Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from Zeus and Calliope?s musically inclined son. Founding members include musician/actor Harry Connick, Jr. and his father, Harry Connick, Sr., former New Orleans district attorney. With their first parade in 1994, the Krewe of 700 members established itself as a super Krewe. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.

The krewe?s throws include a number of sought-after items, including light-up Orpheus medallion beads, three different types of doubloons - Captain's, Krewe, & Musical Legends, four-foot-long stuffed dragons, and their prized throw is a custom decorated tambourine.

Notable floats include the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand. There?s also the Smoking Mary, an eight-unit float that looks like a steam locomotive. And everyone loves the three-unit, 139-foot Orpheus Leviathan Float, the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.

Over the years, Orpheus monarchs have included Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino, Sandra Bullock, Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Stevie Wonder, Laurence Fishburne, Forrest Whitaker, Brad Paisley, Anne Rice and Toby Keith.

Unlike many Carnival events which are members-only, visitors are allowed to buy tickets to the black-tie Orpheuscapade, a musical extravaganza after the parade in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Four joyful and musically-gifted street performers were rapping to a beat they created themselves. The performance took place in the bustling city on Swanston street. It was a gloomy Sunday, but their upbeat music switched up the vibes and the audiences were all cheering for them. All four performers showed very different emotions, where the female was laughing out of joy, the man with the cap was rapping with full emotions, the third man concentrating on making the tunes on the piano and the man in the shirt was focused on the performance. One frame with a high shutter speed could capture many emotions and happiness of the subjects can be translated to viewers too.

Et vraiment tous les compétiteurs ont démontré un niveau de talent sérieusement impressionant. Un merci à CLAY (EOW) et MARK THE MAGNANIMOUS (qui doublait sur les platines), nos juges pour la soirée. Pour le jam, c'était la 1ère fois qu'on a acceuilli KALIBRE au microphone et BUTTA BEATS (certainement pas un étranger au jam) mais pour la 1ère fois dans le house band comme batteur. De sérieux moments musicaux! Et la piste de danse en feu aussi! Dernièrement il ne faut pas oublié DELI SOKOLOW avec la bonne bouffe.

The third drawing was another musically inspired one, in which I drew the tuners on my guitar. First of all, the general idea of a guitar means plenty of freedom to me. In a way, it continues the story from the first drawing. Take freedom a step further, don’t just listen to the musical freedom of others, but make your own music to liberate yourself. Any instrument can be used to express oneself freely in so many ways. Further, I chose the tuners specifically as the focus of this drawing. They symbolize flexibility and the ability to change. What good is our pursuit of freedom if we cannot change things? To be unable to adjust the situation we are in would mean an end to the pursuit of anything, for the pursuit of anything requires change, especially the pursuit of freedom if one is not satisfied with the kind of freedom in their lives at present. And this “tuning” of freedom can mean different things depending on what the freedom fighter wants. Perhaps we’re just slightly off the key of freedom and need to tune up a bit? Or perhaps we need a radical change, the present freedom isn’t freedom at all, and we need to drop-tune to a completely different scale? Most guitarists tune in a standard scale, however, many others choose to change the tuning scale entirely for a different style of playing. Metaphorically speaking, this in itself is the flexibility of satisfaction and definition of freedom, and it’s the ability to seek change to an extent, the way one thinks freedom is, which in defining freedom, is a freedom in itself, to make one’s own standards.
