~ Another musically inspired piece~
Hmmmnn... hmmmm... hhmmmn...
I was captured the moment we met
Carried away with every word you said
It's a mystery how you got to me
I fell in the spell of your charms
With your siren's smile you caught me off guard
Just one glance took away my breath
Then you drew me in with your tenderness
You captivate my soul, I'm enraptured
You knocked me out and you locked me up
Stole my heart like a thief at love
Keep me here in your happy ever after
I'm captured (oh... I'm captured)
By the way just in case you care
I'm here to stay, I'm not going anywhere
I took a dive in your deep dark eyes
And I'm never coming up for air
I lost myself in this bond that we share
One sweet kiss took away my breath
Then you drew me in with your tenderness
You captivate my soul, I'm enraptured
You knocked me out and you locked me up
Stole my heart like a thief at love
Hold me tight in your happy ever after
Now you've got the best of me
No one else could hold the key
I'm captured
I'm captured
Just one touch took away my breath
When you drew me in I could not resist
You captivate my soul, I'm enraptured
You knocked me out and you locked me up
Stole my heart like a thief at love
Keep me here in your happy ever after

I've been fiddling with tube stereo since the early 1990s, and I think this system is as musically satisfying as any other I've ever pulled together.
It’s also the least expensive by far, so I thought I'd write it up. You can get a good taste of what modern tube audio sounds like with this system. The amp and speakers cost $350, and you'd be hard put to find a more natural, lyrical system for chamber music at four times that price. A system with deeper bass? Yes. A system that plays louder? Assuredly. But a system that better conveys the beauty of a performance? I can't think of one.
This little stereo is pure magic on vocals, and it’s 90% of what I'd ever want for jazz, folk, piano and chamber music. It’s great with percussion -- lots of kick!
It sounds more than decent on orchestral music and rock at modest volumes. The little APPJ N3 amp has three tubes and produces only 3.5 watts per channel. It’s tiny, yet it makes classic, water-clear, nineties-style tube audio.
I'm using it at my desk with the speakers about one meter from my ears. In this situation, the amp is called on to produce a fraction of a watt to play as loud as I want to play it. Thus, 3.5 watts is more than enough. With the speakers shown above it can produce ~95 dB SPL at 1 meter, far louder than I want.
The speaker is a four-inch (105mm) Fostex Kanspea kit from Madisound. It took less than an hour to assemble both speakers, so it’s only nominally a kit. Anyone with an icepick and a screwdriver can put them together. (I’ve heard that selling it as a nearly-completed kit lessens import duties, so that may be why it’s marketed in this fashion).
One rather special driver (Fostex FF105QWK) per channel covers the entire audio range from ~80Hz to 20kHz. Fresh out of the box, it sounds pretty sibilant, but once the speaker has played for 100 hours or so, the sound is remarkably sweet and coherent. (I left it playing all day in a room with the door closed for several days to burn it in.)
Despite the missing tweeter, there’s plenty of well-rendered treble response. In fact, I swapped out the stock Shuguang EL-84 tubes because the treble was a little too hot. The cabinet is a simple bass reflex design. Apart from the driver, the materials are nothing special, a 9mm fiberboard box with a wood-grain vinyl finish, cheap connectors and no speaker grill.
I've listened to a lot of fancy stereos over the years, including a few in the $100,000 range (which were not mine, obviously). This little system punches well above its price class. To my ear, it’s more musical – more listenable – than our big system downstairs, though it lacks that system’s extended bass and ability to play orchestral works at concert-hall levels.
On the downside, the system is mercilessly revealing when there are recording defects. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because that kind of system also reveals the details in good recordings with great delicacy and accuracy. My favorite badly done recording of a good song is Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”. It'll make your ears bleed on this system. Also, if you use Bluetooth or play MP3s you'll likely hear the compression artifacts.
It deserves a good turntable or CD-or-better quality digital sources. Give it good source material and it'll bring tears to your eyes.

For the musically inclined, don't miss the Bob Dylan album of the same name released in 1969. There is a lot to love about this record, a duet with Johnny Cash, a great collection of Dylan's well written songs, and backing musicians known as the Nashville Cats.

i heart Owl City. it/he is the next best thing to a new Postal Service album, which will probably never come to fruition.
I opened my eyes last night and saw you in the low light
Walking down by the bay, on the shore, staring up at the planes that aren’t there anymore
I was feeling the night grow old and you were looking so cold

Enjoy this Album, my friends ..
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
cause theres too many places Ive got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldnt be the same.
cause Im as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I cant change.
Bye, bye, its been a sweet love.
Though this feeling I cant change.
But please dont take it badly,
cause lord knows Im to blame.
But, if I stayed here with you girl,
Things just couldnt be the same.
Cause Im as free as a bird now,
And this bird youll never change.
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I cant change.
Lord help me, I cant change.

