiant heating system is being tested at the Flight Loads Laboratory under conditions experienced at Mach 3, or three times the speed of sound, over 2,000 miles an hour. Eventually the entire airframe was tested in the lab, always with the goal to collect data, validate parts and reduce risk to the aircraft and the pilots who flew them. NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft took this stunning image of Pluto only a few minutes after closest approach on July 14, 2015. The image was obtained at a high phase angle –that is, with the sun on the other side of Pluto, as viewed by New Horizons. ORACLES – Walvis Bay, 2016
Southern Africa produces almost a third of the Earth’s biomass burning (BB) aerosol particles, yet the fate of these particles and their influence on regional and global climate is poorly understood. ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS) was a five year investigation with three Intensive Observation Periods (IOP) designed to study key processes that determine the climate impacts of African BB aerosols. Particles lofted into the mid-troposphere are transported westward over the SE Atlantic, home to one of the three permanent subtropical Stratocumulus (Sc) cloud decks in the world. The stratocumulus “climate radiators” are critical to the regional and global climate system.
