After years of chasing this moment...finally got what I was hoping for. Soft light, fog, the Golden Gate Bridge tower sticking out. Pure bliss this morning.
I always like it when I can capture a good reflection in my scene. This reflection is not picture perfect, but I think the wake of the motorboat adds a point of imagination. With such a spectacular sunrise, the passengers in the cruiser must be ecstatic with the beauty of the moment. So let your imagination go and enjoy the ride.

One of the most picture-perfect areas for autumn colors is Bishop Creek—west of Bishop, California. This location is just off the road to North Lake, looking westward toward the Sierra peaks. The beauty of this rugged country is breathtaking: from the golden aspen to the jagged peaks of the Sierra.

Gearing up for a wild summer ahead...lots of trips planned, Tetons, Glacier, Alaska, Banff, Yellowstone, Kauai. Looking forward to processing some fresh material. I haven't been super inspired lately, frustrating when any hint of creativity leaves you. I've become more selective with what I WANT to process, but still process images that I'm not in love with...just because I feel pressure to create new images and I don't have much else to work on. That happens to me a lot....hoping to change that this year. I really enjoyed my AZ trip, but found myself working the files a lot to get to a final image, and I wasn't super happy with the final results. I find that I actually process much better when there's dramatic/moody light versus colorful, pink and fiery skies. I just have no idea what direction to take with some of those colorful skies, and I find they often end up looking less realistic when I'm done. It's challenging. This was some nice light in Zion at a typical spot, but one of my favorite areas to shoot in the park. I just love these towers. I was fortunate enough to share it with Eric Bennett, Alex Noriega, and Hunter Page. All great people and super down to earth, made the morning that much better. Met up with Eric and Hunter again at White Pocket and looking forward to the next trip where we cross paths.

Who doesn't love the textures, colors, patterns, flowing lines, etc. of sand dunes? Personally, I'm amazed by the many different colors that the dunes can assume, all depending upon the light. In this shot, I was shooting directly into the sun as it set behind the distant mountains. Properly exposing for the sky resulted in the the dunes being quite underexposed. My original intent was to do a composite but the dark moody dunes appealed to me far more than the blazing sky, most of which was ultimately cropped out of the shot. I was able to recover some detail and a touch of color in the dunes with some minor editing in photoshop.
Taken on the last night of a recent trip to DVNP and the Alabama Hills with with Kevin Benedict and Sky Matthews. Whether photographically successful or not, its always a great time traveling with those guys.
I've had the pleasure of hiking the Narrows several times; I've also seen countless amazing shots of the reflected light casting its trademark warm glow on the canyon's distant walls. However, I don't recall ever seeing a scene like this one (whether live or in a photo). I was lucky enough to stumble upon this particular light show while hiking out of the Narrows during a November 2019 trip with Kevin Benedict and Sky Matthews.
While I cannot honestly say that this is the best of compositions, I can say that it is probably the best I could manage in my photogasmic panic that ensued once I stopped starring, closed my jaw and realized that I probably only had a few minutes at most to unpack my gear (which I had of course packed up thinking that I was done for the day) and set up before the lightshow disappeared for good.
All in all, I'm fairly happy that I was even able to fire off a few shots and get something in focus and usable. I cannot wait to see what surprises will be revealed the next time I have the opportunity to hike one of my all time favorite places.
I hope you enjoy the picture and as always, thanks for the time to look!
Ansel Adam's iconic shot of Mt. Williamson from Manzanar has always been a personal favorite. A few years ago, Kevin Benedict and I went on what amounted to a wild goose chase looking for the spot that Adams took his famous shot. After driving around for what seemed like hours on some very sketchy dirt roads that were nearly impassible even in a four-wheel drive and one very close call that almost resulted in our rented SUV becoming a permanent fixture of the landscape, we ended up heading home empty handed.
In hindsight, striking out on that day was probably for the best as the mountain was covered in clouds and the light was frankly terrible. On the plus side, we did get quite a story out of our little backroad adventure.
This past February Kevin Benedict, Sky Matthews and I were back in the Sierra Nevada's and decided to give it another go (probably due more to my persistent nudging than any real desire on their part, so thanks to them both for indulging me). This time around, armed with some slightly better intelligence, we were actually able to find the right spot - though it did take quite a bit of looking, Sky's eagle eye, and a nice hike (yes, this time we were smart and left the car in the parking lot).
It was the middle of the day when we began our search, so I wasn't really expecting to take anything other than some snapshots on the cell phone before heading to a better location for sunset; but as luck would have it, when we finally found the right spot, some interesting looking clouds started rolling in prompting me to take out the tripod and camera. While not even close to the light show captured by Adam's in his Mt. Williamson shot, I really like how the clouds above Mt. Williamson seem to take on the look of a second, distant mountain range. While nothing will ever top the original, I do hope that my homage does it some justice.