Had to get one more Musically Challenged song in before the end of the week. Really dug the selections this week.
And I have to apologize, but this is a total post and run. I've gotta get changed and head out for soccer tonight. It was a long day at the office, believe it or not, and I had just enough time to get this shot done, scarf down a turkey sandwich while editing, and now post it before having to bolt. Everybody have a great Thursday evening.
Is it too soon to say TGIF? Maybe, but eff it, I'm saying it anyway.

It snowed today.
It’s pretty hilarious. Us Brits really can’t handle snow. Everything comes to a complete standstill and everyone starts to panic.
The only news story today is that there was some snow; apparently nothing else happened in the world today.

when i got my first dSLR, i headed straight down to Santa Monica Beach. not only is it one of my very favorite places but you'd be hard pressed not to find something worthy of a good image. a beach, a boardwalk, a Ferris Wheel, beneath the pier, loads of people and more.
you think i'd have grown tired of if by now, but you'd be wrong. i suppose i should choose another beach with a different pier. there are dozens of them scattered about Southern California. but i keep going back to Santa Monica.
aside from the obvious, i think it's in large part due to the nostalgia. i spent many, many days there as a child with my mom and brother, the games and such on the boardwalk that are decades old and remind me of faded photographs of Coney Island (though i'm well aware, on the whole, it's no Coney Island!), and the smell of cotton candy and saltwater: two of the best scents ever.
- for one of bebelabrees list of weekly songs in Musically Challenged.

"Boats and Birds," by Gregory and the Hawk
If you be my star I'll be your sky
You can hide underneath me and come out at night
When I turn jet black and you show off your light
I live to let you shine
I live to let you shine
when no one steps on my dreams, there'll be days like this
when people understand what I mean, there'll be days like this
when you ring out the changes of how everything is
well my momma told me there'll be days like this.
- Van Morrison, Days Like This
Woke up early this morning and got some errands done before a whopping allergy attack overtook me and I had to submit to a benadryl coma to kick it. Feeling better now but still super groggy from the drugs so I doubt I'll be doing much this evening. I hate feeling like a lump. Hope you guys are having a more productive and enjoyable Hump Day.
Inspired by Abi's Day 45.
Save your sermons for someone that's afraid to love.
You knew what I feel, then you couldn't be so sure.
I'll be right here lying in the hands of God.
If you feel angels in your hand, tear drops of joy runs down your face, you will rise.
Fillin' me up, now drain me
Skin begins to grow back slowly,
faster until I'm choking. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~Dave Matthews

I'm almost caught up...another double bubble weekend!
I cooked today - a chicken and lentil curry (for the freezer, I've got a busy week coming up!), butternut squash soup, an Irish stew, a banana cake, lemon nuts (like ginger nuts, hard lemony biscuits). I spent all day in the kitchen with half an eye on the snooker and half an ear on my Ipod.
I meant to do this back in September, but I only got round to it this week. Sorry about that, -=Tom=- , but better late than never ;-). Two years ago, I went to see The Arcade Fire at Alexandra Palace (where we used to broadcast the telly from in London) and gosh, it's an amazing venue, and I got drunk and the gig was incredible and the guy I was with - a seriously random date - told me off for being "over-zealous" and we never saw each other again and it took me two hours to get home and I'd do it again tomorrow.
I wanted to try the type of processing the impeccable Emily has tried recently: low contrasty and pinky and this was as good as it got. Sorry for a not particularly wonderful tribute, but a tribute nonetheless.
And I find it funny how something we do every day scores so low Scrabble wise. Gotta love Scrabble

