People often ask me, “What is your favorite shot?” By far, this is the number ONE photo. It is no secret; Alaska holds a special place in my heart. Over the last 33 years, I have made many trips from the south eastern coast of the U.S.A. to capture the beauty of the 49th state. With my travels, I have learned a bit about Denali National Park.
Early in the 1900’s gold was discovered in Kantishna, first named Eureka, which is an area just north of Mount Denali. Of course, the gold brought miners. At this time, no roads or railroads were in the area. Miners had to live off the land, and food (especially meat) was in high demand.
In 1907-1908, Charles Sheldon, a naturalist, traveled to the area to hunt and study the wildlife. He discovered that market hunters were killing off the wildlife (especially the Dall Sheep) to feed miners and workers. If this were to continue, the animal life would be decimated. He wanted the area to become the first national park created specifically to protect wildlife. Sheldon petitioned congress to make Denali a national park. In 1917, Sheldon was successful, and the area became known as Mt. McKinley National Park. Later it became known as Denali National Park & Preserve which grew in size to over 6 million acres. Denali is the third largest national park in the United Stated.
Many people think it was established for Mt. Denali, which is the tallest in the United States. Others think it was created because of the bears. However; it was established to save the animals and of course the all-white Dall sheep, which peaked Sheldon’s interest as he explored the area. As the park grew and the railroad was built, visitors started to come. To keep the wilderness intact, shuttle busses were started in 1972. The park had over 600,000 guests in 2017, which was the 100th Anniversary.
The above picture sums up the park’s history. My photo is the eye of a Denali Dall Sheep, which was the inspiration for Charles Sheldon. Look carefully into the eye. You can see a dark green shuttle bus with white horizonal strips, (remember, the concessionary busses started in 1972). The 2012 Denali National Park quarter features a beautiful Dall Ram with Mount Denali in the background. No trip to Alaska is considered complete without at least one day in Denali.
What you see, is the what I saw in my camera lens. NO Photo Shop was used to add the bus image! By the way, I did not plan the capture of the reflection. This discovery was made when I up-loaded the photos. Sometimes, unplanned shots become more than a memory. Hope you enjoy!
Found this art installation last weekend. Had to go back to shoot it in the evening as the daylight shadows messed it up. Seldom has the pov, crop and editing given itself as it did here. The whole shot was finding the spot.
Did I hear leading lines? :p
I am so happy that I could almost cry this is the first photo of a damselfly that I’ve ever taken in my life. The only thing I did to this photo was crop it. I’m just amazed at how beautiful it came out, I hope you will be too!
The odd thing, the miracle is the fact that I was sitting on the porch flickering and I was admiring photos of dragonflies & damselflies, I said to myself “I haven’t seen a damselfly in this area but it would be nice to see one up close”. This little lovely fly must have been a guardian Angel because less than five minutes my want was granted. This scarlet beauty stayed still but also danced around from branch to branch. I haven’t gone through them yet, this is the very last shot I took.
I may not be able to thank everyone personally but I do try because I do appreciate you looking at my photograph, faving it, or commenting on it. I would love to know what you guys think. I don’t know about you but I’m tickled pink! THANK YOU EVERYONE!
This photo holds so many memories for me. Attending the World Athletics Championship in the Olympic Stadium was the first. A day I will never forget, shared with my now deceased cousin and the build up to the publishing by National Geographic (described below).
It was captured at a heat of the Men's 110 Metres Hurdles, 2017 World Athletics Championships at the Olympic Stadium in London. I was positioned in the stands overhead the start line and took this shot as Ahmad Hazer (No.8) was leaving the blocks with a reaction time of 0.178 secs. The muscles and tendons in his leg are visibly taught for action. He's the greatest Lebanese sprinter in history but tested positive for the anabolic steroid Metenolone, in 2013 and was given a two-year ban from the sport.
This is my ONE and only PUBLISHED shot from National Geographic Your Shot. It was published in the Assigment 'Rethinking Portraiture' with the title 'Muscles of a Sprinter'.
The Editor Kristen McNicholas said in an Editor's Note: "I love this composition Sue and how the geometry of the runners and their lanes come together to capture the energy of this moment. My favorite detail is the shadow of Ahmad's hand on the track as he grasps to start his stride. Awesome moment and an awesome interpretation to 'rethink' how we view portraits." It also received an Editors Favourite from Kristen McNicholas, David Lee and Christina Shorter.
A memory that will last forever.
For interest I only had one attempt at this shot. I did not use continuous shooting. I anticipated the moment that the runners would leave the blocks and the result was this shot. I did not have an expensive DSLR to capture this shot, but used my trusty Panasonic Lumix compact that I carried with me ALL the time.

According to the votes, this picture came out as winner for 2009. I must say I agree, for it represents much of what was going on this year: a lot of Sigma 10-20, a lot of long shutter speed, a great trip to Skåne and Malmö, and of course, always the water landscape as my favorite topic and source of inspiration. Thanks for voting!
Last night I had an Idea: to Create a set with the four Elements; Water, Fire, Air and Earth, a nice way to express my creativity and point of view.

Thanks so much for all your nominations... but especially for:

The best photos in the world (since Jan. 27. 237 photos)
My best image this year. It was also two of the first shots from 2015. Here's hoping that 2016 will be as inspiring.
Locks on the Ponte Vecchio are put there by lovers. After "locking" their love on one of the horse tethers, they throw the key over the bridge into the Arno River to "seal" their love!
Today, early morning, under a cold rain... I was walking through Ponte Vecchio going to work and for the first time in 7 year I decided to take some pictures of this interesting custom... I think for this time, to lock my new love I'm going to buy some locks, just in case...
Florence (Italy) offers everyday a wonderful show of images and colors with the Sunsets over their bridges. Everyday I can, i set my camera on a bridge and take a picture.

Possibly the best head shot I have taken so far this year.
Very patient subject, even when the wind was trying to stop this model photographer relationship.

Yesterday night, Ponte Vecchio was colored with the Raibow colors to symbol the Peace...There were some Public Event against the War and for the Peace.. I was there and I shot this photo before....

Barcelona Street Artists - Graphiti, Dancers, Human Statues and a lot of kind of expressions of art and talents we can find in the streets of Barcelona
Last week I had a wonderful time exploring a wonderfully dilapidated barn and silo. I get so inspired by old wood and old architecture. The new and shiny is so bland to me...wisdom is found in the places that have been on this earth for much longer than I (that includes buildings too).
Finally I have my new apartment in the Florence's Historic Centre.
In a Historic and important street of Florence, at the 4th floor...
The first thing I saw when I come in was the windows view: the duomo! At night is beautiful, fantastic. Wonderful view.
In these photos, it is really messy, but tomorrow I will put it on order and I hope it will looks better..
But anyway, is a beautiful apartment with a chimney (fireplace) and the bedroom is on an wonderful intermediate floor.
On monday I will move here all my stuffs like books, tv and stereo, and everything else... and it will be a Home...
But anyway I very happy for that...