Don't ask me why, I have no clue, but apparently the fog that comes very often cover San Francisco's coastline has been named Karl and last night I was chasing it as night was falling over the Mount Tamalpais state park area.
A Wing and a Flare
~~~~~
I hope you love moon halos as much as I do! Especially if they're hovering over a weathered Lockheed Harpoon! Although my Clear Outside app called for almost 100% cloud coverage, it indicated solely high clouds. And I knew high clouds often look beautiful when smeared in a long exposure image. I met friends Ivan, Tami, and Tyler at an old decommissioned WWII airfield. I ended up staying until 4:30 am, much of it catching up with Tyler before driving back and listening to metal and Lakers podcasts. I illuminated the scene with a handheld Protomachines LED2 during the exposure. The wing looks extra looooooong due to the distortion from my fisheye lens! Fun!
Night time at Bedrock City, a place right out of history that I have loved from childhood. I've been fortunate enough to do night photography there several times. However, this time was bittersweet. When I was there, I thought it might be the last time I would ever see it since it was going to be torn down to build a raptor park. Since then, however, I've heard some recent news that the new owners have decided to keep the buildings, so I am quite happy to hear that. I lit the prehistoric service station from several different angles with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. The clouds often blotted out the full moon but added mystery and drama to the images. Here, the moon is peaking over the top of the gas station. This was photographed during a 10-day 2559-mile night photography road trip with Mike Cooper, Tim Little, and George Loo. This photo may appear in a third book of night photography that I am working on now.
Moon Over Nazca (1761)
~~~~~
As a kid, I loved Indiana Jones movies, and so I was excited to photograph the Aeropuerto de Nazca fuel truck used in one of those movies, now rusting away in a decommissioned WWII airfield, photographed on a cold February evening. I believe this is a 1937 Ford truck. This is a long exposure night photo which shows the movement of the stars over long periods of time. I illuminated the truck with a ProtoMachines LED2 handheld flashlight from camera right while the tripod-mounted camera's shutter was open. This will likely be featured in my next night photography book, which I'm working on now. Until then, my new book "Abandoned Southern California: the Slowing of Time" is out!

Caught Between The Moon and Yucca Valley (9405)
~~~~~
The moon behind a silhouette of a Joshua Tree in beautiful Joshua Tree National Park, CA on a perfect night in mid-June. I met my friend Dave for dinner and then drove out to this picturesque area of the Park for the beginning of my photog adventure in this area. To the right of this photo was a strange humming sound, and as I walked closer, I realized that it was a giant bee hive. That area could wait for another time to explore. Time to walk to a different area and photograph! I liked the way the moon appeared to nestle between the branches of this Joshua Tree, and the stars this evening were magnificent, shimmering on that way that stars shimmer only in the desert night sky.
The Gold Eye and the Heavens Above (6322)
You know you are somewhere quiet and remote when you are keenly aware of that barely perceptible "hum" and are conscious of how well you can hear your breathing. Silence is louder and the stars shine brighter. This is Ojo Oro Arch, a hidden gem located in a secret corner of the Mojave Desert, not a strange new world from "Star Trek" but almost as far. Bodhi Smith, Chip Morton and I hiked several miles and hung out during this night photography trip. When I finally settled down to sleep under the stars around 3:30 am cocooned by a canopy of stars and the Milky Way arching directly overhead. Every several minutes, I saw shooting stars streaking through the night sky. Much thanks to Bodhi for inviting me on this fantastic trip. I illuminated the rocky arch with warm white light and red light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. Thank you very much for looking!
Night photo in the Mojave Desert with a very old school schoolbus that seems straight out of Mad Max or Wasteland Weekend. This Calla Lilly valley is such a nice secret gem to watch sunset. When I went last year, I was really sad to see all the damage done by humans around the little creek. Trampled flowers, cut off to take home, it was the opposite of the leave no trace moto...
This year I went back sooner and find a lot less carnage.
Decided to reprocess this old shot from the famous beach in Iceland. Big chunks of ice from the glacier end up on the beach and get carved into ephemeral pieces of art by the waves.
Take Me to Emerald City (7473)
~~~~~
A late evening scene of two buses angling in at a distant mill. And I managed to stay awake for Thanksgiving dinner the following evening, a great success. Although warm and sunny during the day, by the time I packed up, it was below freezing and I had ice on my windshield. I illuminated the interior of the two buses with warm white and green light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure.
~~~~~
I believe both school buses were built in the 1930s, although I don't know this for a fact. That's all the information I have on these other than to say that they would probably make a cool RV conversion. Then again, remember, I'm a person who thinks that maybe I should convert either the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile or a large taco truck into an RV, so take it for what it's worth.
I Followed The Lights To the Mojave Barn (4904)
~~~~~
Near the top of a rise is an immense barn, rising up out of the Mojave Desert amidst the Joshua Trees and the pines, where the stars shine more brightly. And sometimes, if you are a night photographer and you ask really nicely, you could enter the barn and shoot light out from every crack. I was such a night photographer. Dusty but grinning from ear to ear, I walked through the cavernous two-story structure, throwing out warm beams of light with my faithful ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device while my camera faced the barn and registered all 195 seconds of the exposure in this resultant image.
