Bagan (formerly Pagan) is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar . From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, the first kingdom to unify the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day.

I did a three-day hike from Kalaw to Inle Lake in Myanmar. I met this lady after I just had lunch on the 2nd day. I wasn’t feeling great as the heat had reached 30 degrees celsius and there wasn’t any shelter from the sun. I was on my way out to continue the trek when I spotted her and asked if I could take a photo as I felt she had something special about her.

The Burmese Python (Python bivittatus) is a large constrictor originally native to parts of Southeast Asia. The species, capable of growing to over 20 feet long and weighing several hundred pounds, now also call the state of Florida in the Southeastern United States home. The snakes were first imported into the United States due to demand for the exotic pet trade. Wild populations subsequently became established in South Florida from animals that either escaped captivity or were intentionally released. With no natural predators to keep their population in check, it is estimated that over 100,000 of the massive snakes now inhabit the Everglades wetlands. Researchers have documented the pythons preying on more than 70 different animal species, many of which are endangered and found nowhere else. This has placed the sensitive ecology and biodiversity of the Everglades in peril — so much so that local authorities now ask members of the public to participate in annual hunts of the invasive reptiles in order to control their numbers and save native wildlife.

Burmese marionette theater, known as Yok thé, is popular throughout Myanmar. A puppeteer controls a single marionette with 18 strings for male characters or 19 strings for female characters. I took this shot in a woodworking workshop in Mandalay, the capital of the Mandalay Region, Myanmar.

Wind turbines ahead of a vast area of peat bog close to our new home in north Kerry, although this location is actually in Limerick so close are we to the border. Looking for a suitable place to walk my dog Willow I came across this track recently not knowing if there was anything worth pointing my camera at - the light yesterday was enough reason on its own and so this hastily arranged composition was born. In my mind's eye I can also see the scene in snow (assuming we get snow in these parts) - but that's for later. Or perhaps not much later! The 'Burma Road' title was given to me by a pub landlord (O'Shaughnessys) from the nearby coastal village of Glin who also shared other local history snippets over a delicious pint of Guinness in his wonderful bar the other day. It was all work of course!

In the Myanmar Buddhist tradition, it is compulsory that every boy over eight years old to twenty have to enter the Buddhist Order for a week or more. This is celebrated with a Novitiation ceremony which includes a parade at a famous pagoda at their town or surrounding areas.

Myanmar is still one of the countries that’s relatively untouched by tourism. The mountains around Inle Lake are wonderful for hiking and exploring. Especially in the morning the light on the fields looks wonderful. In the mountain villages families offer very basic accommodation for guests and local guides help you to get to your destination.
