Widnes 28-8-86 40135 (97406) returns to Speke from Warrington having tripped a most lengthy and varied assortment of wagons on what appears to have been a test working for 40135 as it never entered the yard at Warrington merely running-round in Latchford Sidings and returning to Speke

19823 is seen sporting an old style front number with a new style dest, side and rear number at Straford on the N86

Warrington 28-8-86 20055+180 emerge from under Warrington bank Quay station on empty HAAs from Fiddlers Ferry power station

Chester 12-1-86 (SUN) 40012 (97407) is seen passing through Chester station on a rake of Turbots going to an engineering job just West of Beeston Castle. Upon completion of work the 40 ran round at Beeston and Tarporley loop and returned to Chester or more likely to Mold Junction spoil tip. This picture is 1 of the 300 pictures in Paul Hill's recently released book on the life and times of 40012 covering from delivery to present day in preservation. It isn't cheap at £30 but is in a good cause with all proceeds going towards 40012

Wrexham 5-4-86 97405 (40060) has just arrived at Wrexham on a short ballast train from Crewe Gresty Lane for Watery Road Yard at Wrexham seen on the right

Chester 27-4-86

25095 had been on engineering duties replacing wooden sleepers and 60 foot rails with concrete sleepers and CWR at Christleton on the outskirts of Chester on the Crewe line. When the job was completed 25095 reversed through Chester station on the redundant track panels towards the engineering sidings at the North side of the triangle formed where the Birkenhead line comes into Chester

Warrington 28-8-86 97406 (40135) emerges from under Warrington Bank Quay with a mixed assortment of wagons from Speke Yard that she will take into Latchford Sidings and then back to Speke. We could only presume that it was a test working for the 40 after maintenance but it made a nice picture whatever it was!

Speke 28-8-86 97406 (40135) had worked a very long freight of assorted wagons from Speke to Warrington and back, running-round in Latchford Sidings without even going in Arpley Yard. She is seen here approaching Speke on the return. The wagons included some that were condemned as shown by the first few on the return. We never did find out what it was all about but we didn't mind as we got some nice shots of it but unfortunately this one was ruined by a lack of sun.

Chester 18-5-86 (SUN) 97405 (40060) had sat all day in the engineers sidings opposite the depot until the evening when a driver took it back to the shed

Peak Forest 6-12 86 It's Saturday afternoon and 45058 is still on duty as shunter at Dove Holes Quarry as it makes up a full train of loaded HTVs that it will drop in the "Long Siding" ready for departure. Note the new arrivals in the shape of air-braked hoppers for RMC in the background as a sign of what is to come.

Chester 25-4-86 25042 is one of the last vacuum-braked only examples of Class 25 still in service and is seen crossing onto the Crewe line at Chester East Junction with a van train from North Wales having been routed via the Through lines to the East side of the station

St. Helens 14-9-86 (SUN) 97405 (40060) has just reversed into the yard with its spoil train from Warrington and will run-round its train and then shunt it into the dead-end sidings

Edge Hill 6-7-86 (SUN) 97405 (40060) had been on a ballast job with a rake of Mermaids in the tunnels on the approach to Liverpool Lime Street and after completion of the work had emerged into the daylight at Edge Hill station on the platform road visible in the photo. In order to access Tuebrook engineers sidings '60 had to reverse on the middle track until completely under cover in the almost dis-used tunnel and then emerge into daylight again on the far track. It was a lovely bit of shunting to listen to and observe, only let down by the lack of sunshine

Helsby 18-1-86 97406 (40135) arrives at Helsby on a brakevan plus a single wagon loaded with rails for engineering work the following day. We saw her leave Garston stabling point for Edge Hill, followed her there and then came down here for a shot hoping it would be brighter than Liverpool on a wet Saturday in January! It had stopped raining!

Warrington Arpley 26-3-86 97406 (40135) is sat in the sidings behind Warrington Arpley Junction signalbox on a train of track panels. She would drop these and pick up the rail lifting wagons in the background and trip them to Fazakerley

Chester 11-5-86 (SUN) 40060 (97405) arrives back at Chester engineers sidings on rail lifting wagons having been renewing rails at Christleton just out of Chester on the Crewe line

Shrewsbury Sutton Bridge Junction 7-6-86 40122+25288 head down the Cambrian on the Welsh Thunderer railtour to Pwllheli. I have never seen so many heads at windows but no arms stuck out! I think the 25 was covering for a broken window on D200 but it could be useful if the old 40 had a problem down the coast as it was a long way from help.