Rebellion (Lies) by The Arcade Fire
Sleeping is giving in
No matter what the time is.
Sleeping is giving in,
So lift those heavy eyelids.
People say that you'll die
Faster than without water.
But we know it's just a lie,
Scare your son and scare your daughter.
People say that your dreams
Are the only things that save ya.
Come on baby in our dreams,
We can live our misbehaviour.
Everytime you close your eyes,
Lies, lies!
People try and hide the night
Underneath the covers.
People try and hide the light
Underneath the covers.
Come on hide your lovers
Underneath the covers.
Come on hide your lovers
Underneath the covers.
Hidin' from your brothers
Uderneath the covers,
Come on hide your lovers
Underneath the covers.
People say that you'll die
Faster than without water,
But we know it's just a lie,
Scare your son, scare your daughter
Now here's the sun, it's alright!
Now here's the moon, it's alright!
Now here's the sun, it's alright!
Now here's the moon, it's alright!
But everytime you close your eyes,
Lies!
The txalaparta is a unique music ensemble of stones, woods and pipes and two players who beat out a rhythm that is musically a tour de force of co ordination.
It is an old form of music much in vogue in the Basque region of Spain but has suffered terminal neglect and as a result not much of it is known to the people. The genre of music originated as a mode of communication in the hilly regions of the Basque foothills from one village to another to announce funerals, making of cider etc etc.
There has been a steady resurgence of the music form over the last 15-20 years.
Maika and Sara Gomez are twin sisters from the Basque region who are one of the leading proponents of the txalaparta. They go by the name of "Ttukunak".
They make a fine sight while they play the exotic music and the sound of course to use the cliched term is -"awesome"
You can see a slideshow of photographs on the band's website ttukunak.ning.com/

For Musically Challenged / mycuteladybug's week / Colors, by Amos Lee
"Cuz when you're gone,
all the colours fade.
When you're gone,
no new years day parade.
You're gone,
colours seem to fade."
And TOTW / Alter Ego
The silly romantic (I think I abandoned her in my teenage years, but who knows...)

Melissa Etheridge~Come to my window
I would dial the numbers
Just to listen to your breath
I would stand inside my hell
And hold the hand of death
You dont know how far Id go
To ease this precious ache
You dont know how much Id give
Or how much I can take
Just to reach you
Just to reach you
Just to reach you
Come to my window
Crawl inside, wait by the light
Of the moon
Come to my window
Ill be home soon
Keeping my eyes open
I cannot afford to sleep
Giving away promises
I know that I cant keep
Nothing fills the blackness
That has seeped into my chest
I need you in my blood
I am forsaking all the rest
Just to reach you
Just to reach you
Oh to reach you
Come to my window
Crawl inside, wait by the light
Of the moon
Come to my window
Ill be home soon
I dont care what they think
I dont care what they say
What do they know about this
Love anyway
Come to my window
Crawl inside, wait by the light
Of the moon
Come to my window
Ill be home soon
These magical songsters are busy in the garden at the moment throwing the fallen leaves around in the borders searching for meals. They certainly run my beloved Hawfinch close as a favourite British bird. And they certainly give my local Nightingales a run for their money musically when they arrive in a couple of months. How I love to hear that tapping noise in some shrouded corner as they find another snail, and break it up on an anvil, usually a stone, but often just a patio slab. The remains of past snacks devoured scattered all around. This from a few months back, when they were busy feeding another brood. Fortunately I had four lots of youngsters raised in the garden last year by two pairs, fingers crossed again, Lakenheath.
I was taking clarinet and guitar lessons. I offered free recitals to my friends. They loved my jazz interpretations of the great pop songs of the era.
(Brooklyn, 1967).
Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
So I took what's mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I've kissed your lips and held your head.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I am a dreamer but when I wake,
You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile.
I've watched you sleeping for a while.
I'd be the father of your child.
I'd spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We've had our doubts but now we're fine,
And I love you, I swear that's true.
I cannot live without you.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
And I still hold your hand in mine.
In mine when I'm asleep.
And I will bear my soul in time,
When I'm kneeling at your feet.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.
This was my first thought when I saw the "musically inspired" category for this year's speeder bike contest. Figured the anachronism would be funny. Quite happy with the final product IRL, less happy with how photogenic it wasn't.

