This quite handsome Burrowing Owl was found guarding his burrow with wildflowers and the Marco River in the background. His mate barely struck her head out of the tunnel to see what I was doing. I shot this at ground level 20 minutes before sunset.

Sirius or Xm?

That's the question...

High Country, South Island, New Zealand.

Crodo doing his usual.... 'scrooching' down somehow on his legs ..so that only his feet are visible. Not quite sure how he does that...

Several times a day he shows up... maybe for a drink; perhaps to dunk some food thing in the bird bath...

but, some times ...just to hang out ... and, peek into the window at me...

He knows I only feed him one time during the day ... and he shows up around suppertime for that. I give him peanuts ....

But, some days he shows up, lands on the lawn and looks at the window and caws to me... and, it's loud! Sometimes he sits on this little privacy fence near the patio kitchen window ...and, does the same.

I open the window and tell him he is being rude ..but then, he looks at me like this .. so cute, and it's hard to be upset with him. So, I take a few photos and then... feel guilty that I've used him as a photo op and do go out and take him a few extra nuts.

I'm not sure who the other crow is that hangs out with him.... but, I'm beginning to think it is the youngest of his 3 babies from last year. They seem quite close, but not like mates.

They say the babies often stay with parents for a few years... and, this one would have been still in the nest when its Mom somehow broke her wing. The other two were out and about. She couldn't go back to the nest after that because she couldn't fly. She learned to jump up branch by branch like a ladder on the tree across the street .. but, even by the end of summer could only fly ..sort of .. short distances from one tree to another if she climbed higher on one tree and more or less sailed to the other .... so her mate, Crodo... looked after the babies from then on as well as fending for her. Maybe the baby is still with him.

Mrs. Crodo disappeared about the same time he and the babies headed south for the winter... I don't think he has found a new mate yet...

Here is my most recent image of Butch. This was taken at mid-day this afternoon. Many of you have been asking about the puppies, well as you can see, they are growing and are getting along just fine. Thank You. They are just slightly over 100 days old, born July 1, 2009. They don't like to sit still for long but today was so hot, so they wanted to park it in the shade.

I hope ya'll like him!

LUKE! This is my best friends dog who is older, blind and has diabetes like myself. He gets his injections and does very well getting around on sense of smell and hearing. To most humans, sight is the most important sense, followed by touch, sound, and smell. For dogs, the order is smell, sight, sound, and then touch, with a dog's sense of smell being by far the most important.

Charlie and I stopped above the Kickapoo River on a small bluff before we continued on the Wintergreen Trail.

It was a buggy and full of mosquitoes because of last week's flooding. But very worth it, we found some incredible fungi.

A full head 'net' saved the day!

I'm digging into the archives, haven't had too much time to take new pics lately.

Here, the praying mantis has returned. He's on my hand. He's all alien-proud and bug-happy. Because soon he's gonna eat himself a big fat carpenter bee. Yum! Mmm. Delicious.

Listen, let's be clear, praying mantises are weird. I'll tell you a story about a mantis. The wife and I were sitting outside a museum, and upon the bench arm sat a praying mantis.

As cars would go by down the street, his head would turn and follow them. And he'd gaze quizzically as they passed.

Now, I don't know about you, but I've never seen an insect with that kind of... awareness? If you moved your hand around, he watched it, followed it.

It was like playing with a cat or something, if the cat were green and small and looked like something from Mars.

We went out to explore more of the valley and the creek yesterday.

************

He does wear a beeper collar. He is strong willed and will wander off to follow a trail if he doesn't wear it.

He would be hard to find in the forest since he is only 7" tall.

This keeps the both of us close and safe in 'the wild woods'.

Here's my August self portrait with my BFF, known in Flickr-land as See_The_Easy_Life. We used to work together, but now I work clear on the other side of town. Today we met for lunch and both had our cameras with us. We also took pictures of lunch, but my shots didn't look very appetizing. LOL. I had a blast. Here, we are trying to see who has the longest arms - we're both taking a picture.

Landed on me several times, but not long enough for me to take a photo myself!

He's so cute! Love his button nose! :)

I spent a great afternoon in the back yard after church helping Toni build a new pond. The pugs joined us and helped as only they can. Frank took a little break to enjoy the sunshine. I grabbed my camera for a quick photo and caught him catching some rays. It was a great afternoon.

ODC - Bright

This little guy can strip every last kernal from this cob! Hysterical to watch.

SHOWING HER STRONG DISLIKE FOR THE CAMERA. SHE JUST SEES IT AND - OFF SHE GOES. THIS WAS TAKEN JUST BEFORE...ANOTHER GREAT ESCAPE. HER FACE IS SO EXPRESSIVE - NO DOUBT I'M GETTING " A LOOK". I'VE NEVER USED THE FLASH - THIS LITTLE LADY JUST HAS A HUGE ISSUE WITH CAMERAS..

TOO FUNNY :)

on Sunday morning went hiking at KVR. We went hunting for cool fungi!

Seems I always catch Charlie at about the same spot in the trail often!!!

We had great success in finding fungi!

I've been too busy the past several days.

And I am not able to comment on all of your pictures, friends but I will catch up soon.

Have a great Sunday!!!

I can't stay down for too long when I am with my little friends. I love them so much! I just want to play with them all the time.

I hope ya'll love Spanky too!

Mike

Rascal almost always accompanies me on my photography runs, and stays by my side while I download and process my photos. He is trained to the point now that he starts to go nuts when he sees me pick up the camera and tripod.

All of these photos were taken within 45 seconds (actually there are two more I didn't include because they are basically duplicates). A robin was at the meal worm feeder and this little guy landed on the peanut feeder. At first, I thought he might be trying to convince the robin to leave . . . but I am really not sure what he was up to! I have never seen one go over to the side like this. I was lucky enough to be standing there with the camera in my hands!

Poor Alvin...what a way to start your week. Have a great new week, flickr friends

I had time to see Dingo for the last time, as he has cancer. He had recently been flown in a private plane to Mexico and went on a boat ride. All his favorite things, before he joins friends at the rainbow bridge. I'll aways miss Darling Dingo, he was a jewel.

As with any journey, who you travel with can be more important than your destination

My girls were up on the arena fence watching something after we were working our horses on Saturday. I snapped this shot, and as I looked at it and thought of a title, I started thinking I wish I could sit up there on that fence with them forever. We have the best times, conversations, and memories together. So, there's my title.