Widnes West Deviation Jct 28-8-86 97406 (40135) passes on a Garston-Warrington trip.It may have been a test working as it went straight back without going in the yard

Chester 6-4-86 (SUN) 40060 (97405) had been working at Christleton just out of Chester on the Crewe line and had arrived in Chester station on a ballast train and a ballast cleaner. She dropped the ballast train in the station while she dropped the ballast cleaner in the PW sidings north of the triangle at Chester and is seen returning to pick up the empty ballast and put that in a different siding

Llandudno 26-5-86 40122 (D200) reverse its ECS into the un-used bay platform at Llandudno station having just run-round its train, 08:20 Stoke-Llandudno

Wrexham 24-5-86 97405 (40060) reverses its empty spoil train from Gresty Lane into the yard at Croes Newydd

Lostock Hall Junction 26-10-86 (SUN) 25908 had been working on the WCML with its train of track cranes and had reversed round from Farington Junction to Lostock Hall Junction in order to return to the North

Edge Hill 13-12-86 It's Saturday and it's been raining all day. 97405 (40060) has worked light engine from Speke to Fazakerley to pick up this train of track panels and return to Garston Yard ready for engineering work the next day. The rain is getting worse as 97405 prepares to depart Edge Hill on 9X34 Fazakerley-Garston having just run-round its train. We went to Allerton for another shot but it was raining so hard it's not worth putting on here

Peak Forest 6-12-86 It must have been a busy day for 45058 that day because she is still shunting loaded HTVs from Dove Holes Quarry into the Long Siding at Peak Forest on a Saturday afternoon. We didn't mind because it was sunny for a change and the following weekend it was raining heavily!

Chester 12-1-86 (SUN) It's fairly early on Sunday morning and the sun is only just over the horizon as 97407 (40012) picks up a rake of Turbots from the engineers sidings opposite Chester Depot for a spoil duty at Beeston Castle

Buxton 8-2-86 It wasn't the best of weather on this Saturday in '86 and snow was falling over at Peak Forest but it appears to have stopped by the time 50012 arrives at Buxton on "The Derbyshire Dingle" railtour seen emerging from Ashwood Dale into Buxton

Christleton 6-4-86 (SUN) 97405 (40060) sits "Wrong-line" just outside Chester on the line to Crewe with a ballast train during a Sunday engineering job where they were relaying the line from Crewe on consecutive weekends

Llandudno 26-5-86 With Llandudno signalbox visible in the background 40122 (D200) sets off on its return journey to Stoke on the 18:15 departure from Llandudno

Fazakerley 13-12-86 97405 (40060) has just worked light-engine from Speke to Fazakerley in order to work the regular Saturday morning trip back to Garston or where-ever the trains were stabled ready for Sunday engineering work. Here 97405 is seen from the footbridge as she departs for Speke on 9X34 formed of a train of loaded track panel wagons

Beeston Castle 12-1-86 (SUN) 97407 (40012) arrives at the work-site at Beeston Castle on empty Turbots from the engineers sidings opposite Chester shed to be loaded with spoil by the excavators at the side of the train

Chester 27-4-86 (SUN) 25095 is seen at Christleton just outside Chester on the Crewe line on a train of redundant track panels

Wrexham 5-4-86 97405 (40060) has just arrived at Wrexham on a short train of loaded ballast wagons for Watery Road Yard from Crewe Gresty Lane and has backed them onto the front of a short rake already there causing it to stop in an awkward position for photography.

Warrington 28-8-86 40135 (97406) emerges from under Warrington Bank Quay station on a long and varied assortment of wagons on what appears to have been a test working for 135 from Speke to Warrington and back merely running-round in Latchford Sidings before returning to Speke. The station appears to be leaning but the 40 looks alright. A blind man would never notice!

Wrexham 26-3-86 Me and Robert had covered most of Warrington area and Liverpool looking for the 4 departmental 40s this day with 97406 (40135) working to Fazakerley and we ended up at Wrexham where 97405(40060) was in the process of running-round a single van as we arrived. We knew nothing of the working at the time but there was a 4J22 22:41 Crewe-Wrexham parcels service which worked forward from Chester as a single van and it had either 97405 or 97407(40012) as motive power for much of March 1986 and some of April (Class 40 Motherlist) I'm presuming there was some light engine working back to Chester at night and then return to Wrexham in the afternoon as this was about 16:00 ish from memory. 97405 has just run-round her lightweight train and is drawing back into the bay platform where the coach will be loaded. At departure time she will reverse out onto the Main and then depart for Chester where the van will be attached to another service for onward movement

Edge Hill 6-7-86 (SUN) 97405 (40060) prepares to reverse into the tunnels connecting Edge Hill with Liverpool Lime Street on a train of loaded Mermaids. I think the sun went as soon as the 2 blokes went past!

Helsby 18-1-86 40135 (97406) arrives at Helsby on an engineers trip working from Speke with 1 wagon loaded with rails for engineering work the following day

Chester 9-2-86 (SUN) 40012 (97407) is running "Wrong-line" dropping ballast during a Sunday morning relaying operation under Chester's City Walls
