Groninger Museum was founded in 1894. The opening of its new building in 1994 caused a sensation and it has since established a reputation of being among the finest museums in the nation.

The radically modernist structures forming the Groninger Museum stand in a canal opposite a railway station consist of three main pavilions: a silver cylindrical building designed by Philippe Starck, a yellow tower by Alessandro Mendini, and a pale blue deconstructivist space by Coop Himmelb(l)au. A bridge that connects the museum to the train station is part of a cycling and walking path to the central city.

The architecture's futuristic and colourful style echos the Italian designs of the Memphis Group. Mendini, a former member of the firm who is noted for his furniture and industrial designs, was asked by museum director Frans Haks in 1987 to conceive the new museum. Haks wanted something extravagant and insisted on non-architects to create the conceptual studies. American artist Frank Stella was originally approached to design one of the pavilions, however, his plan turned-out to be too expensive because he wanted his structure completely built out of Teflon. The municipality then invited Coop Himmelb(l)au to replace him for the commission.

The Groninger Museum is built in the water of the Verbindings Canal in Groningen, a town in the northern Netherlands. The new Groninger Museum is not merely a casing for art, it is a work of art in itself. The ultimate design by the Italian Alessandro Mendini and the three guest architects Philippe Starck, Michele de Lucchi, and Coop Himmelb[l]au was completed in 1994.

The museum shows modern and contemporary art, fashion and design, as well as historic arts.

Isaac Brodsky was once considered one of the apologists of socialist realism: the portraits of Lenin, Stalin and other leaders of the party elite of the USSR made him famous. But for the exhibition in the United States, other, early works, devoid of political connotations, were deliberately selected. In total, the artist sent in eight of his works, one of which was acquired during a traveling exhibition in Birmingham, Alabama.

Et les soldats ayant tressé une couronne d'épines, la mirent sur sa tête, et le revêtirent d'un manteau de pourpre;

● Most likely it was this picture that the artist sent to New York for The Russian art exhibition in 1924.

●The painting was acquired from the Kustodiev family by the Russian physicist, Nobel laureate Pyotr Kapitsa in 1936 and until the auction was the property of the Kapitsa collection in Moscow.

●It's interesting that Boris Kustodiev created several versions of the painting 'The Coachman (Reckless driver)'. One well-known version, dated 1920, is in the Isaac Brodsky Apartment Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Berdyansk Art Museum has a watercolor 'Reckless driver' by Kustodiev with a similar plot, also dated 1920.

Rus:

The idea of holding the 1923 exhibition and sale of Russian art in America occured for quit mundane reasons. After the revolution, the civil war and policies of war communism, artists found themselves working in difficult conditions. Unable to rely on the authorities for help, they began a daring venture of their owl: they resolved to assemble the exhibition themselves, print a catalogue and find the buyers and clients lacking at home in foreign climes. The initiative group including Igor Grabar, Sergey Vinogradov, Konstantin Somov and others invited one hundred prominent Russian artists to take part. More than a thousand works were loaded on a ship and headed for the lights of Manhattan, a destination altogether new to the exhibition organizers.

Stygimoloch is a dome-headed dinosaur that was named in 1983. It has a small dome

on its head and clusters of large spikes along the back of its skull. New research

suggests that Stygimoloch might not be its own kind of dinosaur, but rather a young

Pachycephalosaurus (PACK-ee-seff-ah-low-SORE-us) whose dome would have grown

larger, while its spikes shrunk, as it got older.

People viewing "Paris Street; Rainy Day, 1877" by Gustave Caillebotte, one of the first major works of art you see when entering the museum (note a couple of Renoir's in the background).

I always think it's odd that people photograph paintings in a museum. Even if you're Ansel Adams reincarnated, what you photograph isn't going to be nearly as good as the catalog for sale in the gift shop (and besides, support your favorite art museum).

What I think is interesting is looking at people looking at art. And so, during a recent trip to the Art Institute of Chicago, I did just that and caught people looking at what are some of the most popular and/or my favorite pieces at this great American museum.

Hands in pocket, contemplating three of Claude Monet's stacks of wheat paintings (Mary and I did our honeymoon in Chicago 25 years ago, and the Art Institute had a show featuring all of Monet's paintings in this series; we have had a print of the one on the left hanging over our bed ever since.)

September 26–December 31, 2008

Culminating in 2008, a restoration of the Guggenheim's iconic Frank Lloyd Wright building’s newly restored façade was unveiled with a site-specific light projection by artist Jenny Holzer. Large-scale projected texts suffused the exterior with a play of light and changing language, transforming it into an environment for looking, discussing, and gathering.