Whose tufted flowers, on slender stalks,
Louis May Alcott
In a quiet, pleasant meadow,
Beneath a summer sky,
Where green old trees their branches waved,
And winds went singing by;
Where a little brook went rippling
So musically low,
And passing clouds cast shadows
On the waving grass below;
Where low, sweet notes of brooding birds
Stole out on the fragrant air,
And golden sunlight shone undimmed
On all most fresh and fair;--
There bloomed a lovely sisterhood
Of happy little flowers,
Together in this pleasant home,
Through quiet summer hours.
No rude hand came to gather them,
No chilling winds to blight;
Warm sunbeams smiled on them by day,
And soft dew's fell at night.
So here, along the brook-side,
Beneath the green old trees,
The flowers dwelt among their friends,
The sunbeams and the breeze.
Spring came again, and the flowers rose
From their quiet winter graves,
And gaily danced on their slender stems,
And sang with the rippling waves.
Softly the warm winds kissed their cheeks;
Brightly the sunbeams fell,
As, one by one, they came again
In their summer homes to dwell.
And little Clover bloomed once more,
Rosy, and sweet, and fair,
damn Flickr oversharpening...I'm too far into "lazy sunday" mode to bother tinkering with it.
I am having one of "those" days today. Taking forever to get started on anything, uninspired, and dragging along even though I have a whole pile of things to do today. I think it's because after two weeks of holidays, I'm not looking forward to going back to the daily routine.
Maybe I just need more coffee....

Beautiful, gifted and very artistic Celtic Harpist Sarah Marie Mullen will be playing live at the 2011 Arizona Renaissance Festival (ARF) weekends February 12 through April 3!
I played with the white balance in Canon Digital Photo Professional then tweaked smore more in Photoshop CS3 just for fun.
I took this photo with assist from Twig the Fairy who taught me how to do silhouettes.
Thank you Twig I am still learning so much from you
Musically speaking
musically speaking, of course.
to speak the language of music
is to speak a language that few know,
but most appreciate.
just speak.
whether with your own vocal box,
or a box of strings shaped so much like a silhouette.
it's the same lullaby to the ones you love,
and to those who want to know love.
musically speaking, of course…
musically speaking of course.
of course, of course, it's the music
quality of sound, but
what separates an audible sound
from an audible noise?
is it the same as what separates a grown man
from that of boys?
a mother enjoys her son with or without maturity.
ask the mother what separates men from boys,
and she will say of her children, “they're all the same”;
I love them all the same.
but for music, it's not it's not all the same;
it's not all the same.
the beauty of sound is very different from
the audible noise of a cacophony of aura.
the beauty of sound,
whether from an instrument of voice
or instrument of tin or wood…
Music…
the beauty of sound…
is only appreciated when it has the maturity
of texture and depth and feeling.
of course, of course, it's the music.
musically speaking of course.

Created for The Hypothetical Awards' 4th Annual, Musically-Themed challenge..."Album Cover Design!"
The stunning and critically acclaimed debut album by Amoricide, Overdosed and D.O.A. left many wondering if Jeff Scott Baines and the boys could live up to the hype with the release of their sophomore effort. The first single released, Raining On My Parade broke only the smallest of sales records, stalling at #19 on Billboard's Top100. In an odd turn of fate, a relatively unknown Canadian musician, Jazlyn Shaw recorded a version of Shouldn't You Marry Him...Dumb Ass! which went totally viral on You Tube, bringing attention to her, as well as Amoricide. Months later, with record sales skyrocketing, Amoricide launched a world-wide, ten month tour...with Jazlyn as their opener...does it get any better than that?

i loved taking the photo prior to this. actually grabbing inspiration from a specific song, singling out a lyric or two, and then creating an image to be paired with it.
this photo, though, was not intended for any song. this image is one of my favorite ones from Seattle. it's in Pike Place Market. this gorgeous, sloped, cobblestone street that leads down to an even more interesting alley.
so i selected a song amidst the ten to choose from per week and matched the song to the photo. not as gratifying, but i miss this little cobblestone street, dammit!
"The Sound of Silence", by Simon and Garfunkel
__________________________
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
Explored!
Yeah but all of these things
All these things
They're all truly nice but ain't nothing
Ain't nothing compared to the love that's running through your little blue veins
The color of your cheeks is of the blood rushing to them. :)
Today was fun, I finished the write up for the "familiarize yourself with flickr" powerpoint for James, I'm helping out in my photography class from last semester to get hours for service learning to graduate (hopefully) in Fall 2010 (YAY!) Can't wait. the electricity came back on! now my house is warm and my furkids are happy. I got to see Donnie for a bit after class today, it was nice since I havent seen him since Saturday, It's been a busy busy week. I still need to finish editing maggie and her family session, start planning the engagement session for this Saturday, and find some time to schedule two family sessions this month and a maternity session for Jamee. :) I'm so happy i love photography. Also! I'm looking forward to all my classes this semester. So far it's turning out pretty awesome.
