Seen around 60 feet as we transited the fisherman/shark hangout area of the reef. At first i thought this was a Greasy Reefcod, but its size was immense! When i looked at the photos it is clearly not the same grouper. It spent all its time in the rocks and retreating back deeper. I liked this shot best sincethe shadowing of the mouth and luminance on the eye make it looks menacing, but it was a very cautious fish in reality. The lines of the body folded on itself also lend a dynamic effect to the picture.

I was working in the F14-16 range on my 105mm nikkor and flipped the Super Macro Converter down to take a shot at these omnipresent squat lobsters. I think moving my F stop up to max would have brough in the claws more compltely, but I'm very satisfied with my results on teh eyes of this crustacean!

This was a great specimen to play with. It was flashing lots of colors constantly and was fairly trusting and tame. I was able to play with video (my technique is still poor with my D-500). I love the starbursts on their dorsum.

Usualy with nudibranchs I require a 105mm lens for engaging macro photography. This day I was using my 60mm and had a hard time trying to fit this 10cm nudibranch on the D-500 crop sensor. It was very lovely to watch as is moved fairly quickly on the coral. The colors made me think of 1970's style cartoons. Quite garish.

 

I'm unable to completely identify this specimen. The edges are more serrated than ruffled which makes goniobranchus somewhat less likely. The colors made glossodoris somewhat more likely. In the end I'm not sure of the genus or species...

I'm constantly drawn to these fish. It might be their furtive nature. It might be the tendency to hide under rocks, but stare out at passers by. It might be how they move into view for short periods of time then fly away. You can find squirrelfish, solderfish, and cardinalfish hanging out together under rocks, and some of the most satisfying Zen like moments I've had diving were under rocks with these red fishes.
