Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 1.4/55
Photograph of a record player taken with the rare Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 1.4/55, one of the most uncommon high-speed M42 lenses from the late GDR optical production era. The shallow depth of field, smooth tonal transition and microcontrast illustrate the characteristic rendering of this lens at wide aperture.
The subject is a Dual CS 701, a direct-drive German turntable known for its exceptionally solid construction. Among enthusiasts it acquired the informal nickname “Eisenschwein”, referring to its notably heavy and robust build quality. The scene captures a quiet listening moment with this classic machine, linking analogue audio culture with the optical heritage of Carl Zeiss Jena.
The image demonstrates how the Pancolar combines fine subject isolation, smooth bokeh and clean microcontrast, qualities that continue to make it highly appreciated among collectors and users of historical high-speed optics.

[The LP cover was designed as a spoof of a 12x16-inch 12-page small-town English newspaper, entitled The St. Cleve Chronicle and Linwell Advertiser, with articles, competitions and advertisements lampooning the typical parochial and amateurish journalism of the local English press. The contents of the newspaper were written mostly by Anderson, bassist Jeffrey Hammond and keyboardist John Evan. Anderson recalls that the cover took longer to produce than the music.]
